F-Zero GX

Easily my favorite Gamecube game, and I was no good at it. I always sweatypalmed the last lap on Lightning Loop and lost all my lives there (I made it to the last track exactly once, with one life left, and promptly died), and I never could make it past level 2 or 3 of Story Mode because I never really figured out the drifting.

One of my favorite games on the Gamecube and always bummed that I never played the arcade machine.

I can't unlock all the content normally and one of these days should download the 100% file. I could pay a $60 for a HD master with all the content available.

I was always under the impression it was a kind of rare machine. I only saw it in the wild once, and was unable to play it at the time. I went back a couple weeks later (with my memory card) and it was gone.

There was literally only one location I ever found it, and I'm still amazed it stayed there until I moved away. Proprietor told me it got regular use, so I must not have been the only fan.
If you care at all, the entire AX cabinet game is actually buried in the gamecube disc, so you can fully play it on Dolphin or with Action Replay. All you're missing out on is the custom looking controller from the cabinet, which is apparently just a normal steering wheel with some molding to make it look unique. I gave up on arcade cabinets because, while maybe I have bad luck, the ones I get to play are all physically beat to shit and turning doesn't work so they are unplayable. All of the other shit you could unlock by bringing your memory card (custom machine parts) to the arcade is also just a matter of Action Replay codes.

It wasn't just the control stick that made it unique. The whole seat swiveled when your craft banked, which is why it had a seatbelt ( and if the belt didn't work, you'd have to figure out some way to press yourself in the seat, which may be why some cabinets don't work).

As much as the X soundtrack is a classic, GX’s soundtrack just feels more futuristic for me. Gets my adrenaline going. I find it funny how the best performing GameCube Nintendo game is made by Sega.

I was extremely lucky to actually be able to bring my memory card to one of the AX machines.

For anyone in this area, There's a Pizzeria Arcade in Seaside, Oregon that still has an AX machine. I used to go there bi yearly and they've had it almost every time I went there (only one year I couldn't find it and it was because it was out for repairs.)

I remember that location. That was always the best game in that arcade. Though last time I was there (which was also just a few months before I left the Northwest), I don't recall seeing it, as most of the machines had been replaced with modern ones.

It would be a shame if they got rid of it.
