Final Fantasy VI - Cause I am re-playing it and feel like talking about it.

Well guys... This week is Final Fantasy's 30 years jubelium, so I am celebrating by playing one of my all time favourite games. "Final Fantasy VI."

man this game, I nearly forgot how great it actually is.

I mean, so many colourful characters, all these changing enviroments all across the place. You go from a ice cavering, to a ghost train, to an opera to an mecha imperial base. There are so much great stuff and great set pieces.
And the individual character stories are fun to, also never forget the sheer charm and humour.

It makes me sad because well... While I heard many good things about the new FF game, Final Fantasy XV... I just muster up the energy to buy it and play it.

That game just looks so gosh darn gray and boring! Everyone wears black, the only pictures I have seen from it is of long landscapes of boring brown... How come the 36-bit game is so much more visually interesting than the new modern PS4 game?!?!? ..... sigh.

Also what madman was it who said. "Guys, I know we only have bit music to work with, but we should totally make an opera inside of this game." And they did... and not just one song, a whole little play with multiple melodies and a little story... and it's actually good.... What madman made that happen?

I'm sure this thread will not deteriorate into autistic sperging.:optimistic:

FF VI is perhaps my all time favorite FF. Though it's not without it's share of faults, like that some characters didn't get much development (Relm, Gau, Mog) or somethings were poorly translated. Not to mention that towards the end some characters wind up just plain better than others (poor Cyan) or that Locke's Steal command doesn't get too much use after a while...

What version of FF VI are you playing?

Heh we'll see. If all the etlistis comes and screams. "The classics were better!" "No VII is the only real FF game." "NO! Only Heavensword!" "That's an MMO so it's not a real FF game." .... and let the fighting ensue <_<

Meh, the games are just different it's a matter of taste.

Well yeah, they try to balance it but obviously some characters will shine better than others. And since Gay is optional, I guess they didn't put so much empathise on him.

All though, I like to think the game is implying that a sort of father-son relationship develops between him and Cyan as the game goes on.
You know. Gau lost his father, Cyan lost his son and wife. It makes sense damn you! Inside of my head those two settled down after the end of the game and Cyan raised Gau as his own son! That's my reality damn you.

But yeah, if that is the intention or not, it could have been spelled out better. I mean, we spend a TON of time veryfing that Locke has a thing for Celes and virsa versa, so the other relations could have used a little more work.

But after I played the remake of Dragon Quest VIII, it really made me appreciate getting the thieve early on.

Because in the DQ VIII remake, you get to play two new characters whom weren't available in the original game and... ones is pretty much just a thieve and the other a monster tamer.

And those would have been great to get early in the game for farming and grinding, but you get them so damn late! And they are NOT good at the final stages, they are kind of terrible in harsh fights. It sucks -_-;

Oh man, I am always spamming Lockes thief command so badly, or well, his "Captive." command, basically I just equip him with a throw weapon, put him in the backrow and spam the shit out of "Captive." so much money I am saving.

And af

"Captive." command,
So an unhacked SNES version.

There really is no definitive version of FF6, but a hacked SNES version, with better translation and bug fixes, or the GBA version with the sound mod for original music plus one of the CD tracks for the Opera House, are probably the best IMO. Steam version can rot in hell unless someone can fix those sprites and the crazy filter the game runs on.

Not to sound like a snob, but I think the GBA version is considered the best. Though yeah, it doesn't have the same sound quality as an SNES.

Hehe, I am actually playing on the PS3.

There are ports available for all the classic FF games on the PS web store for the PS3.

So it's actually the release that was made for the PS1. Remember that? All the way back then, there was a release for the PS1 of the game. with pretty good sound and image and some fixed translations as well as a full 3D title screen. And that's the version that has been ported to the Ps3 via the play store. Only available pr online purchase of course.

It's actually really cheap and right now it's half price because of the anniversary.

I remember when I got this game. I'll spare you the usual text dump and get to the fun part: When I tried to get this game, it was about a year after it had released and it was available fucking nowhere. No used game seller had it, and it was too old to be found on new game racks. Eventually, one afternoon, I called fucking every place that sold video games within driving distance and found one copy left at a Toys "R" Us in a town like 40 miles away. The following morning, I had my prize.

You'll probably call me a young little whipper snapper. My first game consol was a N64 when I was a kid and then later a PS2.

Dragon Quest VIII is the game that actually introduced me to the J-RPG genre and I kind of just worked my way backwards from there. So my first version of FF VI, was in fact the PS1 release played on a PS2.

And i just kind of stumbled across it back then lol, I had no clue what it even was but you know. "Hey Final Fantasy! So it's probably like that game with the little black mage called Vivi right?!"

Well... sort of. Still a great game though XD

Hardly. Everyone gets into their video games their own way. Whether you started with an Atari 2600, or an N64, it's all good.

Like an autistic kid at a school I used to work for liked to say: "The only thing cooler than video games to a kid who loves video games is an adult who loves those same games."

Wait, wasn't it Mug in the unhacked SNES versions?

Well doesn't matter what age the person is, just always awesome to find someone whom likes the same game you do ^^

But man, sometimes I do feel old. I just remember I was at this con like, one or two years ago. Somewhere there was a NES standing out, connected to a little TV and Super Mario 3 was in the machine.

Then there was this guy, I think he must have been around 16 years old, it was not a little kid, definetely a teen.
He was looking at this thing with the deepest wonder, he just stood there. And then as I talked to him, yeah, turned out he had never ever, in his life, seens a NES before...

That... that kind of blew my mind. I mean, the first consol I owned was a N64, but I had played NES games when visiting other people. This teen though, never seen one of those. Just... Damn o_O

But I really love how enthusiastic he was about it and totally wanted to play, he actually really liked it. so that was awesome lol XD

Maybe there is something about kids liking adults whom like the same games though, there was this kid, living on the same street as my parentss. At the party where everyone from the street just kind of comes and eat, the kid found out I liked the same games he did and suddenly wanted to come visit me... which I... well... I didn't know how to deal with that.
I mean, i'm a adult woman. I don't think I should invite small boys into my appartment, even if it just is to play video games. I must admit I kind of freaked out.

PS1 version is laggier than GBA version. And man those load times.

DQ8 is my favorite. Best in the series IMO

When Rooster Teeth did thier video game competition a few years back one of the dudes asked if Mario Bros had a run button. That hurt my soul.

SNES rom on a Vita is the best imo. Haven't played the game in a while though. Makes you wonder why they never gave it the chibi remake the other 2 did on the 3DS.

Well, I never even had a GBA, so I really don't know. I had a gameboy colour ones, and then skipped straight ahead to the DS. Now I own a NEW3DS.
So i'll just take your word for it, I like this version though. Perhaps it's just my comfort personality, but I quite like being able to play on my television.
I know, i'm not a real gamer, I don't really like keyboard gaming, I prefer a consol and a controller by far. But again, I think it's a matter of taste.
That's just me, I suck at keyboards so controls it is, and even nicer being able to put it on the tely.
But man, I always had this dream that they would bother to make a full remake of the game, just to see some of these settings in glorious 3D. And... Dude, that opera scene? With a true life orchestre in a good singer singing it.
I know I know, there are versions. There's the "Final Fantasy tour." that has made it come true, but within the game man! With all the visuals. Sigh... Probably wont ever happen though, for some reason only the 3D games are worth re-making :C

Awww! DQ 8 will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart for being the first.
Of course I also recently played through the 3DS remake that came out recently, oh gosh my childhood, it was like my heart grew three seizes when I held that game in my hands.
Though I do think other DQ titles are really good to and even under appreciated. For instance, I really freaking adore. "Realms of revelation." I think it's the best one of the 36 bit era DQ games... and I seem to be alone in that as everyone else seems to think. "Hand of the heavenly bride." and "Chapters of the chosen." are better.
And well, it's a question of openion. But come on! the concept behind Realms of revelation is so freaking cool! You travel between the dream world and the real world.
And you actually don't start off in the real world, you start off in the dream world and eventually find out you are nothing but another persons dream, a person whom has been put to sleep due to a curse. That's so cool.
And of course seeing how the real world affects the dream world and virsa versa, also the logic behind the dream world is of course different than the real world. It's so damn cool I really love it.
And man... The big DQ 11 game that is supposed to come out in Japan this year. Please oh please have a western release, I beg of thee!

HAHA lol.
Oh the young naive fools XD

Sorry for the long post lol, i'm a enthusiast X)

We repeat this once or twice, and it's about as interesting as you ___.png

Actually in my experience, the loading times are way cut on better hardware. I remember my friend had that game loaded on a flashcart and it ran beautifully. As I recall, it also had a fleshed-out bestiary, with actual fluff about the individual enemies.

Yeah, but it still had the SNES bugs in it. Remember the Sketch bug?

I am torn between FF IV and VI being favourites of mine. FF VI's intro was still the best tome IMO.

Steam version can rot in hell unless someone can fix those sprites and the crazy filter the game runs on.

The filter was fixed with a simple mod but a project to fix the sprites ran out of "steam" with the best available alternative being a mod that removes some of the weird guts the male characters have.
