My favorite one is always the Abraham one because people clearly just don't get it.

Isaac was Abraham's second and legitimate son, there was no one in the world he loved more than the fact he had a son to continue on his legacy. God had kept his promise with Abraham and everything looked good for Abraham. Now, in the Abrahamic times, people sacrificed their firstborn all the time, so it was something that wasn't very uncommon. God told Abraham to go up and sacrifice his son as a test on multiple parts. First, he wanted to prove that Abraham was willing to trust him and second he wanted to show that he was different from other gods.

When Abraham reached the mountain (supposedly the temple mount) where he was going to sacrifice Isaac. He did not hesitate, so he validated to God that he was willing to follow him to the ends of the earth. God stopped Abraham from finishing and instead gave him a ram to use for a sacrifice.

Now atheists love to stop there because no context makes them sound superior, but there are a few things left out of this story when it is brought up.

First, by his unwavering faith, Abraham was given the blessing of being the father of many nations. Almost every nation in between Iraq and Egypt has claims of descending from him. Both of his sons went on to be the patriarchs of very powerful nations.

And the second was God abhorred human sacrifice, in fact, it is just about the worst thing someone can do. In the Bible, God hated the other gods, but there was one he hated above the rest by a long shot; Molech, the bull headed god that encouraged child sacrifice. Abraham's time had multiple variations of Molech, so he had seen it before. God used this to show that he would never encourage human sacrifice. In fact, in Hebrew law, a murderer could sit on the altar and be untouched, because killing him would be considered a sacrifice (the moment he got off he was fair game though). Molech was truly hated by God and he made sure to show it. When Josiah drove out the other religions from Jerusalem, the only holy place he defiled was Gehenna. Gehenna was the field that former king Ahaz had used to sacrifice his sons to Molech. Josiah instructed all citizens of Jerusalem to make Gehenna the new city garbage dump. And thus the same fires that burned children days before became the fires that now simply burned their trash. Some people think that the burning trash heaps are where we get the "fire and brimstone" interpretation of hell from.

It's hard to understand the bible even with context, and these guys are doing themselves no favors (even if it is on purpose).

Also, notice how the two first posters are from the US and the euphoric is from the UK. I don't want to sound prejudiced (but then again its the UK so I don't really give a fuck), but I've noticed that people from the UK tend to be far more bitter and resentful of religion than their US counterparts, at least if online comments are any indication. I guess it's probably because religion is so subdued in the UK compared to the US, but holy shit, Brits can get really salty over God.

If online comments were a way to define what a country as a whole thought, then the US would be full of autistic manchildren, paedophiles and a mixture of far right and far left lunatics.

In all seriousness though, we Brits have a... difficult relationship with the almighty. Until recently, we had the serious religious violence in Northern Ireland where lots of people were killed. I'll not bore you with a history of the religious reformation in Britain, but in the sixteenth century we officially changed religion three separate times. And with the rise of Islamic extremism in Britain, hatred of organised religion is on the rise once more.

However, I think you're forgetting something. Autism transcends national barriers my friend, and that, sadly, is why that athiest poster was being such a cunt.

I used to think the exact same thing with the first video about putting the Bible in the fiction section. I have in the past openly said that a few times. Now Im more of a you leave me alone Ill leave you alone type of guy when it comes to religion.

I dont even care about Nativity scenes on public property anymore. The way I see it its a small price to pay for Christians and Fox News to shut the fuck up about the supposed "War on Christmas" Shit I actually celebrate Christmas because its fun to give and receive things.

Ive come to the conclusion that a hardcore political atheist is just as bad as a hardcore political Christian. The statement made by American Atheists about the 9/11 cross came of as terribly insensitive and claims about how it cause pain and suffering were ludicrous. Fuck Off. These people dont speak for me.

That's what I can't wrap my head around. Even if you're not a Christian or a Jew or even a secular celebrator of Christmas, this time of year is beloved for being a season of giving, togetherness with your loved ones, compassion, and warmth. Christmastime just puts tons of people in a great mood. Why would you want to spoil it? Why are you being so mean and grouchy about Christmas? Even though I'm Catholic and Christmas is supposed to be a Christian holiday, I really do love seeing how it's celebrated by the general public and how much people cherish it (I can do without all the rampant consumerism, though). I love all of the Christmas cliches, from Santa Claus and reindeer to Christmas trees and cookies. I just don't understand how people can't find something to enjoy, even if they don't want to celebrate a religious holiday (which I totally get, some people aren't comfortable with that stuff). I mean, you can still celebrate being with your loved ones, right?

Is this the article you read? This a little off topic, but hopefully it will inject some positivity into this thread, haha. Yes, Mary is universally beloved and admired by Catholics. We are told to emulate her because of her humbleness before God and her deeply loving and compassionate nature; she is believed to protect and intercede on behalf of sinners, as she understands and feels compassion towards them. She is especially venerated in places where she was said to appear; when she would appear before people, she would bring a message of peace, love, and hope. She's still venerated in places like Guadalupe, Fatima, and Lourdes as an enduring symbol of hope and love. I think it's all very beautiful.

That's the one! :) I'm Catholic too, and I always saw Mary as a role model--mostly, truth be told, because of her sheer strength. The flight into Egypt was only the beginning, cripes ...

(And okay, some puckish part of me is deeply amused, imagining the thought process of the mortal woman who had to discipline the son of God when he tracked mud into the house. That takes some guts. Four little words, "They have no wine," really sum her up. As my own mother likes to translate it: "Sweetie, you're the one who showed up to the party with twelve extra guys. Listen to your mother and go miracle up some wine. Now.")

Speaking of amusement, that meme with the crying child made me snort. That seems to be another trait of the deeply euphoric: the twin convictions that religion is a) nothing but all-Hell, all the time, and b) making all its adherents miserable. Religion is like the Dark Side of the Force: the only power derived through it must be negative, and fueled by hatred and suffering. I suppose that explains the dark cassocks and organ music, anyway ...

I would just like to take this time to reiterate just how much I fucking love it when they try to turn themselves into memes. It's equal parts hilarious and cringe-worthy.

Case in point: Japan celebrates Christmas, and barely anyone is Christian over there.

Have fun.
What if I chose to be not atheist with a rational mind? I think there's a subtle assumption by them that if you're rational-minded, you'll always pick atheism.

I also see that apparent conflation of religion with narrowly defined Christianity or Islam again.

Back when I was 15 I thought the Bible would be in the fiction section and thus looked under G (God) but couldn't find it so I thought that my school district banned religion

I used to put Dianetics in the science fiction section, but it's deliberately miscategorized and put into the psychology section.

Bibles and the like are usually in a section called "religion" or "religion and spirituality" depending on the bookstore. This section is for religion, I think, and is where Bibles belong.

Seems like Christians aren't the only ones to approve ignorance and 'insest'.

Seriously, if you're going to stamp some retarded shit on your ugly mug and upload it to facebook in an attempt to look superior, at least spellcheck that shit.

From what I have gathered, the most euphoric atheists are the ones who are the weakest in their faith (yes, it is faith that there is nothing our there.) and like some Jesus freaks who want to shut out all opposition, they want to do the same.

They usually throw around the philosophy of Richard "I wish I was Hitchens" Dawkins and use these memes because they want to justify themselves within the culture. Just like the evangelicals they fight, they try incredibly hard to convert people to their cause, and it does about as much good as the fire and brimstone guys on my college campus. And just like Christians, they actually need to challenge their beliefs to mature. Those that do USUALLY stop being the euphoric type, though there are some exceptions.

Most of the euphoric crowd however is incredibly weak on arguments and fails to understand context and religion, they usually push people away from atheism (With how good of a job he has done, I'm like 10% convinced the amazing atheist is a fundamentalist because he does a great job of scaring off potential atheists) and usually rely on false fallacies in order to "prove" God doesn't exist. I have had almost no schooling on religion and I'm convinced I could religiously take on almost every euphoric in a moderated debate.

Heck, look up Dawkins' track record. When the pope of edgy atheism isn't competing against Ken Hamm types, he gets owned on a pretty regular basis. At least when Hitchens lost he could chalk it up to him being absurdly drunk.

Actually, Dawkins refuses to debate against Christian Creationists, under the excuse that they're "lying imbeciles" or something, when really it's because he historically tends to lose against them too. Not even joking.

Considering how they use science, I would like to mention that science also gave us the likes of the atomic bomb and various chemical weapons. While they can say those are weapons, the atomic bomb and various chem weapons rely on science. These "Science gives x, religion gives y" sort of things kinda ignore some of the bad shit science has.

Wasn't it a priest who developed the Big Bang Theory? You know, the one these atheists are so fond of using in their arguments?

The science vs religion dichotomy is ultimately a fallacy.

There's nothing about evolution, or physics, or chemistry, that directly invalidates God or even TRIES to.

Science is about understanding the "rules" the universe works by, and can be proven to work by, not determining who or what set those rules.

It's a weak argument that you either have to choose God or Science. In fact, thinking that is dogmatic (how ironic) and ignorant of all the great scientists who managed to figure out the periodic table, or Newtonian model physics, or relativity, while still being religious.

"Open your mind and be smart!" well, they were, and routine testing proves they were also RIGHT, not because of OR in spite of, going to church.

The backbone of both evolution and genetics were both created by religious men, one of which was a monk and the other who had the potential to be one.

But again, these idiots are why you can happily say atheism is a belief that requires faith, 'cause they sure as hell act like a religion with this proselytizing and idolizing certain members of their community.

There was one article I read (and wish I could find again!) by a Jewish rabbi who had a really interesting theological perspective as to the nature of the universe.

His argument was that when God creates an angel to perform a service for Him, that service can be anything. It doesn't have to be announcing the birth of Christ to a bunch of shepherds, or nuking Sodom and Gomorrah. It can be gravity, or photosynthesis, or language. Or anything that makes the universe behave in the way it does.

@RedneckQuadFeed , you never fail to deliver in this thread. I think I cut myself on all that edge.

I found a Christmas-related article that occurred in Lincoln, Nebraska. Atheists muscled in on a Nativity scene and erected a happy humanist statue & a "reason tree." wow

Funny how I never see these idiots going after Hanukkah and/or Ramadan.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...manists-nativity-lincoln-christmas?CMP=twt_gu

Of course, there is plenty of fedora-tipping in the comments.

It would be nice if every house in Lincoln put a nativity scene in their front yard.

...........
You know what wars are absurd, too? Wars over nationalism, greed, and resources. Number one cause of war, my ass.
