Is 'Imagine' the atheist theme song?

Nice and subtle -- the best way to do it.

By that logic, they'd have to reject the Big Bang theory, because Georges Lemaitre was a Catholic priest.

And evolution, because genetics was invented by Gregor Mendel, an Augustinian monk.

And a large chunk of astronomy, because it was pioneered by Muslims, and the observations of Galileo, who remained a Catholic even after the Church was a dick to him.

Basically a huge chunk of famous scientists were also religious.

About the pray for Paris thing, I hate to be that guy but, the hashtag does kind of send the message that if you care, you'll pray, and that does kind of ignore the non religious. I'm not against the hashtag because it is well meaning, but that is something to point out. (Braces self for dislikes)

Darwin still believed in god while writing The Origin of Species, too. iirc he never went full atheist, just agnostic.
And the theory of gravity, and Newton's laws of motion, because he believed in God, too.
Also alchemy and hidden biblical mathematical clues to predict doomsday.

Of course, fanatical creationists generally portray him as a slavering atheist who ate Christian babies and invented evolution solely to destroy religion.

(It's a lot more difficult to portray a friar that way even though his foundational work was necessary for evolution to make sense. Without inherited traits, it doesn't work.)

Wow, these memers are definitely approaching Dante of Edgy May Cry levels...

Also, this cracked me up:

Descartes is still revered as one of the most influential philosophers and mathematicians today. He was also a man of science and is considered to be one of the greatest geniuses of the 17th century. Even if you don't know who Descartes is, almost everyone is familiar with the phrase/concept "I think, therefore I am" ("cogito ergo sum"), which Descartes coined.

But of course he was wrong and all of his contributions to human knowledge because he was stupid enough to believe God exists.
The images do hit the DMC level of edge. It's one thing to point out flaws in a religious belief and all but the images almost feel like they really just want you to think all religion is bad, no exceptions and excuses. As for Descartes, if one must disregard him for believing in a diety, then maybe we should disregard all other contributors to sciences and philosophies for believing in something not everyone believes in.

Considering pray for Paris thing, one can say it can be something insensitive at least in a sense that one wouldn't be doing much, be it in a religious stance of praying or secular stance of being in your thoughts. Then again, some would say it could help if one truly does have compassion. Either way, one should at least have the right to have some sort of sympathy or compassion to what happened in Paris, regardless of beliefs.

The amusing thing about this is that many proponents of homeopathy (or healing amulets or any other kind of magical cures) often use this very argument: "My cure works and thus it is valid!" -- and they'll come up with a huge amount of anecdotal evidence: "I had stomach cramps and after I took arnica globuli they went away! And then my budgie got nervous but I gave him seaweed drops and he calmed down! So homeopathy obviously does work in practice and is therefore a valid branch of medicine!"
Without specifying what exactly you mean by "working", the maxim "my worldview works" is largely meaningless. A scientist would probably define "X works" as: X has been tested a statistically significant amount of times by several independent researchers and the results can right away be replicated by any laboratory worldwide. Most modern theologians wouldn't have qualms with that, because they see religion as a part of human experience not accessible by experiment. (There are some religious people who disagree with this position though, maybe most interestingly the physicist Frank Tipler.)

There's some stupid atheist copypasta going around on FB. (I would have taken screenshots but the only people I've seen use it in/for their status are my legitimate friends, so something something powerlevel.)

In any case, here's the copypasta in its spergy glory:
"My name is _______________ and I am openly secular. I am kind, moral, and good, not because I need the fear of divine punishment or the promise of a divine reward, but because it is the right thing to do. I am good without a God! If you are not ashamed put your name in place of mine and make it your status. #facebookheathenchallenge
The repost is in the comments to copy and paste."

The world would be such a better place if we only fought over who has the best imaginary friend. Instead we mostly fight over things like
  • Non-religious ideologies (just throwing out a reminder that communism was atheistic)
  • Resources
  • Politics
  • Territory
  • Race/ethnicity
  • Long-standing feuds
  • Economics
  • Nationalism
  • Basic human emotions like greed, ambition, and pride
  • And so on
Even so-called "religious" wars often had many different factors to them; the Crusades were about land, the Troubles in Northern Ireland were way less about Catholicism vs Protestantism and more about two separate factions wanting Northern Ireland to remain part of the UK or become independent, and most of the conflicts in the Middle East are driven by history and economics; religion is just a light frosting on the top.

tl;dr- Tip your fedora some more, the aliens on Kepler-452b aren't impressed.

Hilariously, someone posted John 10:8 which says:

I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

What a well-researched costume!

Apart from this jpg having very bad quality -- it almost seems like it's meant to make an anti-atheist point: I mean, it's not exactly commendable to hunt someone with a different opinion out of a forum or to go into a forum were you don't share the majority opinion and then get into arguments with everyone.

But it's still from an atheist site

He's trying to say that he can kung-fu religion to death with his awesome words. The truth is he'd act like a raging tard and get smacked in the brain with his own medicine since theists also include honest to Odin smart people. Who learn. And leave the house. In real people clothes.
