Facepunch/Knockout Forums - A "welcoming" gaming and lifestyle community

I was on Facepunch back in 2008 and now it's over, don't know why they want it to keep going it's just going to get worse.
I like to lurk the site occasionally and watch them become more and more mentally ill and find the users who are just gonna drop off the site instead of giving retards the time of the day.
Site is kind of a resetera but more depressing and grim.
Screencap below is on a thread about the banning of deepfakes in Britain and Wales, it's funny to click on the thread and just find them having a meltdown and eating eachother over the word female.

That is absolutely mental. So glad I got permabanned. Imagine that place being your only place to talk politics and news and being groomed into that line of thinking.

Thank you knockout for banning me, leading me to the amazing kiwifarms. Couldn't have broke the spell without your efforts.

a mod telling someone with sense that they should have bent the knee and apologised for something trivial & innocuous. Classic.

I mean you can't really 'talk' about politics, you can just mindlessly nod your head at whatever the tranny mob tells you to think or be banned. You literally are not allowed to disagree with whatever they say, making it pointless to even bother having dicussions. Might as well just post the article, then a little section under it telling you what to think of the article and not bother with the forum aspect, since discussion is straight up not allowed.

Mr. X just deleted his account lol. I remember seeing avatars of that anime character for a long time, even back on FP. Funny to watch them castigate oldfags in the name of semantics. I swear to God, any thread that has Emperor Scorpious or any of the tranny mods, especially WishesForFishes just degenerates into an argument about semantics and niceties rather than anything of substance.

After binging this thread, I have to say Knockout really seems like a metaphor for the valuable lesson of moving on from online communities once their expiration date happens.

No online community lasts forever. SomethingAwful used to be an unstoppable giant and the center of culture in the web's heyday. Facepunch used to be a great resource for Source game modding and general game discussion. There are plenty of other forums and online communities I can't think of right now that were big back then but are either defunct or shells of their former selves today.

I was not an active participant of Facepunch when it was still huge, but I have been in a lot of online forums and hangouts that I thought would last forever, but eventually just withered away. Website operators move on with their lives and users eventually go on to do other things and participate in other circles. This isn't a bad thing, but rather just the state of flux that online communities (see how many times I say that in this post) go through and how your interest change as you grow up.

From an outsider's perspective, Knockout is diehard FP holdouts trying to grasp on to the fading memory of the forum they loved as kids/teens/young adults/whatever--but you have to learn to just let it go. Trying to prop it up artificially with your new forum started out of spite will give you nothing more than a hollow imitation of what you used to love while you pretend that it never left in the first place. Not for a lack of trying, though, since they seem to really like flaming their actually excellent contributors until they delete their accounts because they simply cannot take the stupidity anymore, leaving only the circlejerkers and people you would never want to share a forum with.

And what's their endgame, anyhow? When/if they run out of regular people to permaban for daring to go against the grain, they'll probably start turning on each other in a bid to out-clique each other. Do they think this is the kind of culture that a new user wants to participate in? That people want to get accused of LITARLLY TREEING 2 MUDRUR trans users for calling them out for being thin-skinned overly sensitive retards?

What an exhausting life the average KO user must lead. I hope they find peace and love in their real lives.

Better late than never I suppose.

The value of these spaces is in the people you're with, and not all people are of the same value. Even back then, I would notice that there were users who were interesting, but they were often rather detached from the forum, and then there were people trying to insert themselves everywhere. They naturally gravitated toward the news section, since news serves as a universal online content generator. So KO is like a revolution where instead of King Garry banning people for stupid questions about Gmod, the lowest tier of users from the news section (horny people with mental disorders and a mommy complex) got in charge.

I guess this is just reality, yep. FP used to be a great place, KO cannot possibly become FP again if it tried, just because in so many ways Twitter and Discord became a natural substitute for what quality people would do on FP. Having said that, KO is an excellent zoo full of peculiar animals that we can observe from a safe distance.

You would have a point IF facepunch had died a natural death of "everyone just moved on". The way it died was a shock. It was alive and well, and that bled over into KO. KO WAS alive and well initially after fp closed down. Nobody really moved on, they were all banned or forced to shut up. FP used to ban people like Amber for being rude AF, no matter what point they were making. KO's moderation shifted so that people like Amber could get away with it because muh activism. They chose ideology over neutrality.

What gets me the most is that it never had to be this way. They could STILL be kicking ass like facepunch was. But they made every decision to instead compete with resetera.

I think there's an issue with reddit having eaten all the other communities, meaning people are really starved for choice now. I can't honestly think of any other big forums other than KF these days, everything else is just reddit, twitter and I guess 4chan

And Discord. Personally I can't blame casual internet users for the switch; it's far easier to click two buttons and create a Discord server than it is to set up a vBulletin or XenForo instance.

And yet their forums are dieing. So much delusion lol.

Yeah it's almost like new users don't want to be on a discussion board where they are essentially told "we will call you a nazi/fascist/transphobe if you attempt to have any viewpoint that does not align with our own, no matter how milquetoast."

I get that some assholes use free speech as a cover to be assholes but your website will not survive if being in disagreement is somehow equal to associating yourself with the biggest war criminals of the 20th century.

Knockout condemns Elon and the Marketplace of ideas.
Their idea seems to be the equivalent of just closing the door on the fire going on in the other room and assuming that because they can't see it it's not there. You'd think they've have learned that just pretending the opposition isn't there doesn't mean they've gone considering how wacky shit has gotten over the last year.
I honestly think censorship is genuinely bad and makes things worse due to it meaning neither side has to confront the other sides ideas so they just get more and more nuts in their little circlejerk spaces. If your ideas can't stand up to the other sides criticism it means they're probably shit.
