Final Fantasy 16 - It's Dragon's Dogma 2

Or rather some people do, but Square and other companies still service the niche via smaller titles or other tentpole franchises like Dragon Quest. Does anyone know if Octopath Traveler was any good? I never got around to it.
Octopath Traveler..was a solid 7, it had 2 major issues with it that kept it from being truly great..but it was worth playing. I 100%ed it and don't regret the time I spent.

Just finished the trailer. Gonna second the combat looking Witcher-ish. The sword isn't nearly absurdly massive enough to make use of DMC animations or maneuvers, but it fits the more agile combat of Geralt perfectly.

Octopath was decent, satisfying combat, music, and some really cool NPC interactivity, but the Bravely Default Games are better in most respects. Octopath has a really repetitive format and the cool parts of the story are postgame. You can just emulate the Bravely games if you want good turn based gameplay on PC.

I wish XVI was more whimsical, FF always seemed silly to me, it’s part of the charm, even in games that were pretty serious like VI and VII you had stuff like Ultros and the Honeybee inn.

I like the return to roots setting that hasn't been a thing since FF9, however I don't expect this game to be out for another few years so I'm not going to get hyped over it.

Also, it was nice seeing characters that actually looked masculine but you're probably going to still get stuck playing as some Kpop band reject looking guy.

This series just really crashed with voice acting imo.

I think FFX is cool but there's just something they never quite recaptured again afterward, although part of that you can point to as simply moving away from turn based combat.

Anyway, on second glance this doesn't look bad though, while I still like my idea of making a game that resembles Amano's original artwork, I like how we're back to a typical fantasy world with no modern or futuristic technology (not that I dislike that but it's definitely time to go back more to it's roots)

But can we get some female party members again? I hope there's at least another fanservicey character like Cindy.

In current year gaming? Honestly I'd temper my expectations. The Twatter horde alone will screech like harpies at the mere hint of any sexy ladies.

That said, the same Square Enix also put out Y'shtola in a MILF outfit and Lyse in a scantily clad dress previously, so maybe it's just a matter of who's in charge of the project.

One thing they could at least do is incorporate the combat system from FFXII where you have the option to turn off turn-based for quicker action or vice versa. Although admittedly in FFXII all this did was pause the world while you made your choices but I think it could be more refined if done these days, but as an optional feature. Anyway, I really can't care either way as I love interested in Squeenix's garbage ages ago outside of maybe Dragon Quest, but I'm still miffed X never came overseas. I will say though that its nice that they returned to fantasy, however everything looks dull as dirt. Like a duller looking Witcher or them desperately trying to be GoT shit.

I forget who had this idea, but I remember reading in Game Informer years ago when they had an article series where famous devs would talk about what they would do if put in charge of famous franchises and the idea some guy had for FF was to have the combat look like you're watching a cutscene but every so often it will pause and you select what to do next ala turn based combat, which sounds like an interesting way to do turn based combat to me.

On a side note one of the guys they interviewed was Pete Wanat of Riddick and Scarface fame and his idea for a new Tomb Raider would be to have Lara fighting bad guys in the opening level in the nude (she's interrupted when she's about to get in the shower, you see) which is even funnier to think about today.

Japan doesn't seem to give a fuck about the Twatter horde though and it's a bit of an FF tradition to have the one sexy female character ala Tifa, Lulu, Fran and Cindy.

I like the medieval setting, hasnt been a straight up one since 9. I still wish the combat was something like 12s though.

It’s giving me FF12 vibes, which I like, but I feel like we’ve definitely seen the “crystals/misc. magical bullshit determine the fate of the nation” schtick before.

Maybe it’s because it’s early in development too, but everything looks kind of generic so far; it’s also kind of hilarious to watch them take their patented soft femboy J-pop lookin Final Fantasy face and contort into an angry scowl in those closing shots.

Plus I can already hear the wheels of the soy-fueled games journalism engine spinning up to find the best Final Fantasy related “Game of Thrones________“ pun.

All of that said though, fuck the haters, I’m into it.

Edit: Also, all the people in this thread calling FF9’s setting “medival” are vastly selling it short. FF9 is more like a more grounded fairly tale with steampunk elements and shoots for a completely different tone. FF16 looks “medival” in the sense that it wouldn’t feel out of place to see a shit-covered peasant get shoved into the dirt and have his teeth kicked in by a passing noble just because he kind of felt like it at the time.

I love Japanese takes on the European fantasy world ala Dark Souls, Berserk etc.

I wonder if he got the inspiration for that from the ending of Tomb Raider 2.

That's probably what he was referencing, Lara's mansion gets invaded by mercenaries while she's just about to step into the shower, she reaches for a towel... only to pull out twin Mac 10 Uzis from underneath it and proceed to shoot bad guys while in the nude and ignoring the towel.

Maybe there was a time in which Lara could have been topless but fully nude seems pretty far fetched.

I do think if Square Enix ever publishes another Tomb Raider though they should start off with Lara in lingerie, not quite as daring as nudity but that'd still be a great way to thumb their noses at SJWs.

I do think it'd be kind of cool if they immediately followed up the VII remake with a crypto-remake of the first game considering VII was the first major game that broke from the medieval D&D-esque fantasy mold (although VI had some steampunk elements)
Trend started in VI because Sakaguchi thought about a concept of technology evolving with magic.

I find this sentiment funny because a twist in FF1 was that the flying "castle" was some kind of space colony. But I get you, I don't mind the techno fantasy the modern titles became but it's nice to scale back to swords and sorcery with robots once in a while.

I don't like ARPGs at all, I fucking hated boyband simulator and final fantasy has been dead to me for ages. X was the last good one. They just keep making great gramfix but the fucking gameplay is braindead, give me some meat you guys fucking invented the materia system and the sphere grid come the fuck on.
