Yahtzee's review of Fallout 76 is up on the Escapist's website.

"Don't tell me that those dastardly unpleaseable fanboys who ruined Diablo Immortal's big day in the spotlight have struck again. How dare those horrible nerds make such spoiled, entitled demands for reasonably-priced franchise installments targeted at the people who made their franchise popular in the first place! It's just bullying really, isn't it? If only these dissatisfied consumers with very little actual power and influence would stop bullying the poor innocent massively wealthy corporations, and leave them in peace to hack out inferior garbage, designed to siphon money from idiots and exploit what positive emotions remain un-strangled out of existence. Yeah, push that narrative, games industry! It worked for the Ghostbusters reboot!

Since the gaming industry is as big as it is now. I think it would be a nice time to actually protect consumers somewhat and implement some industry standards. These games with endless buy in beta periods that end up being shut down a year later, and games being released that need day 1, day 10, day 20 patches to even work.

Any other industry in the world would've had lawsuits out the ass for this amount of shoddy work.

It's like if you bought the Avengers movie, but the entire movie was pre-effects and partly unedited, so you could see the stunt wires and greenscreens and people talking to nobody, and the studio promised you a real copy of the movie in 6 months. Would everyone be just like "*shrug* thats how movies are"

For sure. Anything with a Beta basically means "This is the finished project, but we won't say it's the finished project because we want people stupid or gullible enough to believe that the game will release in a better state than it will". Same reason I didn't pre-order RDR2 or play any Pay to Play betas. Even though I love RDR2 I'm not spending money on a game until it's released and I see enough to know it wont be a waste of money. Star Citizen fans still getting memed.

Yeah I dunno how people can buy that "too expensive" bullshit in the first place. Surely lots of people ordering the super duper paypig edition will net you more money not less? Since when does production cost more when you work on a larger scale?
It could be that not enough people ordered it

Zenimax owns Bethesda and they're basically the same company.
Yeah but it isn't the same people making the games so it's not their second online game. Same as Mass Effect Andromeda was made by a totally different group of people than who made the other games even though they're owned by the same parent company. Or RDR and GTA V, different studios, different people involved.

Redditors admitting they've been scammed by the same company in the exact same manner. Why should Bethesda waste luxurious materials like burlap or canvas on these fools.

Also, mistaking marketing detritus for a relic of cultural heritage (:_(

This is why I'm laughing so hard at the Fallout 76 mess. People just kept ignoring Bethesda cheaping out and releasing substandard products for so long but now it's impossible to ignore. It was very frustrating in the past to point out all the things they did wrong before and people just kept saying something insipid that brushed away all the flaws.

Not sure if this belongs here, but didn’t John fucking Carmack more or less call Bethesda’s proprietary engine an abomination back when he still worked for them)

If he's referring to Gamebryo, then yes, it's a shitty, outdated engine that Bethesda uses for all their games.

They re-branded it as the Creation Engine for Skyrim to hide the fact that they're still using it (With modifications), but the fact is, it's still the same basic engine.

The problem is Bethesda is the only one really making these kinds of games. If you want a game like Skyrim or FO4 but not want to deal with having to install dozens of mods just so the game works properly and looks somewhat decent, well, you're out of luck. You could try other open world games but they just don't scratch that same itch, that's why people brushed it off before. Plenty of companies make open-world games these days (Rockstar, Projekt RED, Ubisoft, hell even Nintendo) but, for better or worse, no one else makes Bethesda games.

The biggest problem with Fallout 76 isn't necessarily the bugs, I think, although it's a big part of why it's gotten such poor reception. It's that they stripped FO4 of everything that made people brush off all those huge flaws. No interesting NPCs, no real storyline, no companions, no proper VATS, even worse roleplaying/character building and no modding so the only thing still left is the exploring, shooting and looting, and while the exploring and world design is apparently fine but exploring at your own pace doesn't really work if you're playing with friends and the combat from 4 isn't nearly good enough to make twenty minute gun fights engaging and people are constantly fighting against the weight limit despite the bigger focus on collecting every bit of scrap you find to turn into bases or craft guns or whatever. The multiplayer doesn't make up for all the cuts when it's so implemented in such a half-assed manner and the even more severe bugs and framerate issues are just the icing on top of a cake made out of garbage.

The bugs are never the biggest problem, people always talk about bugs dismissively in response to any criticism of Bethesda's games, even if the bugs aren't what's being discussed. "It's a Bethesda game, what do you expect??" I expect gameplay and decent storytelling and worldbuilding, nobody expects Bethesda to release a fully stable bug-free game at launch (although no other studio gets away with this being the standard.) The Bethesda defence squad loves to make every critical discussion just about bugs though.

Ya know, maybe Bugthesda have every honest intention of using canvas, but the Chinese factory they called up already had thousands of nylon bags that were rejected for poor quality just sitting in the warehouse, and they were all like "We have bag! We stitch vaurt boy on nyron bag cheap! Nyron bag like game, need patches! Stitchy stitchy one dorra!"

Did they invest ANY money for this fucking project?
