You are one of the great short story writers of our generation, my friend. It's equal parts story and philosophical statement on the human condition. The paradoxical dichotomy yet indistinguishable sameness of Old Guy vis a vis Scarecrow is a haunting, defining theme of your masterfully-woven tale, sure to strike a chord and linger in the minds of any reader fortunate enough to come across "Farmer and Scarecrow in Cornfield." The stylistic choice of rendering "Cornfield" as one word in the title and "Corn Field" in the text's body is a detail that's easy to overlook, but immensely significant when one puts the pieces together. By extension, the title bestows upon us a detail not present in the text: Old Man is, in fact, a farmer. Amongst the humblest of professions, looked down upon by many due to lacking the glamor of urbanized society, and yet one which is fundamentally necessary. Old Man allows for society as a whole to function, literally producing the sustenance for humanity and by extension, the cultural and material excesses it produces, as Athena sprung forth from Zeus' split head, once again presenting another striking contrast through dichotomy. You tell us so much through the beautiful Rembrandt-esque images and your poetic prose, yet we still find ourselves demanding answers, frustrating yet satisfying ourselves when none are forthcoming.

Truly, in the end, we must all ask ourselves: are we Old Guy, or are we Scarecrow? A question which will keep readers awake many a night as they ponder the very essence of the human condition.

The things that lie hidden just beneath the surface are much worse than some 'Scary Story to tell in the dark', I'm afraid. Once you see them, you can't ever stop...no matter how deeply you wish you could go back to having all the wrong answers, go back to being blind again. Once you realize that you've just been seeing "scarecrows" all your life everything starts to make a whole lot more sense.

But knowing the truth doesn't make it any less painful or frightening.
