In many places, it's actually illegal to direct protests directly at someone's residence. (The constitutionality of such regulation is often questionable, however.)

In nearly all cases, though, it's a seriously dick move done by creeps and assholes, whether legal or not.

Careful now. It doesn't actually have to be effective to be assault. We don't want to set precedental standards that would make it impossible to accuse Phil of assault the next time he fails to "defend himself" from someone photographing him flipping through a cell phone.
