Fallout series

Huh, so one of the best things about the game was there entirely because of time constraints? Guess that would also explain why its so close in nature to House's quest line.

Makes me wonder how different the factions and main quests would play out if they just decided to go forgo Yes Man and go the Morrowind route and say "you screwed your save, reload an old one"

I just started a Legion playthrough like 2 days ago so it'll be nice to see the espionage aspect of the war, plus the Legion version of the Dam battle is the most unique compared to the other two so that'll be cool too.

Shame the Legion got so gutted though. Makes me kinda wish they did a Broken Steel-esque DLC for them, maybe instead of GRA.
I wish they got expanded because the whole point of the Legion is that they’re going to win the 2nd Battle. Caesar has effectively made it so that the Legion will aim to take the NCR should they get Vegas. Regardless of his death, the momentum of the NCR losing Vegas would give the Legion a goal for Lanius to pursue.

There is enough from the complaints about the NCR to understand why some like them. They keep the roads clear and don’t half ass killing raiders. They really needed a settlement where retired Legionaries and non-slaves are about. The one shitty trader and the dirt was barely anything.

TE6 pre production allegedly started in 2014
"Pre-production." I.E. Todd played on his phone during a meeting where they slapped some concept art on a whiteboard and Emil pooped out a vague story concept, then they never touched it again because Starfield was a hellish dev cycle that required all hands on deck. They did not start actually working on ES6 till that game flopped guaranteed.

Found an actually good Fallout Youtuber. I have been watching this guy who designs armor and weapons from across the Fallout universe, primarily Europe and China.
He recently uploaded some of his Legion armor designs

I've been meaning to give in to the hype and start playing a Fallout game, which one would be the best for me? I've heard people say the first two games are completely different compared to the rest, and most just say to start with the third game.

If you are okay with using mods, I'd recommend "A tale of two wastelands". You'll need a copy of New Vegas as it integrates both games into a seemless improved experience. I use this modlist https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/79547
If you want the best game in the series, go with New Vegas, It's 15 years old, so expect a little jank, but has by far the best story and gameplay.
Fallout 4 is the most recent, non-mmorpg and isn't as bad as online folk say, but definitely play NV first.

Let's simplify: Fallout 1 is an excellent 90ies isometric RPG. It's kind of short (it has in-built time limits) and expects the player to both read and understand what he's doing. You'll be rewarded with a great experience if you can manage endure its relative age, but it's far more playable than BG1 for example.

Fallout 2 is similar to F1, but bigger and not necessarily better. I'd counsel against playing it as a first option, because it's clunky and it's less coherent.

Fallout Tactics is a spinoff that can be ignored for a first-timer.

Then the rights got from the ailing Interplay to Bethesda, and we reach the NuFallouts.

"Fallout" 3 is a standard post-Morrowind Bethesda open world game. Derided by Fallout fans as "Oblivion with Guns" at launch, it nonetheless managed to be a massive success. The moniker isn't improper, though: F3 is essentially a Gamebryo game reskinned with (extremely misunderstood) Fallout ambience. It's a Bethesda game, with all what entails.

Fallout: New Vegas is a stand-alone game on the F3 engine but developed by the original F1/F2 guys. If you want the ambience of F1/2 and the engine of F3 is the best option, but it's still a Gamebryo game, so inherently mediocre in RPG mechanics.

Fallout 4 is more of a shooter, less of a RPG, and probably the only thing going for it is Fallout: London.

In short: Want the original experience? Fallout 1. Want the Gamebryo-with-adequate-writing experience? New Vegas.

fallout 1 and 2 are a fucking drag and nobody should be playing them on the year of our lord 2025. play new vegas with the quality of life essential mods and then do a modded to hell and back run

On the contrary: Fallout 1 is probably one of the most approachable isometric RPGs ever made. Single character, relatively low-level cap and you'll never reach it during standard play, game is relatively short and direct (almost all areas are self-contained bar exploration/radiation equipment). Interface is still functional and the ruleset, while clunky at times, is clearly explained by the manual (ah yes, the games that required you to read the manual).

You can compare it to contemporaries like Bethesda's own Daggerfall that is positively atrocious to play for the uninitiated. I'd dare to say that only Diablo 1 is easier, but you're comparing a fully-fledged exploration/dialogue/combat RPG with a loot simulator.

F3 is a weird hybrid of a walking sim and a bad shooter with RPG characteristics. Bethesda never managed to properly handle its own engine or its own design, and it is a testament to Black Isle's excellent world building (progressively mangled by Bethesda until they had to be original in F4, with the results we all see) and excellent Bethesda marketing/catering to the lowest common denominator (console players) that it managed to be such a success. New Vegas itself struggles in trying to be a "real Fallout game" inside an engine that clearly can't cope.

Also, New Vegas managed in the years to gain a fandom that truly puts me off, being a Black Isle appreciator is for sure a better fate. Then one should discuss Tactics an' shit, but we're not in the old NMA forums here.

if you are very normie: play Fallout 3, then New Vegas, then 4.
If you are normie but can handle jank: play Fallout 3, then Fallout 1 & 2, then New Vegas and 4. (MY RECOMMENDATION)
not normie: play in release order

Fallout 1, 2 and NV make up the west coast story, Fallout 3 and 4 make up the east coast story. Both have slight connections to each other.

TIPS FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL GAME
Overall
No, you don't need mods. Just download the things and go. If you have issues, consult PCGamingWiki's Fallout articles.
Do not, I repeat, do not interact with the fanbase unless you have to.

Fallout 1
You will hate this game on the first and second playthrough, and you likely won't finish it on your first try. But you'll find that once you get your grove the game is hard to put down. Like every fallout game it can be abused, but FO1&2 have a much harder learning curve and expect you to pay attention. If you are struggling pick Skilled GIFTED as one of your traits. Don't take Energy Weapons or Big Guns for tag skills. ALWAYS take a high agility special. Despite its issues its still a great game and has aged better than most. oh, and DO NOT SAVE DURING COMBAT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, YOU WILL BRICK YOUR SAVE!

Fallout 2
All of the above applies here as well. Basically a Fallout 1 mod. Much more complex and harder than Fallout 1. Unlike in FO1, you will go without a gun for a good while, so maybe think about tagging Unarmed or Melee Weapons instead of Small Guns. This game has the most companions and is at its best when you play into its post-apocalyptic road trip with all your buddies, so take a high Charisma stat if possible. Way longer than Fallout 1 but also more bloated because of it.

Fallout 3
Bethesda's first entry in the series. Way way easier than Fallout 1 & 2. Very odd in that its basically Fallout 1 in 3D. (despite this being a sequel to FO2) You can tag any skill or special and be fine, as you'll get pretty much every weapon type within the first 3-4 hours. Unlike Fallout 1 or 2, don't try to follow any character creation guides. When you first walk outside to the first town (megaton), find a rock near the backside of the town exterior, you'll find some early game goodies in a hollowed out rock. Fallout 3 walked so NV could run. Play this before NV as it might be hard to go back. 3 has a better overworld for exploring though. Don't miss out on the DLC.

Fallout NV
Basically the real Fallout 3, made by mostly Fallout 1&2 devs via Obsidian. Fallout NV is to Fallout 3 what Fallout 2 is to Fallout 1. FNV is a gameplay sequel to Fallout 3, and a narrative sequel to Fallout 2. All you need to know is don't go north out of Goodsprings unless you have a death wish. If you find that about halfway through the game your save wont load (infinite loading screen), start a new game, skip the cutscene to load into the actual game itself, then load your other save via the menu. Just enjoy the best game in the series. Don't miss out on the DLC either.

Fallout 4
Bethesda's second entry and the most normie game of the series, don't go into it expecting it to pick up on any of FNV's lessons. Don't expect it to pick up on any of Fallout 3's either. Special matters a bit more than the other games as for whatever bright reason they dropped the skills system entirely. Basically a direct sequel and a gameplay "sequel" to Fallout 3. The only recommendation I have is this load accelerator plugin, as the load times for the game are atrocious without it. I don't know what black magic they made with this, but it works, and it works well. Please play the Far Harbor DLC as it shows what 4 could've been with a competent writing team.

Thanks. I'm gonna guess F76 is an unspoken rule to not talk about. I've heard it's absolutely terrible but got fixed recently.
Wouldn't know, haven't played it in years. All I remember is being bored and hating how shoved in the multiplayer aspect was. Maybe one day ill force myself to do a playthrough of the main quest to see. Hopefully when it dies they'll rip out the online components for offline play but who knows. Really its just a mod for 4.

I also forgot about tactics, which is there, haven't played it so I can't say but there are a couple folks in this thread who really like. From what I can gather its just a more combat oriented Fallout 1&2 spinoff.

Brotherhood of Steel exists, but sucks from what I know and have seen.

Haven't watched the TV show, but If you end up getting into the lore don't watch it, it has several outright contradictions with pre-existing lore. Just think of it as an alternate what-if scenario.

When I first played The Pitt, I sided against Ashur and regretted my decision due to the number of named henchmen with unique dialog that I briefly spoke to while in his fortress. It gave me the impression that siding against him would make the player miss out on a huge glut of content where he get a better understanding of Ashur and his henchmen as we do missions for him. Imagine my disappointment when, after siding with him on my second playthrough, I find out that there was no more content to be seen or story to be told. All those seemingly interesting henchmen that I had talked to where one note, one dialog npcs only there to give the illusion character within his ranks. Siding with Ashur didn't even unlock more dialog choices with them.

Welcome to Bethesda. Mfs like to show glimpses of good ideas only to blue ball players when they think they're getting something with depth

Back to the games, I feel like people don’t actually get why the Legion is winning in the Mojave. Chief Hanlon basically lays it out, the NCR is not serious and the Legion is. The NCR lets poorly trained troops get mutilated by the Legion, the Rangers and Recon are the only well-trained units and they are spread thin and the 1st Recon is low morale and can barely deal with a rapist who fucks a cow.

NCR has A LOT holding it back from fighting this at their full potential, a lot of it is thanks to themselves but their main trading route getting nuked to shit caused a bad situation to get worse as resources and recruits now take even longer to arrive from back home.

And the sad fact is that a lot of the brahmin barons and land owners arent taking this seriously, thus the politicians in their payrolls arent either and Ceasar is not only aware of this but taking as much advantage of it as he can. The Legion REALLY fucking wants the Dam and The Mojave but to many in the NCR, it is "Just" another piece of land with a pretty useful structure that could ease some problems back home, little do they know that it becomes very clear through the Legate that they'll def. be coming for California if they do win this.

But hey, for all we know, The Legion ending IS canon, then they marched to the NCR, were about to have an epic battle and suddenly a nuke dropped ontop of them, resulting in an atomic cloud shaped like Todd Howard's face.

Obviously sounding like this

If Nate was forced to be a military vet I wish they took the system shock 2 method where you could choose a branch and have your service choices determine starting stats.

It WOULD be unique if picking between Nate and Nora meant anything beyond gender as picking the former would allow for more combat driven stats and the latter more non combat driven stats from the get go (basically working like the Tag system).

And the funny thing is that Fallout 1 and 2 kind of had that in the form of pre-built characters as they had profiles, designs, backstories and stats that match it.

But here we are, discussing how F4 could have been improved with...actually really fucking simple alterations that no doubt wouldnt have required much but uhhh...yeah...
