I think most self-described humanists are just using the label because it sounds nice.

But most of their values were obviously inherited from Christianity. Equality, pacifism, altruism to a self-destructive degree--these weren't popular ideas prior to Christianity. Pretty "coincidental" how all these logical, rational atheists subscribe to the same liberal values that had no place in the pre-Christian world.

In some ways you're right, I believe they borrowed parts of the Humanism ideology from the Catholic Church but I'm not an expert on the history. Though a core tenant of Humanism is blind faith in science and technology leading to a utopia, and it seems to intertwine pretty heavily with progressivism and the 'egalitarian' philosophies of Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill.

Pope Francis made a statement (namely that people should stop killing in the name of God) and you know what that means! Time for Reddit to bitch about religion while simultaneously shitting themselves and doing nothing! Sort by controversial for the best results.

This one comment in particular cracked me up for being blatantly wrong; someone actually calls him out on it and he just doubles down.

Philip and Axelrod’s three-volume Encyclopedia of Wars chronicles some 1,763 wars that have been waged over the course of human history. Of those wars, the authors categorize 123 as being religious in nature.

That’s 6.98% of all wars. And when we subtract those waged in the name of Islam (66), the percentage is cut by more than half to 3.23%.

The vast majority of war and mass killing comes down to three things: money, land, and power.

A ton of fedora tippers truly seem to believe that religion is the primary cause of war and conflict; just look at the comments on this article claiming the opposite. I don't understand how they could think that when the biggest, most catastrophic wars in history (WWI and WWII, Mongol conquests, most of the major civil wars, Napoleonic Wars, Taiping Rebellion, etc) were all over things like political tensions, resources, etc.

I had some guy in one of my classes in High School say that "All wars were started because of religion!"

All I could say to that is "Huh, didn't know the Vietnam war was because of religion. Nice to know."

That shut him up. I think he was repeating what Seth MacFarlane said (who is a huge Euphoric)

Plus it's arguable that even wars such as the Crusades were primarily about money, and and power, and that there are few truly 'religious' wars at all.

In fact I hear left-wing atheists contradict themselves on this, such as saying that 9/11 is proof of the harm that 'religion' causes, while at the same time saying that "Muslims don't have us for our freedom, they just hate us because we mess around with their countries".

Didn't Mao kill more people than all of the Crusades combined?

Yes, but to be fair, that was more due to his fucking disastrous ideas and planning rather than any ideological reason. For example, Mao instigated the Four Pests Campaign during the Great Leap Forward. The goal was to eradicate four pests in China that Mao Zedong considered to be an enemy of the people. These four pests were: the mosquito which spread malaria, the rat which spread the plague, the fly which spread other diseases, and the sparrow which ate the grain of the peasants.

However, the only "pest" that was actually eradicated was the sparrow. Thanks to the propaganda machine, people got caught up in the cult of communist worship and were able to kill millions of birds in a short amount of time. Unfortunately, by killing all the sparrows, they eliminated the primary predator of the locust. Without any natural predators, the locust population thrived. Grain production in most rural areas collapsed and a massive famine began. The resulting massive famine in China killed, by some estimates, 20 million people in total. The government quickly rushed in to cover up their massive mistake and replaced the sparrow with bedbugs as a threat. It took till 1978 for scholarly works to be done that were able to assess the catastrophic loss of life due to the government’s program.

Off-topic, but it does demonstrate that non-religious people can be just as destructive as religious ones. Ignorance knows no ideology.

Indeed, that's why it's amusing to see people who think it's a given that following science leads to a utopia. Science is a set of practices, a method of thinking... a tool, if you will. It gets put to the use of whoever wants to use it, for whatever purpose they wish. Science is just as likely to create a bioweapon as it is to cure cancer.

The only control we've ever had over the process is to appeal to the decency and ethics of the scientist. This involves discussions of morality which, quite honestly, is a very difficult concept to approach using only scientific means.

Science can build a utopia, but first you need the humanities to decide what that utopia is going to look like.

I agree 100%. Hell, this actually applies to how a lot of euphorics are also STEMlords who believe that the arts and humanities are useless. Like, even some popular scientists (such as Bill Nye and Neil Degrasse Tyson) have publicly stated that they think fields like philosophy and the social sciences are a waste of time.

I just don't understand that mentality. Science and awesome and all, but what about things like art and music, or fields that go into things like morality and ethics? Science can't offer what those things offer.

As an example, just look up eugenics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a set of scientific beliefs that was used to justify hundreds of discriminatory practices across the Western world, including forced sterilization and euthanasia. It took the Holocaust to finally get rid of widespread eugenics beliefs. Hell, scientists can't even agree if coffee and eggs are bad for you.

Did they not see how Equilibrium turned out?

Seriously though, you'd think a bunch of nerds would understand what being judged based on what you find joy in feels like, and I guarantee you that they have some nerdy non-STEM hobby that they engage in, even if it's just listening to music.

Ugh, these comments.

Fedora tippers without taste.

When I first saw this, I thought it was mocking the typical fedora-tipper view on religion. Then I realized they were serious. :neckbeard:

I remember the set up for that gag being McFarlane's mouthpiece Brian getting pissy and saying something like "Before religion, there were no wars." Maybe not that exactly, but something along those lines.

Then there's this:

islam and atheism are way suoerior to deluded Christians lol.

if religion didn't exist millions of lives would have been spared from history. Imma just leave this here

All organized religion is crap ! right on Family Guy !

2016 - people still believe in god?

How often does McFarlane sperg about religion? I remember that one episode where he basically said that the world would be a utopia without Christianity. Either way, we could start gathering material for a thread of his own!

So, what I'm taking away from all this is that STEMlords are stupid because they think the humanities are worthless, which includes history, which is why they've never heard of resource wars?

No, it's STEMlords pissed that they don't have the brand recognition of Christianity whining about how much it sucks.

Right, because it's not like we could still have wars over things like resources and the idea of the aggressor being a superior or master race/nation. While religion itself can be a cause for war, it's not the biggest reason. Not when you have people fighting over resources, differences in ideas, and other such reasons. But euphorics do want to say it's only religion that causes all wars.

Often enough that it could make him different from others that mock religion. The one episode where he said the world would be a utopia without Christianity was one episode that took place in the multiverse which could kinda be excused because it's the multiverse (that means you have utopias that exist because of Christianity). McFarlane could be worthy of a thread but that means he had to of sperged of things other than just religion (there is Trump but that would be for the Trump victory salt thread).
