Especially when the holy book of Christianity literally says Christ can't change with the times.Realistically trying to shape Christianity to Current Year is a fool's errand no matter who is doing it.
I saw someone say somewhere else on KF that Mormonism is so weird because it's a product of its time.I shit on all religious groups... but especially Mormons. More than anyone else the Mormons deserve to be bullied for believing in magical underwear.
The reason there's so much emphasis on ancient Egypt in Mormonism is because Egyptology was both new and exciting enough to be interesting and was in the public eye at the time, a bit like how lots of the New Age cults that sprung up in the 60's are based around UFO's.
Many of the things Mormons do come from Freemasonry, which sounds weird now because the average Mason only really joins a social club with a couple of odd rituals (the weird stuff, if you believe it exists, isn't stuff Steve who goes to the Masonic lodge in order to "network" knows about), but at the time Freemasonry was definitely something lots of people feared and were curious about (there was even an anti-Masonic political party around that time) and so Joseph Smith, a Freemason, would have borrowed some of its rituals in order to get people to join his cult.
Some of the other things in Mormonism come from the fact that it was founded and spread on the frontier; it seems odd for Mormons today to keep a year's worth of supplies at their house, wear magic underwear or avoid drinking hot drinks or alcohol, and it seems odd for Mormonism to ban blacks from membership until recently and make psuedohistory about Native Americans dogma, but keeping loads of supplies with you, wearing long johns, which is basically what Mormon magic underwear is, and not getting drunk are all pretty sensible things to do on the frontier. There's also the fact that the early Mormons would probably have been racist and that probably filtered into their doctrine over time.
