It's because homos of every letter in the alphabet have been heavily whitewashed (in the "they can do no wrong" sense, not the race-baiting one) and marketed as a poor oppressed minority for decades and that sort of thing triggers the same emotional response as something like a stray cat in a lot of women. The pet angle is even more pronounced when women get obsessed with faggots because there's a subconscious connection to owning a weak domesticated neutered male animal that needs to be protected from the more threatening ones that would kill it in the wild. So really it's a combination of pity mixed with undertones of disdain in just the right measure to cross their wires into a misplaced maternal instinct for "harmless" lesser creatures.

I can't speak from personal experience, but my mom used to be friends with this gay guy who was diagnosed schizophrenic. He would do weird shit like bring his pet rat to the office he worked at and talking about how he had x-ray vision and could see people's internal organs.
