Not any named character, but I would prefer a woman from one of the least shit vaults. Far cleaner than wastelanders (depending on where you are, even in FNV a lot of people were pretty filthy) probably won't instantly die from whatever I bring with me (there's never been a case that I know of where a wastelander killed entire vaults by bringing in outside germs nor a wandering vault dweller dying from a new variant of the common cold that I know of), good chance of good genes or other desirable traits from who they let in when the bombs fell depending on the vault, functional vaults that aren't 100% fucked usually have its residents perform some form of skilled labor, and if I can even interact with vault dwellers to begin with chances are the vault itself is pretty alright and I may even become a resident and escape the wasteland.
I repeat, it depends on the vault but I like my chances.

When I first did that quest it pissed me off so bad I never recruited her on any subsequent playthroughs.

That fucking state of modding back in like 2014 when I first started was pretty interesting, Project Nevada was the shit, NMM was still around, and MO1 still only worked with Skyrim so FOMM was recommended by nerds and fags who knew shit. Shit like BLIND was top files and caused game breaking bugs. I think the most popular unlimited companion mod was created with the GECK's "recompile all scripts" function so installing it inevitably giga fucked your game. I think I remember starting a really fucked play through that included NVEC and FOOK which are now so old and broken that gigatroons who know shit get a conniption everytime they're mentioned. I think the only saving grace of that era was that discord wasn't the mainstay it now is with all its annoying cultural quirks, its not like forums were any better, but still.

The creators are gigatroons but Best of Times and VNV are pretty great

I've read that Vulkan compatibility (along with other fixes) has fixed the memory crashing mostly for FNV/TTW.

Is this true? I'm trying to get it working for windows 11 for TTW.

2014 was just a shit year for modding in general, in my experience anyway. I think later years were a mixed bag but around this time was just my worst experiences. We've come a long way from the absolute madhouse, and I'm grateful for VNV and other lists (such Phoenix Flavor for Skyrim) like these that help new modders and veterans alike.

I've tried it and it does stabilize the game a lot more after a while (needs to render the game's shaders which doesn't take long). There's only so much you can do with NV without the source code but it gets the job done. Can only recommend you try it and see if it does anything for you.

BoS is such a funny game, because that level of obscene T&A, vulgarity and unrefinment marks it as so extremely of it's time that you might not be able to make it more mid 00's gaming if you went in with the intention to outdo it. Postal 2 is the only other contender for that title, but it manages to be endearing, whereas BoS is just revolting, the fact that it is also not fun to play doesn't help.

What about the Handmade Rifle? It's literally just a lefty AK and on a similar measure I'd go to bat for the hunting rifle as long as it has the proper full stock and a proper barrel on it too. They might be subhuman lefty versions but they look nice overall. Hell I'd even go to bat for the .44 Revolver too, but then again it is hard to fuck up a revolver.
