Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

If you've really had the itch to play Red Dead 2 to the point where you can't wait another month for the PC release, you've probably already bought it on consoles. Used Xbox Ones and PS4s can be had for $100 on eBay, if you don't already have one or the other or can't borrow a console for whatever reason.

What a silly agreement. If it's publicity they're after, they could get just as much and save some cash by making it Epic exclusive for a just a week. They'd get that tiny sliver of sales from idiots who could wait an entire year for it to leave consoles, but can't wait a little bit longer for PC, and I'm sure they'd save a pretty penny.

Well, good for Rockstar for taking free money from the idiot brigade.

I really want to play Untitled Goose Game, I just hate how I have to pirate it so I don't have to support Epic Games and download their piece of shit spyware application.

And no, I don't have a Switch, go fuck yourself.

only has exclusivity until december
the month people will be buying tons of shit anyway

rockstar fucking wins

during november more people will probably be buying through their launcher
then tons will buy on steam in december because christmas
And you have other new releases, coming at more or less the exact same time to doubly screw Epic over. Who gets an exclusivity deal for the exact point at which Death Stranding, Pokemon, Doom, and a Star Wars game are releasing? Why would they book that in an already crowded as fuck month?

Are you fucking kidding me? Tim is fucking re.tarded. This is the worst deal possible. 1 month? I GUARANTEE they paid over $70 million. Possibly even more. Control was 10 million for 1 year. That was a AA game. They're paying nearly a hundred million for a fucking month, when everyone is going to be saving for the Steam sales, they've got Death Stranding and a ton of other games.

Not to mention, THIS:

The Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Release Date Brings Rockstar Games Launcher Bonuses
Those of you who decide to purchase the game on the Rockstar Games Launcher instead of the Epic Games Store or Steam will get some special bonuses. A limited time offer will be taking place from when pre-purchases open at 11:00 AM Eastern on October 9, 2019, through October 22, 2019. You'll be able to get two of the following six games added to your Rockstar Games Launcher for free:

Grand Theft Auto III
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Bully: Scholarship Edition
L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition
Max Payne 3: The Complete Edition
Those of you who have already grabbed the launcher will note that San Andreas is nonetheless in this list.

Pre-purchases on the Rockstar Games Launcher will also grant you a free upgrade to the Premium Edition of the game. The Special and Ultimate Editions will also be discounted by $20 apiece.

Additional bonuses for purchases made via Rockstar's own launcher include:

Outlaw Survival Kit for Story Mode
War Horse for Story Mode
Treasure Map for Story Mode
Cash Bonus for Story Mode
50 Gold Bars for Red Dead Online

Holy fucking shit. This is the worst deal in the world. They literally did this only so it would be exclusive to their launcher for the pre-orders. Epic paid 8 figures for something with no benefits, for one month, while Rockstar's launcher is clearly the better deal.

Is Tim Sweeny on crack? Is he fucking autistic? Look at all the benefits you get from pre-ordering through Rockstar instead of Epic. Who in their right fucking mind would do this on Epic? I am utterly baffled by this decision. This literally makes no fucking sense. They wrote Rockstar a fat check, then Rockstar used its service to gobble up nearly all the revenue this is going to get (Pre-orders). Then it gets released in time for the Holiday Season on Steam.

There is 0% chance they ever make anything on this deal. It is simply not possible. Look what you get with pre-ordering from the launcher. You just get a pre-order from the Epic store. I know I'm ranting a bit here, but this just blows my fucking mind at how stupid the Epic store is.

No one is going to be pre-ordering this on anything but Rockstar. Anyone who does is going to do it. The rest will simply wait the month. Most people haven't played RDR2 for a long time anyway, so they can wait until Christmas or just pre-order it now. Or fuck, pre-order it on Steam and wait the month for it to unlock.

This is the worst deal Epic has made so far. It is hilarious at how fucking terrible it is. It is going to make nothing for this deal and handed Rockstar free money. Epic has no idea what it is doing and is just literally handing out money with no thought of any return. I have never seen a single business do this.

I hope they take Fortnite with them when they go belly up.

It is entirely possible.

But I am genuinely curious. How is this a good deal at all? I am struggling to wrap my head around this. Rockstar basically took a check and used it to advertise their own service with the most preorder benefits (which will attract all those who can't wait), with a release on the most popular platform or Christmas.

How does this make any logical sense? I don't get it.

Holy shit, I didn't know about those pre-order bonuses for the Rockstar launcher. I'm not even a big fan of the gta franchise that makes me want to get it. Who the hell is gonna go on Epic when they can go straight to Rockstar and get two free games on top of it?

I hope someone "accidentally" leaks the amount of money Epic paid for this, I need a good laugh

I have no idea. That's why this move is baffling. They literally didn't just get free advertising, they got paid for it.

This is what it looks like to me:

Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to PC as a one month Epic exclusive and will launch on Steam in December ON THE ROCKSTAR LAUNCHER WHERE YOU GET 2 FREE GAMES, IN GAME ITEMS, UPGRADED GAME VERSION AND MASSIVE DISCOUNTS TO EXPANDED VERSIONS.

I'd compare this to the Joker burning a giant mountain of money just for the fuck of it, but I think Tim somehow thinks this is a good idea, not a bizarre nihilistic whim.

I'm not convinced this isn't Tencent's effort to buy Fortnite from them during bankruptcy.
The problem with this theory would be their significant stake in Epic as a company. Tencent hardly does bad deals however, so something is definitely getting them significant revenue out of this, all while epic is getting less and less users on their launcher.

Forgive me for not knowing how to archive on my phone, but we sort of have confirmation that Valve’s 30% cut was 100% industry standard.
Yes, and no. Valve's cut is the industry standard now, but it was a very low and competitive deal when it came out. Cast your mind back to the wild world of 2007 or so. Going retail could get you less than 30% of the sale (because publisher negotiations) when Steam was getting its legs, solutions like Direct2Drive reportedly had 50% cut. GFWL was a more reasonable 40% (Though 25% if you agreed for exclusivity on Xbox Arcade). Impulse was the first web distribution platform that i know of that tried to compete with Steam toe-to-toe with the same cut.

Of course, that's just something that i can garner from people and personal experience. I don't, for instance know what Desura's cut was, nor do i know how GOG's cuts worked back when they were called "Good old games", but they were hardly directly competing with Steam then, and more competing with "5 old fantastic games" vs. "having a meal outside that week".

isn't the console cut the same, but comes with other bullshit-terms like platform parity or games needing to be 3d?
retail also was lower than 70% (don't think it was ever 30%, but physical production and transport came on top the licensing fee).

as for steam, the cut was never pure 30%. iirc there was atleast one indie dev who managed to negotiate a lower cut. besides that the additional services (you don't have to develop and pay for yourself ) and free key generation (which you can sell for whatever cut you want) come out of that too, not to mention eating the charges for different payment systems and regions.

that's why whenever anyone starts complaining about MUH 30 PERCENT like timmy or his journo buttbuddies you just know they are full of shit and are willfully ignorant.

Ooooo, I forgot they own that. I kind of forgot Epic making anything good.

that's relative. I had more trouble with unreal engine games (especially on consoles) than any other. does it even feature network interpolation on listen servers yet? which is great fun when the only offer is p2p - which unreal also doesn't offer out of the box.

lot of publishers also went back to using their own engines for the sake of control and money. I mean, just look at the epic store bullshit, it shines quite a new light on the troubles silicon knights had. would you wanna make your multi-million dollar investment hinge on the whims of someone like timmy tencent?

Sweeney is so majorly butthurt by that IGN article from Monday that he's whining about it on Twitter. Hey Tim, instead of wasting your Monday on Twitter you could be fixing your mess of a store instead.

I was playing Borderlands 3 (yeah yeah, my mistake. The game was a major disappointment and I gave money to these idiots from EPIC. but I digress) and I accidentally pressed F12 at some point to take a screenshot, just muscle memory in action. Guess what: this shitty client doesn't even have a shortcut to take a motherfucking screencap. It's absolutely impossible without using the windows overlay or the good old print screen (or any other fancy third party solution).

It's bizarre how Steam is so unbelievably ahead of them. The competition is seriously unfair. NOT EVEN A SCREENCAP HOTKEY!
