Not just that, but they were blindly trusted without anyone even bothering to do any critical thinking whatsoever. And I'll confess I am a part of that problem, I was on myspace in my youth and have a Facebook and a twatter that I signed up before I recognized what they really are.
Once I realized that social media is just a self complete dossier on you that the companies sell to government and advertisers I turned my shit as vanilla as could be imagined and now just use it for professional connections. But I'm still on the grid because I too blindly trusted in technology I didn't understand at the time it was evolving.
For a lot of people it's much worse though because through malevolence or ignorance they still place full trust in the Gates and the Zucks and the Dorsey's of the world to be benevolent wise masters of technology. It dumbfounds me sometimes how many people will talk about sensitive medical shit through Facebook messaging under the illusion of "well it's not like I'm posting it in public".
I think it will get a lot worse before it gets better. Society has become too fat and comfortable. We may even be past the point of correcting our own course and thus require some outside natural selection pressure to force our fight or die instincts to kick in. Any who survive would quickly be able to reconstruct society in a better image because even without the infrastructure or population itself the knowledge would still persist.

It's a little too convenient that the movies and TV show it as a constant thing in American high schools, when it's pretty obvious that various "experts" (i.e. successful nerds) have run the show since World War 2. Is this their version of milking the Holocaust for pity points?

I can think of one that isn't a direct result of this, over-reliance on numerical metrics. It's like our world is full of rampaging paperclip maximizers, except rather than robots it's NGOs filled with tunnel-visioned experts, each trying to optimise the world for the metric which their field is focused on increasing. You've got the greenies, who want everyone to become bus-riding vegetarians because it reduces CO2 emissions, the Coof zealots who want to shut down all of human society until there are 0 cases left, the Federal Reserve economists who, in a quest to maximise GDP growth every year, turned our economy into such a convoluted madhouse that most people think it's all a big scam &c., &c. . This started before the hippies too, the Vietnam-era generals were so focused on maximising body count that they ended up both losing the war and destroying public morale with bullshit like the My Lai massacre.
