Evolve is one of those games that seems to be getting overly-hyped. After getting injured by the hype-train more than once, I tend to be cautious about where I spend my hard end cash, but this game's gameplay got me interested.

Each game is a match between four hunters and one monster. The monsters goal is to murder the hunters and destroy a power supply. The hunters' goal is to kill the monster. Hunters have four classes they can play as, each class has two character options that play slightly different, but fulfil the same role.

For example, in the role of trapper you can play as either Maggie or Griffin. Griffin can lay down sound traps that activate when the monster walks past them, while Maggie has a cute doggy-monster called Daisy (Daisy sniffs out the monster).

Now, while the hunter classes sound like they could be really fun, the biggest draw for me was the fact that you can play as the big bad monster. You have to hunt, eat and survive until you can grow strong enough to take down the hunters. Only 2 (Goliath and Cthulhu-err, sorry, Kraken) of the supposed 4 monsters have been revealed, here's a video of a guy playing as the Goliath:

The game looks like it could be fun, but I'm weary of hype-trains. If you "XCOM: Enemy Unknown" on Steam, you can play the Evolve alpha. So, has anyone here played it? : ( I didn't get XCOM so I'm out of luck.

Huh, I just realised I have that in my games library (I have XCOM on Steam). I'll install it and give it a go, though it may take a while.

Gave it a try and I'm impressed with it so far. The game is absurdly good-looking for an alpha and I'm interested to see what else they do with it beyond the current play mode. The main problem I have with it so far is that I can already see some balance issues for it with some hunter subclasses being much better than the other one available.
