As someone who grew up in rural Appalachia in the 90's, I can say with good authority that the mullet is worse than the fedora. The trilby is awful, but a proper fedora can be worn and look good if worn in the proper context (such as with certain types of formal or semi-formal wear), unlike the mullet. And as terrible as the trilby can be on guys, women can wear a trilby and not look like a total douchebag loser. The same cannot be said for the mullet.
People may mock the fedora now (mainly due to the trilby crowd) but actual fedoras were once respectable and cool. Mullets may have been popular in the 80's and 90's, but they were always seen as a white trash haircut even at the height of popularity.
Let me put it this way: Frank Sinatra wore a fedora, Jeff Foxworthy wore a mullet. That pretty much says it all.
1 Frank Sinatra doesn't absolve every shitbag wannabe who tries to wear it to emulate him and fails on every level.
Also - Frank Sinatra would still be Frank Sinatra without a fedora. Bogie would still be Bogie without a fedora. They are the epitome of cool and it wasn't the fedora giving them that class - it was in them all along.
Also, also - women can wear mullets and not look like losers. They just look like someone who is wearing something fashionable in the 80's (big teased hair in a mullet fashion). Just because you think 80's fashions are tacky whereas 40's fashions are cool doesn't mean a thing. If Humphrey Bogart happened to reach his peak in the 80's he might have worn a mullet himself.
Fedoras are not automatically "respectable and cool". They're a fucking hat. In the time of the fedora, lots of people wore fedoras and it wasn't a reflection on their character or their social status if they wore one or not, it was just the hat du jour at the time.
The difference between them as I see it is that the mullet is unlikely to be a decision that someone makes specifically for the purpose of looking cool. Nobody goes "I want a mullet" and goes to the hairdresser and specifically asks for a mullet because they're under the impression that it'll make them look good and get chicks or whatever the fuck. At least I don't think so. But people who wear fedoras or trilbys or anything of that nature ABSOLUTELY think they look fly as fuck wearing that shit. It's such a try-hard aspect of clothing. Much like wearing a big leather duster when you live in the city (or a small town like fucking Akron, Ohio or some shit). It's a clothing choice that a child would make because they just saw the Matrix and holy shit long coats are cool azz, gotta wear one. Never realizing that they look like the biggest dipshit ever wearing it. That's the worst and most unfortunate thing about it all.
