I usually do better. When I do my own thing, that is. Never was a fun of fixing someone's shit.

It's amazing how cutting out all the nonsensical unnecessary details does so much to improve the art. It's like the original artist didn't know what they wanted to draw and just stopped when it looked finished.

I think we all do that to some extent when we start out, just start drawing and don't stop until it "feels" done. I probably could've stood to add more details from the OG back in, like the heart holes in the sock lace or the bow on the sunhat, but just streamlining the design was my biggest priority. I wish I knew more about the character so I knew what to focus on, but for all I know it was just an excuse for the artist to illustrate "look at you, strawberry cow!"

Yeah, I guess. But it's such an ugly clash of poor design choices. The cow eyes versus the sclera-eyelash-blobs, the bull ring on a cow, the gunt versus the skirt, and the stretch marks I wouldn't expect even on a realistic drawing of a fatty. I don't even know how someone could use so many clashing styles and not see an issue.

To end this year of lossmanjack and other lolcows taking very big Ls, I had to redraw this one.
The Gorillaz fanart was disgusting to look at, so I wanted to shove my OCs into the redraw instead. Wanted to try out some aesthetic-kind of style of filter, which I am not the type to use it as it is not my kind; but why not trying it out? Application used is Clip Studio Paint, with random usage of some assets I had downloaded until it looks good enough for the illustration.

Saw something in the SJW art thread I just had to fix. The original had so much going wrong:

I had to just sit down and identify the problems. Horrible proportions, mammy hands, weird blobby nondescript shoes (I'm guilty of this too most of the time but at least I'm not selling the design,) and "subtle" DTM style nonbinary nails and jewellery. The design by itself isn't too bad, so I didn't set out to change it very much. At first I was just gonna make an edit, so I have this:

But then as I was going to warp the body around to try and make it look better, I got froggy and decided fuck it, why not just draw it? That way I could fix the fat elephant legs, the stiff pose, and all the other little details that were bugging me.

Her design ended up a little different, but I tried to stay true to the vibe of the original. One change I did make intentionally was to fix her shoes by copying an actual pair of goth boots I'd saved a pic of ages ago:

I also thought the glowing gold accents were a nice touch, like she's not just goth but she's a witch. The purple/yellow color scheme made her look really cool and magical, and you could still read her as the nonbinary flag if you wanted to. I think people get really hung up on cramming the flag schemes into every inch of a character when all you really have to do is make a color hierarchy with the most recognizable colors at the top (in this case yellow and purple, and the darkness practically stands in for the black.)
I just finished this so I'm still proud of it. Give me a day or two and I'll be picking out all the little flaws that bother me, but for now I think it looks really good. THIS is a character someone would adopt right here!
