There is another match: His age. June 30, 1988 is his date of birth, (got it from YandereWiki) the article was published in December, 2012. YandereDev was 24 when this happened, the perpetrator was also 24 when that happened. This means, the name AND the age in this article fits.

We might get more clues about the identity if we look up his IP and compare it to the place where the crime took place. If it's the same state, it is another bingo.

From my research, there are two Alex Mahans that are 28 years old in california. Alex 1.(Our Alex) and Alexander Mahan, who lives in Hayward, CA. Santa Rosa is a 2 hour drive from Hayward, so it makes more sense for Alex(2) to be our culprit. But who knows? I'm pretty sure Yandere-dev didn't do it, but, its evaxephon we're talking about.

Edit: Its 8 hours between evaxephon's town and santa rosa.

I actually don't really know how it's handled in the US, but where I'm from it's kinda common to use similar, but false names in the news. Even without saying so, in order to protect the suspects to some degree. Maybe he has multiple middle names?

I'm still not entirely convinced that the guy just happens to have the same name with the exception of the middle name. I mean, c'mon... a woman attacked? The same first name, the same family name? The age?! The same state? Too many coincidences.

Maybe there is some other article on that attack, which could help us more.

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but I think I've found some fairly conclusive evidence against this being him.

After some basic free directory searches, I started to doubt this theory. On Spokeo.com, it lists two different 28 year old Alex Mahans in California. This is an odd coincidence, but it's definitely not impossible. One's address is right down the street from the stabbing, and the other's (Eva's) addresses are given in two other areas of the state. None of the known relatives for either match up.

That seemed fairly suggestive in and of itself, but I also did a basic search for "Evaxephon" on Google, around that time frame. If he had committed the crime (on Dec. 29, 2012), then he would have been held in jail for some period of time, and would definitely not have left any comments online. However, within five days of the stabbing (on Jan. 2, 2013), he left a comment on a $15 busty Unity character:
