So woke that I end up coming out of it feeling the woke one. Racism was and probably still is bipartisan.
Civil War Republicans -> Often opposed slavery because they wanted America to be a white country. The west was to be white mans land and black people were to go back to Africa.
Late 19th/20th century Progressives/Liberals -> Eugenics + White Lily movement sees the rise of laws effectively making whole states whites only. Conservative racism about a traditional order where black people at least had a place. Progressive racism was often borderline genocidal/apartheid. Its why "sundown towns" only really existed in the north. Conservative southern racists wanted their black people to be at least able to work in their society. Progressive places wanted them gone. The progressive anti-Imperialist league opposed annexing the Philippines on "whites-only" grounds. and planned parenthood was to reduce the number of unwanted people (Sanger outright says mmigrants and minorities). Woodrow Wilson was the most influential progressive of his time and he used the Lost Cause myth to unite the country with racism creating the "Red and Black Scare".
New Deal Democrats -> The programs were designed to uplift the white working class. Its why black people have such segregated communities even in the North. They had much less access to subsidized housing (when it was actually really good), credit, and were sometimes just outright banned from living in places.
Late 20th century Democrats/Progressives -> Literally championed neoliberalism. Jimmy Carter was the first real neoliberal. Kinda fucked up but it was Nixon who was the last New Dealer and his New Deal programs were probably the least racist, although his personal recordings suggest he kinda hated them and only viewed them as a source of votes... interesting coincidence that black people get public housing and it suddenly gets crap funding and Stalinist apartment designs... perhaps they were racist?
