Favorite and Least Favorite Protagonists in Video games - The thread where we sperg about the people we play as

Luke from Tales of the Abyss is godawful and whiny, and I don't care that there's a story reason, it's not enough to make up for it.

I like the main helper NPC's in the Souls series (Sun Man, Memory Woman and Onion man) even though there's not lots of character to them.

Can't believe I forgot about Drakengard. Yeah, he's a huge step down from Caim.

What I wouldn't give for that first game to be competently remade.

Ah Caim.

"what will the hero of the game be, oh designer Taro Yoko"

"make him a mute bloodthirsty sociopath who speaks through murder. the first engine cutscene shall have him stab a dead body half a dozen times. and give him a dragon to ride on"

I love everything about Drakengard except the gameplay. It's such a wonderfully fucked up, transgressive series of counterpoints to stale JRPG tropes and fantasy nonsense. I think it might have one of the most refreshing and creative game stories of the era. Certainly it has some of the most interesting characters.

I could name a half a dozen "favorite" protagonists. It's too damned hard to pick just one.

But I'll do it! For you folks! Let it never be said I don't do the impossible for y'all.

I'm gonna toss out Silas Greaves, from Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Although I will admit, why I like him so much is not just down to him being a fairly awesome figure, but because of how excellently his story is told.

If you've never played it, you're Silas Greaves, an outlaw and cowboy in the 1860s. But the way the story is told is with a constant, running narration from your own character, decades later, as an old, worn-down man in some bar in the early 1900s, telling his story to the people in the bar. And the thing is... Silas is an old drunk. His memory is spotty, sometimes he's full of shit, and sometimes the stories people have told about him are wildly exaggerated. The narrative from Silas flows almost constantly while you play, they recorded a truely staggering amount of it. And it can cause the game to re-write itself as you play. You might get done with one encounter, only for someone at the bar to call Silas on his bullshit, and then have time to rewind, and your enemies to be greater, or lesser, or be doing something different, or a band of Indians instead of a band of outlaws...

But Silas himself is fun. He's old, he's cynical as hell, he's done everything, seen everything, killed everything. He's almost at the end of his story, and he's absolutely willing to wile away his time telling it to people in the bar.

And, I mean, c'mon. The trailer for the game is The Ballad of Silas Greaves.

Least favorite is Sonic the Hedgehog. Because fuck that blue menace, and why the hell he has such a creepy cult following I'll never understand. Nothing about him or his world are at all compelling, and I grew up in the damned late 80s, early 90s era where he was basically created as a digital golem stitched together from all the "tude" and "awesome" of the era.

Classic sonic: little guy who fights against things which are bigger and mightier than him, just to get to help his friends in need and also manages to have fun while doing so.
The shitty american marketing had really made him a disservice, with their portrayal of the character, especially if you look at stuff like adventures of sonic the hedgehog.

Dante but mostly kamiya's vision of him, so dmc1 dante.
Cocky playful but also serious when shits getting real.
Dmc3 dante is fine as a teenager but in 4 he is pretty much the same as he was in 3.
Also it is kind of annoying how we never got a proper game with only adult dante in it.
Dmc1 was pretty experimental and unripe. Dmc2 sucked ass and he barely spoke. Dmc3 he was a teenager. From 4 and on itsuno decided that he had to become a bufoon and not be the protagonist of the series anymore.

Leon kennedy: I like his transformation from gudboy beta cop, to alpha badass agent who is gonna kick your ass and get all the bitches.
Makes him feel more like a real person, who has matured during the years.

Modern sonic: he is pretty much what sonic shouldnt be.
He never stfu and his games are mostly mediocre.
He applies only to autistic kids who still think naruto shippuden is cool.

Favorite: Niko Bellic from Grand Theft Auto IV. His cynical view on American culture was comical and true in some cases. He would often be around characters that would allow his to express his viewpoint and personality depending on the situation. His quest on revenge was understanding, although juxtaposed on the will to make money with the "American dream". He was more honest than typical "good guy" tropes, despite being a hardened criminal. He's loyal, determined, flawed and philosophical during his story.

Least Favorite: Ratchet from Ratchet & Clank (2016). This video properly explains it best, but I'll say my piece too. Compared to previous games, Ratchet acts more childish and cliche, along with other characters. He talks too much, makes cringeworthy one-liners, blindly worships one guy and loses his original identify that made him enjoyable. This whimsical, cartoon character has little deviation with his character. Catering to children makes him embarrassing to be around with.

Tatsuya from yakuza:black panther
He goes from a psychopath that murders civilians in cold blood and laughts about it to a relatable characters after other characters call him out for the psychopath that he is and he starts to change and become a better person
Shame that in the sequel he gets everything he loves destroyed and realizes the only thing that brings him any joy after the events of the second game is fighting on an illegal fighting tournament to the death

I have some favorites but that's not what I came here to say. I need to get my least-favorites out of my system first and foremost.

Ethan FUCKING Mars and Madison FUCKING Paige from Heavy Rain.

maxresdefault.jpg

Fuck these two assholes. Ethan's a basketcase with a weird pseudo-American voice because the French actor couldn't sound like a real human being for the American dub. He runs around like a loon wailing for his dead/potentially dead kids and has the funniest goddamn reactions to things because he just sounds so derpy and ridiculous. He makes my cut because he's just self-righteous enough to be irritating but is mostly just there for lulz.

Madison is the real fucked up one here. She has no real purpose to the plot other than to act as Ethan's shoulder to cry on despite barely knowing him and hits on him in the middle of him looking for his KIDNAPPED SON. She also strips in front of a pervert for "girl power" and is involved in at least four creepy rape scenarios over the course of the game. If she gets killed off then so fucking what--we still got Agent Norman Jayden solving the mystery for her. She adds nothing and IS nothing.

....Favorites include Samus, Chell, and Snake, I guess. I kind of honestly just wanted to rant about David Cage Characters there for a sec.

Sonic was always for autists.

Without giving these questions any real thought, Cole Phelps from L.A. Noire immediately popped into my head in the "least favorite" category.

He is a self-righteous hypocrite who doesn't care about anything other than advancing his own career, who is a complete disgrace as a detective (see first spoiler below, as the formatting broke when I put it here), and who is so tactless and socially incompetent that I found myself questioning whether he was supposed to be literally high-functioning autistic (not in a Kiwifarms sense, in a legit DSM sense).

The player is given no choice but to bring forward trumped-up charges against what turn out to be innocent people, based on flimsy evidence.

His death at the end didn't have much of an impact given that he was a complete asshole throughout the game up until that point.

Doubt all people who liked sonic as a kid, were autisitc.
Depends on how much you like sonic.

Me and my friend only owned 2-3 sonic games, where kinda autistic. I have another friend who owned every sonic game released after 1999. He's REALLY fucking autistic.

Most hated is Vaan and to a lesser degree Penelo in FF12, because they distract from the political intrigue and supernatural elements of the plot... and Vaan's voice/speech-patterns are annoying.

I don't have a favorite.

Really good mentions in here.

Samus (Before Team Ninja ruined her) is pretty high up there. But as far as my list of favorite it pretty much coincide with my list of waifus ;P

But protagonist I hate? Oh boy... Well we can start with Other M Samus (THE BABY! THE BABY! THE BABY!)

Aiden Pierce, AKA, I'm so mad that my crossing over some people got my niece killed. Really fucking hard to sympathize with somebody who's entire fate is because he screwed people over. I'm supposed to feel bad? That you're on a revenge killing spree because somebody took revenge on you. Two wrongs don't make a right! Also, how many other people's nieces did you kill by hacking those traffic lights and causing 10+ car pileups?

New Lara: I'm one of the few people who think she looked better than the original (Altho she really seems to get plainer looking with each game). But everything else, god, she has so much daddy issues. You know she's going to end up some 50+ dude's cum dumpster. Gotta work those daddy issues! I can't believe she's still going on about this shit in the third game OMG CHARACTERS GROW!!!!

Gordon Freeman. That's right! Come at me, I'll fight you! There are place where a silent protagonist works. Half-life did because at that time, protagonists in FPS did not generally speak. Sin's dude was one of the few exceptions. But playing HL2 which has such an emphasis on story, and to just be this sap who seems to have no will of his own, just doing what everybody else tells him to do. I know he's supposed to be a vehicle for the player and it would have been fine if I didn't see him get elevated to such a god status by the nerds. Presented like such a badass and stuff. He's a MIT nerd, I always figured his experience in HL was a harrowing one. Not one he comes back from all badass and shit.

Sonic, he's responsible for so many god damn furries.

I could keep going but I'm gonna blow a vein at this rate.
