She's probably more concerned that he run errands for her so that her current residence fills up with new kindling and her belly stays full of gas station microwave burgers. Beyond that, she doesn't give a shit about him.

It's because his process is entirely backwards. We conclude connections when the evidence points us that way. Chris decides there should be a connection because it would be easier for him to think about, then rewrites his interpretations of things (or makes up lies) to support his wish.
