I'm a godless heathen myself but most of these euphoric types completely misunderstand why things like lust and gluttony are considered sins. They aren't sins because "hurr durr Christians are joyless prudes" they're sins because if you're such a fucking degenerate trash fire of a human being that you can't stop doing drugs, stuffing your face, or hopping on cocks for five seconds why would you deserve eternal salvation? That's the point.

Sam Harris is a great example of this. He's adamant that it's possible to create a system of morals and ethics based only on science and reason. It's a commendable idea, to be sure... but he doesn't acknowledge that the secular world has tried this multiple times and the results have always been disastrous.

Any such system would still have to be based on non-quantifiable fundamental assumptions related to what ultimate good the system proposed to advance. Even a utilitarian system that proposes to maximize the amount of pleasure or the degree to which preferences are met assumes a priori that these are actually "good" and advancing them is "good."

You can't actually prove these assumptions from facts or knowledge.

They'll misunderstand them likely because their only experiences of Christians towards things like sex are from those that think sex must be terrible. I'm going on a limb from learning about lust and gluttony being a sin in that gluttony means you're just a greedy fat fuck that eats more than they actually need, especially when others are starving. As for lust, sex varies among cultures but then again, I'm sure other cultures that aren't Christian also draw a line over sex and who you do it to.

The communists had their own mysticism and anti-science beliefs.

You don't need religion if you raise people right and have a culture that emphasizes being a decent person, self pride, and a respect freedom.

Atheists mainly have a bad rap because Americans value god very highly but also because people that actually go around identifying as Atheists are usually retarded.

There is literally nothing to build an identity upon with Atheism. A fetish gives you more to talk about.
This is why so many Atheists basically stopped identifying as Atheists after 2012'ish. They either ended up identifying Sjws, skeptics(??) or Nazis. The identity is nothing and all thats left to embrace it is braindead people, NPCs and degenerates that just want some excuse.

Japan's pretty secular.
Yes, but their value system borrows from lots of philosophical traditions, such as Shino, Confucianism, and Bhuddism. It's not the "science and reason only" framework that euphorics claim would be ideal.

This, but really they just hate Christianity a lot which is why they idolize Japan because there aren't that many Christians in there.

Not super euphoric, but still interesting. Your takes on this?

Depends on the Atheist, but honestly the biggest reason it's hard to convert one is due to apathy on the Atheist's part in my opinion. At least that was one of a couple of big reasons I went down that road since I just couldn't see the magic if you will. The other two were :powerlevel: related.

Outside of Confucianism even calling them "philosophical traditions" is more secular than the reality. While westerners love to paint modern Shinto, Buddhism, and bizarrely even Taoism as "philosophies" the reality remains is that the vast majority of scholars consider them religions. Shinto and contemporary Taoist practice are almost universally theistic. Buddhism is (often) non-theistic, but almost never atheistic.

A few days ago, Stephen Colbert had an interview with Neil Degrasse Tyson. Stephen Colbert is a practicing Roman Catholic and Degrasse Tyson questioned him on his faith. The interview itself actually isn't bad, but I found this article on an atheist site where the comments are... oh, boy.

(this site is a great way to find content for this thread btw)

Imagine being this triggered over someone being religious :story:
I used to lurk Patheos purely for the creeps that fester there. Pure exceptionalism and smug douchery all around. A few years ago the atheist section had quite a few furries and otherkins who, while atheistic and never ceased to mock religion, had crazier beliefs of their own. Just look at this shit.

But its okay because he no longer believes in this shit "spiritually", only "psychologically" because he thinks that sounds less delusional... It still boggles my mind that people like this exist. Patheos is a goldmine of pretentious lolcows just waiting to be picked. I'd also like to say that everyone on Patheos is exceptional regardless of their stand in life, but it seems the atheist section has leaked into every other corner of the site.

Also here's some more recent material.

MY favorites are the ones who claim that religious liberals are the hypocrites, because by not taking the Bible literally, they want to have their cake and eat it too. Never mind that Biblical literalism is generally a recent practice (late 19th century), and a minority one at that. Or that the vast majority of Christians or really, any religious people aren't major Fred Phelps types, ISIS members.

If you're not a fanatic, to them you're not a TRUE religious person. You're a huge hypocrite. I love that.

There are droves of those around art sites and tumblr, which is sad, cause "I believe in elves, but not God" is a stance so dumb, it can't be expoused by anyone even mildly logical.

How does that Michael Cramer guy live? I know most militant Atheists tend to imply that they would leave well enough alone to most theists but this guy is literally putting the sand in the line with everyone. I can't imagine this guy not having that many friends if he's going by that logic.

The difference between Christianity and Islam is that you wouldn't have been alive to make this picture.
