An explosive device was found on Monday in a mailbox at a home of George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist who is a favorite target of right-wing groups, in a suburb north of New York City, the authorities said.

A law enforcement official confirmed that the device was found near Mr. Soros’s home. It did not explode on its own, and bomb squad technicians “proactively detonated” it, the official said.

Federal and state law enforcement officials responded to the scene in Katonah, N.Y., a hamlet in the upscale town of Bedford in northern Westchester County, after the Bedford Police Department received a call about a suspicious package at about 3:45 p.m.

“An employee of the residence opened the package, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device,” the police said in a statement. “The employee placed the package in a wooded area and called the Bedford police.”

His activism has made him a villain to conservative groups and the target of anti-Semitic smears. Roseanne Barr called him a Nazi in an infamous tweetstorm, and just this month, Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, falsely speculated that Mr. Soros had funded a caravan of migrants moving north toward Mexico. There is no evidence that Mr. Soros paid thousands of migrants to storm the border. Nor is there evidence that Democrats support the effort, as President Trump has said.

Mr. Soros became a major political donor in the United States during George W. Bush’s presidency. He spent millions backing John Kerry’s unsuccessful bid to deny Mr. Bush a second term, was an early backer of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and contributed more than $25 million to Hillary Clinton and other Democratic candidates and causes during the 2016 election cycle.

Though Mr. Soros’s name has become a trigger for a subset of Republicans and conservatives, he has said that his main goal as a political activist was to see a return to bipartisanship.

He has said it was the extremism of the Republican Party that had prompted him to become a major Democratic donor, but also said he is opposed to the extreme left.

“I don’t particularly want to be a Democrat,” he said.

Bedford is about 50 miles north of Manhattan and has been home to many well-to-do city transplants, including Martha Stewart, Glenn Close and Ralph Lauren. Katonah, where Mr. Soros has a home, is known for its cultural offerings, including the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts and the Katonah Museum of Art.

The town is known for its insularity and lack of gossip, which allows for well-known residents to fly under the radar. “They look to Bedford as to being protective of their privacy,” John Stockbridge, Bedford’s historian, said in a phone interview.

Mr. Stockbridge said that the town has largely avoided drama or violent scares. “I’ve been here for 35 years and I don’t remember any incident like what you’re talking about,” he said.

You do know he was made a "kapo" as, like, a 14-year old, right? And that most kapos didn't have a choice (beyond "be killed now or later") or lived in particularly better conditions than other prisoners.
Oh, so did he work covertly with anybody or group to help the victims of the nazis? Or did he just reap the rewards?

He made his choice.

Yes: he "chose" (at 14 mind you, an age where one's moral reason is barely developed) not to be summarily executed and have the next person down on the list be given the option. I'm not saying he's a goddamn saint; I'm saying he's a human being who made an incredibly tough decision to stay alive and try to make things easier on his fellow victims rather than have a Schutzstaffel thug reign over them directly. As for his "rewards", they boil down to "you will be killed last"; it wasn't like he was chumming around with the SS, drinking champagne and washing himself with Jew fat soap or whatever image you have in your head of him.
I know you need Soros to be a literal baby-eating monster, but life isn't black and white. Soros was put in a position that most adults at the time found nightmarish as a boy, and although he was no angel, I think it's deranged to act like he's Dirlewanger squared for what he had to do.

Soros doesn't need to eat babies to be a monster. He's enough of a monster as is.

The image I have in my head is you with yours up your ass.

I don't see the issue here: Soros himself is just saying "I did fucked up shit as a kid as a result of these circumstances, but it never really sunk into me that it was wrong". He can clearly tell it's wrong now. I've read similar stories from, say, people who collaborated with the Commissariat during Soviet occupation, or who were conscripted into the Khmer Rouge. It's very easy to sit here and say "he was evil because he didn't oppose the Nazis tooth and nail and doesn't burst into blubbering tears when talking about this 60+ years later!", but as they say, war is hell, and he did what he had to to survive. Also, in that interview, he wasn't even a kapo: he was being protected by one of those people who worked covertly to help at least one victim of the Nazis (namely, himself), and that part of his disguise required him to assist in the confiscation of the property of condemned Jews.

So was he a kapo in the camps or did he lie about his religion to stay out of the camps?
Both, as well as a member of the Hitler Youth and Hitler's more evil clone.

You have to wonder at the dichotomy of technical know-how required to build a mail bomb with the seeming stupidity of thinking important people like politicians or billionaires handle their own mail. It's like they imagined Soros picking it up in slippers and a bathrobe (while being at the correct house).

It's like the guys who try to mail ricin to congressmen. They really think the mailman would just lug an A-bomb right up the steps of the Pentagon in a wheelbarrow as long as there are enough stamps on it for proper postage, and nobody will ever consider screening the mail of important people for such....

Dean Harvey Hicks assembled a truck bomb with the relative same explosvie force of Tim McVeigh's OKC bomb, and then parked it in front of the IRS building in Los Angeles in 1990, the reason it didn't go off? He was an electirical engineer who got so wrapped up in his "baby" that he built into it an overly-complicated detonator that, as a precursor to setting off the main ammonium nitrate charge, would launch tiny mortars full of rocks and shrapnel at the building to create noise and make everyone run outside to meet the blast.... a device so complex, it failed to work. (and Hicks ended up going to jail for life, effectively, all because he wanted to crater the IRS for denying him an $8,000 deduction)

Meanwhile, The Erie "Pizza Bomber", Brian Wells, got his head blown off by a bomb made from a kitchen egg timer.

Engineers are often too smart for their own good.

Is that why all the "successful" bombers are hicks and mountain men

That's a question practically worthy of a thread, but the short form:

George Soros is a ridiculously wealthy advocate of open borders and globalism. He's well known for pouring money into various progressive causes and front groups (I believe MoveOn was one of his earliest).

Interestingly, he's persona non grata in a number of European countries, and I believe the Brits would like to have a word with him about his currency speculation (which is believed to have caused them a LOT of economic heartburn a while back). He's confessed to being a 'kapo' (a concentration camp trustee) in his youth as well.

So yeah, he's almost like a Dr. Evil impersonator, except with a lot more money.
Why does his home country (Hungary) hate him with a seething passion?

This is probably linked, so I'm posting it here. Another bomb package was found at the Clinton's New York home:

I'm going to laugh my ass off (and be totally unsurprised) if the bomber turns out to be someone who has a history of spouting pizzagate conspiracies and follows the Q-Anon shit.

According to this article there was a package sent to Obama also, but it was intercepted before it got to his home.

The only times that old Jew goes to his mailbox is when "charity" money is delivered in letters. He jumps and kicks his heels together.
