Facebook changes its name to Meta in major rebrand

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus VR which was bought out by Facebook over half a decade ago (and which he was quickly kicked out of after for political disagreement) chimes in.

I agree this is almost absolutely going to just be an attempt to combine everything and get rid of the original names of various services.
The metaverse will kill the company. Cuckerberg is gonna go all in on exceptional individual 3d immersion infrastructure and no ones going to use it. It's going to be 2nd life but worse, dumber and more expensive.
If that happens cuckerberg will finally be outsted from the company. Anything goes as long as the shareholders don't suffer the consoquences.

I think they're trying to move away from the Facebook brand because it doesn't make sense, they're a tech company with multiple products.

It's for sure not going to pan out. It's such a huge step backwards. Facebook is clearly reaching the state of a stagnant tech giant, reminds me of 90s AOL. Theyre clearly run by out of touch rich people and cuckerberg doesn't have anyone to reign in his bad ideas. Jobs at least always had the Woz.

Facebook got big because a young guy tapped a vein and it all just made sense, not to mention the overheads were lower. Anyone with a brain can tell you no one that grew up on mobile devices taking the internet everywhere is going to want a full on VR headset. The investment this idiot idea will require is gigantic, not to mention the end user will need to shell out for the headset.

Zuckerberg is never being ousted from Facebook. He owns the majority of Class B shares which have 10x the voting rights of Class A shares.

I couldn't even tell what the fuck was going on in that announcement video like, do they seriously think zoomers are going to drool over this?

Yeah, the key would be to nudge Facebook users towards it, but not force them to it. Without Facebook's captive userbase, whatever Zuck has in mind is DOA. However, if he forces them towards it, there's a good chance that he also kills off Facebook as well.

TBH, for all the harm Facebook has done to this society (Twitter moreso), it can be comfy at times- if you curate your groups and friends well. There are some absolutely adorable and knowledgeable enthusiast and hobby communities there, and it would be a bit of a shame if they were lost alongside the rest of Facebook.

zuck forced oculus users going back to the first devkits to get facebook accounts for their shitty marketplace, after they claimed it wouldn't happen. they won't learn from that. they will do it again.

Do them a simple solid, suggest alternatives to fallback to. On the other hand, they've had years to consider alternative avenues, even if they aren't that much better outside of simply not being Facebook.

This is probably going to end up like some Second Life type crap and Facebook will shit out it's financial bowels in the process.
shit like second life ended up dying off anyway, do they really think vr/ar is good enough yet to warrant that but the vrchat version of it? Doesn't VRchat basically do none of this and they're still successful?

I still remember when FB was a relatively obscure site only college students could sign up on.
And your page was your "wall" where your friends could mspaint graffiti (usually dicks)

The best part was when they introduced tagging you could tag anyone as anything. There was no stopping you from tagging your friend in a picture of a schlong or a dog's butthole.

You get what you deserve lucky, you could have been huge but sold out to the worst company you possibly could have, not valve not a gaming company not even a tech company fucking Facebook of all companies.

No more pc vr that people gave you money to actually start up VR in the first place, your brand name wiped and no more upgrades to the current hardware as Facebook wants to "maximise thier data user base." And if VR is nothing but more than Zucc's data farm and dies you'll be known as the guy that didn't start vr but killed it.
