As the title says, anyone know how to get a fake cellphone number for online uses? i no longer own an actual cellphone (Canada cell phones plans fucking sucks) since a landline is cheaper and money is tight but i need to setup a new paypal account for online purchases and it requires a cellphone number to even sign up. I dont own any CC as well making other form of online purchases a pita.

Hoping the more tech savvy kiwis can help.

You can try the sites that let you receive sms, but many places have blocked their numbers. I would be surprised if Paypal hasn't. Just search for "receive sms verification codes" and you'll find a bunch of them. They get a range of cell numbers much like VPNs get with IPs, so they're relatively easy to block. The other is a prepaid plan as mentioned. If you still have an old phone you may be able to get on for as little as $10 minutes/data card and $1 for a sim card. You best bet if finding a Maplefriend who uses prepaid cellphones and getting the details from them.

Most "free sms" services get blocked by companies that use sms for customer verification. There are paid services that work better, but since you don't have a credit card or paypal, it's kind of a chicken and egg problem.

Also, how the heck is a landline cheaper than a prepaid cellphone plan from a discount carrier? Just from a quick google search, there are plans with basic services and 0.5-2 GB of data for $20-25 per month.

I would like to own a burner phone so I could snap the phone and throw it in the trash like they do in the movies.
you're supposed to pull out the chip and eat it.

Sharing a landline with my roommate is still cheaper. Well i might jsut hit the bullet on that one and try and find the cheapest services plan available.

maybe with google voice, but im not sure how that works now.
google voice requires you to use a real phone number to just mask it. kinda bad imo.

there are some services that allow you to use a phone number for like a dollar/euro. some are advertised as "voip" which some apps/websites block. you can get around this though if you do your research.

but you really should get an actual plan op.

This should work fine, I'm pretty sure you can verify with any phone number that you have access to, landline or not. As far as anyone else is concerned, your google voice number is a normal phone and you can do calls over the internet with it.

Why do you need a service plan? Is Canada so fucking backward that pay-as-you-go doesn't exist?

You could get a Green Dot card to use instead of a credit card.

You should cancel your landline and get a pay-as-you-go plan.

Options to consider:

  1. Freedom Mobile 1.5GB Talk + Text Plan for best Smartphone plan: $19/month
  2. Koodo $15 Base Plan with Boosters for best Talk and Text plan: $15/month
  3. SpeakOut 7-Eleven $25 365-Day Voucher for Pay As You Go plan: $25/year
I'd also recommend researching who has the best coverage based on your area.

You can get a serviceable smartphone for around $50, especially if all you're going to do is talk and text, but I recommend one that has supports 4G LTE at least, because mobile data is highly convenient.

You may also want to consider alternative payment methods like Google Pay, or bypass Paypal entirely by using your debit card for online purchases. If you don't have a debit card, you can easily get one.

I've had this problem before, and I've had no luck with using fake SMS phone numbers. Just get a cell phone.

If you can't receive SMS, most sites will support calling you with a verification number instead, if they don't, contact support.

Yeah why do you need a paypal account anyway? Fuck paypal. If it's just for generic online purchases maybe it's best we find a solution to that?
You could just buy prepaid debit cards or something. You may be able to save a lot of hassle by just tackling this from another direction.

Most Google Voice numbers are blocked for these verifications now, if not all of them.
I just used one for a service 2 weeks ago and it worked fine when all of the free sms services would not. It's probably a step up above those as far as trustworthiness. I think paypal would accept it since you have to give so much other personal info that they can probably verify on the fly anyway.

Anybody fucked with that Mint Mobile shit? Is it as a good of a deal as it seems?

I use Google voice for verification, whatsapp and other mundane shit i don't want associated with my 'real' phone.
It works great. Would reccomend if youre using it for normie purposes.
