Infected Euphoric atheists

Maybe this is a regional thing that's taken far more seriously in some places than others, but where I live (upper midwest) religious people are usually pretty laid back about stuff like this and wouldn't take it as an insult if you refuse to participate in blessing a meal, as long as you're not making farting sounds with your armpit or something while they're doing it.
The thing was he was rather vocal about refusing that, I heard of him raising shit about it when asked to say graces when a simple "No" and silence while they're doing it would suffice.

Yeah, that's probably a bit uncalled for, unless they were really pushing the issue. A "no, thank you" would suffice in most situations. Though to be fair, asking a stranger (or a person whose religious beliefs you're not sure of) to actively participate in a religious ceremony, no matter how minor, seems kind of presumptuous.

OK, I really wanna know why a certain sub-sect of atheists seem to need this kind of stuff. By 'this kind of stuff', I mean the videos, the online circle-jerking and ass-patting, the endless discussions that all arrive at the same foregone conclusion, the echo chamber mentality, the aggressive trolling of harmless religious people, etc. Being an atheist is the easiest thing in the world - you don't need years of seminary or hours spent in meditation to grok 'no god'. And one of the biggest perks of being an atheist is that you get to opt out of all that churchy joiner bullshit, no one comes around to make you sing kum-ba-ya or implore you to attend certain places on your day off. People like this fuck up the fun.

I think you just answered your own question. It's a form of identity that provides a sense of belonging and community, in the same way that joining a church or the seminary does.

What's funny is that while mocking the "weak-minded sheep" who believe in religion, they're flocking together in exactly the same way.

(Meaning specifically the atheists who gather together after making not believing in a god the centerpiece of their identity.)

Excuse my ignorance...why "euphoric" atheists and what does the "euphoric" have to do with fedora tippers? I see that all over neckbeard stuff and don't understand :(

Anyone who has to flock together with a big unacceptable and intolerant group is going to be a real cunt. I'm atheist, aka "without god," and I suppose one could say it somewhat defines my life since my values are based on my personal experiences and morals I have learned through my own development and logic rather than that of a potentially totes bogus, dated book.

Despite this, I have many religious friends and am open minded about stuff.

But yah, the radical atheists are almost as bad as any other form of radical (well, for lolcow standards...far as I know no radical atheists have ever murdered someone because they were religious, but the opposite has been done a billion times)

He looks like a fatter Jin. And thanks, finally. Man what a dbag though. Being atheist doesn't automatically make you smart, and being religious doesn't make you dumb.

Just means you have different views of the world and different levels of questioning what's around you and said to you.

To me what's most ludicrous about these kinds of people to me is that the actual philosophical stance of an atheist should be a simple lack of faith, not virulent opposition to it. This lack of faith only needs to be qualified with the term atheism due to the immense cultural impact religion, the abrahamic ones in particular, have had on society.

In my mind an atheist should simply regard religious claims the same way they regard every other claim, that is with scepticism unless provided evidence they should change that stance. But instead they've made it into this political movement and wear it like badge of honor proving how far above the great unwashed one is.

What they should really call themselves is radical secularists or something like that, it's a far more fitting label since secularism can at least be considered a set of political ideas unlike atheism which SHOULD be a fairly simple philosophical stance. There's also no reason atheism or secularism for that matter should be incompatible with religious tolerance yet these fedoralords act like religious persecution is simply the logical continuation of those ideas.

Considering how easy it is to get a rise out of the internet-dwelling subset of this group some of them are bound to be prime candidates for lolcow status. I think TheAmazingAtheist and the whole Thunderf00t/VenomFangX drama have pretty conclusively proven this.

There are plenty of religious people who are secularists, though, at least in its modern use in the political context as supporting separation of church and state.

God I was there in /r/atheism when this happened. Basically this post was the pinnacle of all the jerking that the circlejerk atheist community /r/magicskyfairy actually posted that they had been beaten and DELETED ITSELF. /r/atheism was redone where shit like this was unacceptable and dropped it out of the reddit defaults. Yes they all rebelled to the 'no macro images' rule and made their own subreddits, they're still apparently active and you can find them posting like this STILL.
Some people never change.

Oh god I remember when I would have rolled with this crowd, I used to watch all the militant atheist shite and lap it up because where I live religion is...well kind of a quiet expectation, no one talks about it but everyone expects you to be in some form of religion and were pretty hostile when you say you aren't. Abandoned ship around the point that the whole Thunderf00t vs PZ Meyers and later on everybody thing happened. Still watch C0ctopuss prime now and then for shits n giggles.
Anyway this kinda circle jerking really doesn't surprise me, hell if I'd been more vocal back in the day I'd be right there with the Kleenex and laminated fedora. The feeling is like some quasi enlightenment alright, you feel like you truly understand the nature of the world and that everyone else is living in blind ignorance. You feel like you can see the beauty of randomness while everyone else sees a make believe God etc. The defining point I think is whether you grow out of it and realise you're acting like a bigger dick than most of the fundies you wanna fight against or whether you turn into these douches and just strike out at everyone harder.

Sure, my point is that atheism isn't really a fitting term for what the /r/Atheism crowd are doing since it's not really a political stance and the term secularism could potentially be applied to political opposition to religion in general, at least more so than atheism could. Perhaps not the best suggestion for a new name, I'm just salty they've sullied the perfectly fine term with their bullshit.

I remember going through my athiest phase. thankfully it was shortlived and became agnostic.

Athough I was an Athiest, I hated the people who dismissed the bible as just "some dumb book" and that humanity will one day will stop believeing in religion altogether.
The latter got me especially mad because these people don't realize that humanity will always worship something, be it god, the goverment or their pop science idols.
