Fighting Game Community (FGC) General - The history of FGC drama, general FGC shenanigans, and directory to more eccentric individuals and subcultures within the community

you kinda need casual shit nowadays attract casual players who don't know anything besides "Butterfly".

First of all, everything that went casual turned to shit. Now we have platformers that either hold your hand or give you "God Mode" if you die too many times. The same games that shower you with a fuck-ton of 1Ups, which is pointless and doesn't feel rewarding. Going casual is part of the problem with video games. That same "casual audience" that is into it now will quickly move on to something else in like a month or two.

In regards to DDR, when you add shit like LMFAO's "Party Rock", you're missing the point really fucking hard. The majority of songs from the DDR games were shit nobody outside of japan ever heard. It was basically advertisement in itself and it worked because the songs were not only familiar covers, but brand new tunes that sounded great. Because of DDR, you had a huge following for Captain Jack, whom before DDR nobody knew who the fuck he was. DDR was pretty much an escape from the crap the music industry would blast on the radio... a breath of fresh air. DDR did it's job right bringing in new players and fans all on its own without needing a crutch from what was "in" and "mainstream" at the time.

This is coming from someone who has played the home versions more than the arcade versions. They started that licensing shit in DDRMAX, but it didn't get fucking dumb until DDR Extreme with all that Karaoke crap. If you MUST do licenses, at least do what the Ultramix series did and go for an underground label that nobody has ever heard of.

Now this fucking idiot's trying to backtrack on his apology.
EVEN THOUGH HE ADMITTED TO IT HIMSELF WHAT THE FUCK

I remember a while ago, Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian tried starting a #MeToo for gaming that didn't go anywhere because it lead to the suicide of Alec Holowka.

Are they involved this time?
No to their involvement, but it's probably the FGC going through it's own #MeToo phase. With one accusation put forth, a chain reaction occured and now a slew of them have been coming in from all over the place (some more dubious that others).

I think we reasoned it now to quarantine getting to some folks, as well as probable malice being a factor. Or, the thing actually happened (Cinnpie, for example).

If I remember correctly, Zoe Quinn also made an admission to the Five Guys scandal (or at least the Nathan Grayson one) before backpedalling and vehemently denying it, saying it was all the work of trolls.

Would this mean that he's pulling a Zoe Quinn?

He still has the vod up I think. Someone quick archive it!
this is way too big for a full 1080p archive directly uploaded to the farms, I have the raw youtube-dl mp4 file of the vod but even converting it down to 360p was a no go for file size
edit: here's an anon file link just in case anyone wants it, have a feeling he won't nuke the vod though, however just in case this is good as a backup

If there's any takeaway from this beyond not raping kids or molesting strangers, it's that being "pro gamer," like "streamer" or "Youtuber," is a hobby, not a career choice. The only exceptions are the best of the best, or rather the luckiest of the luckiest, and even they are in the single digits and had enough money to burn if they failed otherwise. Look at Nairo, the Smash player who was cancelled, and how he doesn't have any advertisable job skills or education as far as anyone is aware. Now he can't do anything beyond menial labor and entry-level work, assuming he fails trying to restart his streaming career.

Your ability to push buttons good at a video game will degrade over time and, even with sponsors, you won't make enough money to have a sizeable safety net for the future. You can have it as a hobby, you can call it your "lifestyle," but for your own sake, don't bet your life on it.

People say this kind of stuff a lot, and sure your options are somewhat limited coming out of it, but I've worked with guys deep in their 30s and even into their 40s who were just starting out in the trades. 4 years of paid work and 40 weeks heavily subsidized (and often paid) school and you have a cert that will net you 6 figures no problem.

Can I just say one thing?

The fighting game genre would not be half as popular as it is if it weren't for all the sexy female characters in them, that's what kept people like me coming back to these games despite being mostly shitty at them, I dig all the eye candy.

It's absurd that fighting game tournaments would ban sexy costumes, that's like bread without butter, if that's the way it is then let it burn.

Makes sense. I used to be super hardcore, dark web-like into PiU back in 2006-2011. Andamiro wasn't super anti-piracy and plenty of people modified their cabinets to include unlicensed songs and charts (6 minute DragonForce songs with charts that make you look like a possessed sperg experiencing cardiac arrest in an attempt to build stamina vs licensed tracks for competition), but they did start being super into K-Pop and faggotry as the 10s rolled on, bringing with them plenty of troons and weirdos who played on easy charts all day and hogged the cabinets, eventually leading many of the former comp groups to slowly lose interest. Andamiro's tournaments also garnered more interest in choreographed "performance" charts in contrast to feats of coordination & rhythm like the prior decade.

Eventually my husband and I just bought custom platforms, hooked them up to a small PC, installed Stepmania and play in our basement.

It's a shame; the scene was really something I cherished in my teenage years and seeing it replaced with K-Pop fags and fat troons who think stepping on 3 notes at once is a feat reminds me of everything else IdPol-tards seize and diminish.

I think the stamina/super duper hard song community is still a lot popular than freestyle in both games. It's just I don't think either has any chances at this point in becoming a true e-sport in itself due to its cliche-ness and inaccessibility outside of arcades. And yeah...the progressives/troons, don't get me started on the rhythm game community itself, that might be a whole another discussion in itself, and why I never go to tournaments or meetups.

That might've worked back then when the Web was relatively new, Japan culture was the "in" thing, and social media wasn't a total cancer. Won't work in today's world of consume popular trendy thing. Yeah, Party Rock Anthem is laughable, but there have been waaaay worse licenses added before. And I see what the casuals play every time I take a break between sessions. Sure, the nostalgic Millenials will pick whatever Dancemania or MAX/EXTREME/SuperNOVA songs are left, but the Gen Z kids or other newcomers? Even if they end up scrolling through the whole song list which includes songs commissioned from so called "underground" non-Konami EDM artists, they always ends up picking mainstream songs, or anime songs if they're weebs. And if they didn't, it's usually because they ran out of time. There's a reason why the attract screens on machines in the US always show American songs while the ones in Japan always show weeb songs. Regardless if casuals never play it again, the fact that it gets them to spend $$ is all that matters.

Anyway, this is probably going super off-topic from FGC so I'll probably leave my rhythm game powerleveling at that.

Without a doubt. Pretty much anyone interested in watching step-rhythm games also plays them enthusiastically.
It has really pisspoor reach as a spectator e-sport when compared to CS:GO or SFV.

Disagree. You'd see more Kitanas than Scorpions and Mai Shiranuis than Iori Yagamis if that were the case.
They're eyecandy meant to draw your attention to the game, sure... but the staying power isn't strictly on the poontang.

They are eyecandy meant to draw your attention to the game, but for many the poontang is the staying power.

I'm not saying the genre wouldn't be popular at all, I'm just that it wouldn't be nearly as popular and that it's simply a inextricable part of what the genre is and for the FGC community to try to distance itself from that is shameful.

For who? No one who plays X game competitvely or with an enthusiast mindset cares about how Y character looks more than game balance and netcode.

Debatable. They tried adding sexualized/suggestive women in Counter-Strike for Asian markets, it flopped hard. Turns out players preferred the typical male (Counter)Terrorists and having every model use the same hitbox over adding women with smaller boxes and movement that disrupted gameflow.

You're correct insofar that having tits in your game isn't going to do shit for EVO attendance, but a significant portion of even the highest level of competitive FG players pick characters that they like stylistically and then learn to deal with their technical shortcomings. If that wasn't the case, GGXrd top 8 would be something like 5 Johnnys, 2 Fausts and an Elphelt. It also prevents existing competitive players from crossing over into another game. I travel a few times a year to play Gear, Blazblue, and Melty Blood, and I have zero interest in games like Arcana Heart or Them's Fightin' Herds because I find them aesthetically appalling despite both being very technically sound games.

Rubbish. The Functions vs. Functions meme exists for a reason.

When it comes to having sexy characters, do I think they affect the staying power of the FGC? Not really, as there are far more people who will just pick up a male character they think looks cool in the absence of a female character than vice versa.

However, trying to sterilise existing franchises is a mixed bag. Mortal Kombat X sold fine despite the cover-up changes to classics like Kitana and Mileena, but Dead or Alive 6 looked poised to be Dead on Arrival with how much emphasis was put on making the game less sexy early on. Other things like making players choose the alternate costumes of characters because you feel like the original design is too risque for those sweet ESPN shekels is just disingenuous censorship.
