I still find it super funny that the main Slaver villain in Fo3 is a Black guy.
It's worth noting too that the leader of the Abolitionists/anti-slave faction (Hannibal Hamlin) was probably going to be a white guy originally, based on his appearance in the ending slides.

So the pro-slave guy and anti-slave guy would've been black and white respectively.

Hamlin was named after the (White) Vice President of the same name that served during Abraham Lincoln's first term so it would make sense conceptually if the character was meant to be White originally. Guess Bethesda thought that a White abolitionist fighting against a Black slaver would make things awkward and controversial.

It does seem like a mid 2000s progressive move to make the pro slavery character black and anti slavery character white.

The only positive to 3 was having Liam Neeson as my dad
Nah sorry man, Neeson was the worst part of 3, they could've gotten one of the other 10-12 VA's they had and they would've done a better job than Neeson's wooden acting.

That's not even an indictment against Neeson as an actor, he just doesn't like doing video games and it shows, in the making of video he's struggling to even give more than a single crap.

Probably doesn't help that they most likely didn't give him any backstory or motivation for James like they did for Patrick Stewart in oblivion (the better bethesda celeb cameo)

This is true. I think it doesn't help that Neeson doesn't ever add any emotion into his performances, that works great for a reserved character like Qui-Gon, but man James just comes off as emotionless in the game. His holotapes are also like the only time I have to actively tamer with my audio settings because he whispers in all of them.

The part about not having a background for James makes sense, wasn't Oblivion the last Beth game to use design docs?

There is, it's just not particularly impressive.
Liam Neeson tells you this when asked:
"Project Purity was underway long before you were born. There were many of us, including your mother, who devoted our lives to it. The idea of free, clean water for everyone drove us to succeed. So many sacrifices were made for that idea. My responsibility is to see it through to the end, to make sure those sacrifices mean something."
"It started as an idea, really. Remember the Bible passage your mother loved so much? Free, clean water for everyone. What a difference it could make in the lives of everyone here in the Wastes. Over time, that idea took the form of a purifier. Not like the one in the Vault, though. This one was gigantic, capable of purifying millions of gallons of water at once. We used the old Jefferson Memorial for the location, right on DC's Tidal Basin. Someday soon, I hope you'll see it work."
And that's pretty much Neeson's motivation and backstory top to bottom. He doesn't exist separate from Project Purity.

He's arguably a worser father to the Fallout 3 protag than Shaun was a bad son to the Fallout 4 protag. They were both anal on their fixation (Project Purity/The Institute) but at least Shaun tried to get you involved beyond the role of lackey lmao. Liam Neeson's last day with the player (considering how fast the tasks take) are:
1) "Kill mutants."
2) "Push buttons and pull switches."
3) "I'm so proud of you/disappointed in you." (Megaton choice)
4) Commits the most pointless suicide of all time considering Enclave or BoS, Project Purity would be a success and free water would trickle out to people in some form or another (The Enclave/Autumn intends to use the water to leverage control over Maryland, something the BoS end up doing anyway)

Fun fact: you can find a single audio log of your mother (the one who died ;( ), and it's of the seconds leading up to her getting Neeson'd and (probably) conceiving the protag:
...that batch of tests was inconclusive, but Madison and I are convinced it's a problem with the secondary filtration system. We’re going to re-calibrate the equipment and try again tomorrow, so that... James, please, I’m trying to work. Now’s not the time... So that's the next step. Assuming we get the results we need, we'll move on to... James! Stop! I need to finish these notes... We'll move on to diagnosing the issues with the radiation dampeners. That should... Ow! James! Now? We really shouldn't... Ha ha ha ha ha!
Considering how important the protag's mother is to the plot since Project Purity is her passion, the fact we get zero audiologs of substance from her feels like a missed opportunity.

I do wish 3, 4, and NV did more with time skips in the stories, FO1 and 2 always were better in this regard because it really was an adventure that took place over a year or two. At best even if you're like me and you purposely wait a couple days for things to make "sense" FO3 is at best like maybe 8-9 months.

There's a minor chance that he somehow knew about Eden's plan to poison it, but the execution of said plan requires the player in lieu of Autumn very fucking clearly not being there for that one to begin with so it's still pointless.

it makes sense to me since I always bought the theory that James is an Brotherhood scribe who married Catherine who was an Enclave Scientist.
