Favourite "Old Internet" stuff - Let's reminisce about the Wild West days

I miss YouTube. By that, I mean pre-Google YouTube. Before it was overrun by bots, content farms, and Gen Alpha. Back then, it was so fun and exciting. The internet wasn't something we relied on and used daily, let alone replaced parenting with so that amount of time you were allowed to get online as a kid was special. Viral videos from a few years back, I've already forgotten about. But Potter Puppet Pals, Llamas with Hats, Keyboard Cat, all of those videos carved out a stupid obnoxious fucking hole in my heart that will probably remain even when I'm 90.

Real 2000's niggas remember looking up Action Replay cheats:

From the 90s: using programs like Citadel (and another one, Blue something? It played a clip of 311’s “Down” when you opened it) to kick people out of AOL chat rooms and acting like a badass hacker.

From the 2000s: AudioGalaxy, before it merged with Napster. It was the perfect time to be at university, before high speed internet was widespread and most of the big sharers were on campuses, and you had giant audiophile nerds who really knew what they were doing ripping things like soundtracks directly from games and uploading them. I went from buying Devil May Cry when it came out and then downloading the entire soundtrack within the course of a week, and that was before you could find any music you could imagine on YouTube.

Sometimes I can still hear him say o h y e a h :heart-empty:

really stretching 'old' and 'Internet' but when i was in 1st grade we used to use a drawing program called KidPix (delux 3d version iirc)

Lots of good memories on old macintoshes, like trying to coordinate the shift button to capitalize and thinking about how ridiculously long email addresses were.

Mackiev, the devs, seemingly have not updated their site in ten years and its also fun to look at.

Kid Pix was the shit, the ones we used was even more ghetto. I liked how the images would make sounds when you applied them. The 90's aesthetic one is kino.

Yall remember Is Anyone Up? It came out and all the trashy girls at my high school posted n00dz there. At the time it was hilarious, because you really knew who the skanks were. But now I realized they were posting free cheeze pizza. The tagline was #nbnc or no butthole no care, because the owner was obsessed with asshole shots.

Speaking of which:

The Sparta one popped back into my head recently because, of all reasons, I was reading Herodotus's Histories and I got to the parts about the 300 Spartans and the Persians. The other two I put in this post were old favorites of mine, too.

One of the reasons I'm here is because I fucking miss forums.
The one I'll always remember and consider my "Internet childhood home" was Orochinagi.com, a fighting games forum centered around SNK games. I have fond memories of it, and I'm still in frequent contact with a couple friends I made there.
Good times.

Going to the computer lab back in elementary school just to mess around on KidPix was the shit :)

I can still hear the “my bad” sound clip in my head

I live in a small country so me and fellow trolls from proto-socialmedia met up either in groups or one on one from time to time, I used to know their names but I've forgotten most of them. What was interesting was that I never knew what to expect and I was often surprised by who these posters turned out to be and how wholesome it always felt. A surprising amount of women as well, I say it was surprising because most of the time I only found that out when meeting [funny username]. Credit to those ladies and their funny shitposting skills, they were indistinguishable from funny men. These days we have funny looking women that are indistinguishable from men...
Whereas anybody who does the same kind of meetup these days with anyone from modern sites like reddit is much more likely to have this experience:

i'd have to go with older mmos like UO and meridian 59. Back then everybody knew everybody, and hell even these days everybody still knows everybody in meridian and there are still feuds going on between players that go back to stupid shit somebody did in 1996. But even then as some of the older players have died off over the last couple decades they always get a statue put up of them and a writeup when somebody inevitably finds out about it. You don't see things like that happen in very many other communities and despite the name, there are very few real communities left on the internet. Reddit? Fuck no, thats just a mass of people who happen to post in the same subreddit because everybody kind of migrated there because of how social media took over. The internet has managed to become bigger than it ever was and deader than it ever was at the same time. and as a byproduct of that its leaked into the real world quite a bit as well - polarizing people and groups until everybody is part of some kind of faction in some way or assumed to be by everyone else who is, so even hobby groups, schools, colleges and offices are starting to reflect the same shit that goes on all over the internet. None of those are anything like they used to be a couple decades ago

It shows just how much of a cancer modern social media truly is. It makes me wonder if maybe public access to the internet should have stayed as dialup access, which would have prevented a large part of the shit that happened since greater speed allowed far more advanced sites to be developed that allowed for modern social media

Despite how cool and awesome things like datamining and modding are, I wish we could actually go back to the days where those things weren't gaining such a massive traction. Video game myths were the shit, man. Hearing your friends or a family relative talk about how they saw Bigfoot in San Andreas, or how murlocs were gonna be a playable race in World of Warcraft was the best thing ever. Rumours like those just made you want to experience more of the game or come up with your own wacky stuff, and sometimes they turned out to be true, like the upsidedown sinners from WoW.

Why is it that listening to old meme music makes me happy.....and their really isnt anything like that today

Pre-youtube. Individual fan/hate sites that seemingly stopped updating after I found it. I had a lot of folders and subfolders of just these sites to help echo chamber my life.
Ooh do you mean fanlistings/hatelistings? I used to have a few of them back when I was a younger weirdo. They were fun! It was like a webring-type thing but everyone had just moved on from Geocities/Angelfire and had their own domain and hosting + self-taught PHP/HTML. I used to spend ages making layouts that the user could change themselves and making icons with those cute little pixel fonts.

And then I got into wordpress and immediately forgot how to code. Oh well.

There is still a fanlistings site but it's obviously not at all how it used to be back in 05.

I think the first site I ever used properly was bolt.com, it was fun collecting all the badges even though all the sweepstakes stuff was US only. First place I ever saw tubgirl. Fun times.

there's so much like 2000-2010s shit i miss online. nowadays it feels like the only websites that exist are like, all the recognisable social medias. i miss being able to search for forums entirely dedicated to my interests & being able to find active ones instead of all communities being on like 2 sites & mingled in with shit i dont care about! i miss all of the flash games i can't access anymore! i miss the way early 2010s youtube looked, i miss using watchfreeanime websites to watch yugioh and shit... once the internet was accessible through your phone & became super integrated into every day life is when the fun started getting sucked out of it for me. nowadays you make appointments online, do banking online, etc etc, and that may have existed back then too but it's just so normal now. i miss when the internet was smaller... rose tinted glasses may be the culprit for it partly i guess, everything seems more fun when you're 13. felt like website design was so much nicer back then too due to it being in its early stages, i can't stand the sleek minimalist shit every website has going on now, it feels so empty & devoid, just designed to be a solid colour, easy & quick & lacking any charm or lingering identity to it

It would be like "Darry's Anti-Apple Computers site", because I gave a shit about that stuff back then. Stupid animated gifs of imacs being cartoonishly burnt and tesimonials about how much the computer lab at school sucked. When id find these sites theyd be updated the week prior to when I found them, and then oddly enough, updated up to one more time before being abandoned.

Portalofevil.com

It was just so much fun to see the random webpages made by people that were found and commented on by the community. I still remember one page that was dedicated to this fucked up cat breed that looked like melted wax. Honestly it was like a pre-forum version of Kiwifarms back in 2003, they gleefully posted links to weird websites created by what are now known as lolcows, and had comments on the postings.
