Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

Also i have to commend Microsoft for the 200IQ play. I'm sure they know people dislike Epic Store for various legitimate reasons, so they make Outer Worlds an Epic Exclusive for 60bux.

Then they release it for game pass which is currently 1¤/month. While game pass is a bit of a shit system where the games are locked behind so many layers of security it takes pretty decent puter knowledge to even get anywhere near the install folder... it's amazing marketing stunt from MS, and the game pass actually has other worthwhile titles too.
Is there a way to actually access them without going through the Xbox PC App? Because I consider myself fairly PC literate and haven’t found it myself.
I’d love to be able to move them to other drives and possibly even unlink them from the launcher, like I can with Steam. Fuck games expiring.

I really don't know of a single problem with Unreal Engine, it just seems to work well on every platform for any genre.
To be fair understanding how it's shit is a lot to do with relatively deep-end knowledge of game development, but in general everything that isn't the editor is handled awfully. Memory management is close to nonexistent, leading "large" scale (>3gb) memory usage games to take ages to close, it's scripting is limited to C++ (don't even get me started with using C++ for scripting or its "blueprint" system), it has severe issues with internal database corruption which can occasionally just fuck up an entire day of development as it needs to be rebuilt (to be fair, this was also an issue in earlier Unity v4 and late v3), despite it being used flexibly, it is extremely inflexible, and it's built from ground up to make single player limited-scope shooters. You're even more familiar with the issues if you've ever played Ark. It's an absolute fucking miracle that game runs as well as it does on Unreal engine, and despite goobers whining that it's "poorly optimized", the Ark devs have worked absolute fucking magic around the numerous shortcomings of the engine.

That being said, there are reasons why it's popular, even though aging and clumsy now, its editor was an industry standard for extremely easy and quick to use to concept features and even complete conceptual games, and they've done fantastic editors since the very first Unreal Tournament hit the shelves. It remains popular to this day because Unreal Engine singlehandedly showed everyone what a proper development kit should look like. Anyone who has been banging their heads against the wall with the likes of Hammer editor have no idea what incredible features and tools they were missing from UnrealEd.

It's a shame they have decided to go at such a shit route.

Yes, Windows Store, but the interface and moving them to another drive is just as shit as the xbox app, and the xbox app is dedicated to the game pass with... usable(just about) user interface compared to the Windows Store UI. That's the most significant downside that there is. You can launch them through Steam by running an argument on explorer.exe (that's not a joke) because that's how they're actually launched, but it's really not worth the effort if you ask me, since they don't actually support the overlay.

Apart from that, they're locked behind significant security behind something that you can't even hope to get under without root access, and i can hardly recommend that.
This seems to be the best method to get them on other drives succesfully. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...p/04aeae3d-7a64-44c0-b615-7ae0a9540cd4?page=1

They really need to work on that shitty xbox app, because it's really the only issue keeping me back from recommending the damn thing everywhere.

So, I know there's been little news about Epic but I just wanted to laugh at them some.

Halo: The Masterchief Collection just got released today. It has over 140k active players, putting it third, next to CSGO and DotA 2. It is number one on Twitch, beating out all other categories.

This game has eliminated all of Epic's paid for exclusives in one day. In one day, it has earned Steam more money than any exclusive Epic has. Also another reminder, Halo: The Masterchief collection is NOT available on Epic. Don't fuck people, you autistic faggot. Good on you, you got Outer Worlds. I hope it was worth it pissing Microsoft off so much they not only abandoned exclusivity, but didn't even bother releasing Halo to your store.

Yeah, Epic Games Store is the future of gaming. Surely no other publisher is looking at this and then looking at you and then their launcher. Right. Good luck securing those AAA exclusives boys. I hope you've got the checkbook ready.

But they have Super Meat Boy 2! An unnecessary and unappealing sequel that will sell a bajillion copies, right?

It’s not meat boy 2 it’s meat boy forever. Because forever is a much bigger number than 2.
Hm. To me, "TITLE forever" that wasn't preceded by numbered sequels sounds like a re-release of the original game with all the DLC included. Even if I were interested in Meat Boy at all, I'd ignore it.

I know Sweeney has plans to procure more exclusives, but hopefully any devs worth their salt knows that the backlash and the death of whatever goodwill they will generate is not worth the dosh.

Odd, I thought Epic said they were planning to stop with the exclusives. It’s almost like they were taking out their ass.

At the same time, guess what game came out literally on the same day on Epic? Phoenix Point, the game that was crowdfunded then went Epic exclusive. And the result on Twitch?

It's fucking dead. I was watching a streamer play it yesterday, but not for long, and when I went to watch him today, he was playing XCOM 2, and as people asked why he wasn't playing Phoenix Point, he said the game was bland, felt soulless, and was just plain shit.

Why do so many sequels have the naming convention of ‘forever’, ‘eternal’ and ‘infinite’?

No implication you might need to have played the previous installments.

What a good use of 2.5 million to 5 million dollars. I am sure in the 10 years it takes to profit off of that, Steam will surely feel it.

Odd, I thought Epic said they were planning to stop with the exclusives. It’s almost like they were taking out their ass.

I mean, he can cut all the checks he wants, but with a singular title, Valve has eaten all of those so-called losses and probably profited more on top. We estimated it was going to take him, what, 10 years to make his money back from Control? God knows how much he paid for in Borderlands 3 and RDR2.

The only thing I see happening for exclusives is publishers and developers demanding more cash. A singular release on Steam basically kicked Epic's teeth in. They lost the MC collection because they bought Outer Worlds. In no universe that is a good trade. Nor will they be able to win back Microsoft with the cash they're taking in.

I mean, the Halo Collection only proves that Steam needs one big title to counter Epic's gobbling of smaller games.

We all knew this was a completely asinine and ineffective strategy. But the glaring fact that one game has devastated their exclusivity strategy makes it even more glaring.

Now Epic faces a massive problem. People are going to be demanding bigger checks, ESPECIALLY triple A studios. Epic's exclusivity deals were never sustainable. It was a bull rush strategy that could only work as a blitz. Now it's a trench war, which means pouring endless amounts of money just to keep even with Steam.

The way Epic foresaw this (or Sweeny more specifically) was that the two digital fronts get into an exclusivity war, Steam panics and Sweeny 'negotiates' an Armistice for his shitty cut so he can compete.

Valve basically said, "We've got enough games and anime tiddy games. You can have some. We know you don't like the tiddy, that's ok. We keeping the tiddy." And Epic did not have an answer to that.

People were saying "Why isn't Valve doing anything?!" Its because they, long before any of us, had their accountants and money people crunch the numbers on the profit:loss ratio of Epic's exclusives and basically found it was the equivalent of the J. Jonah Jameson laugh meme from Spiderman. They didn't HAVE to do anything. All they had to do was wait. And that's what they did.

Not even original content can save Epic as EA is moving back to Steam. If EA can't do it, Epic can't.

It hasn't had a shopping cart since its inception, one of the easiest ways to encourage multiple purchases. What the fuck did they think was going to happen?

The price drops they predicted never happened. The gaming press actually said games should cost more. Shocking they went with their corporate overlords, I know. So what choice does Epic have other than to continue this shit strategy?

You're Valve. Your new "competitor," which isn't even a competitor in any real sense of the word, takes a giant pile of money and burns it while taunting you, threatening to keep doing it over and over again. You remember that shit about not interrupting your enemy while he's making a mistake and watch and laugh.

Valve could do literally nothing for a century and still be rich. It sucks that they're barely making new games, but as far as a store goes they're pretty good at that.

Exactly both. Valve has perfected the market for over a decade and basically built a roadmap to a successful store. The problem is the massive money commitment. The second you open a digital store you need to be on par or equal with at least GoG, which is even a daunting task. Realistically, you'd get as close to Valve as possible. Ideally you'd follow what Valve did and find avenues of expansion, which at this point in time are very limited. Valve has plumbed the depths of digital Distribution and even dabbled into hardware and OS. Even though it struggles in these two, the new VR set is still a number one seller. The announcement of a new Half Life game basically exploded the internet as Valve is making a game again.

You've got nothing like that with Epic. They relied on a rush, blitz strategy that needed to work fast. Valve is the opposite. Sloth like, slow to react, quick to plan but cautious. Valve has lived through the digital distro wars of the early 2000s and the start of the decade. It knows well. And Valve didn't take Epics idiotic bait and Epic just had no plan to counter this.
