A little late for this I know, but you can steal a Debilitator from one of the boss' parts (Edit 1: It's Missile Bay). Same with the Crane (Edit 2: It's the right one) bosses after the Magitech factory. Though that one from what I remember is more luck than anything else; most of the time you get aI’m in the process of playing 6 for the first time, have been neglecting it recently but I think I’m nearing the part where Kefka destroys the world. From what I hear most of your party members are OP by this point, so I assume battle formation doesn’t matter for the latter half of the game?
Don’t really have any complaints; the only boss I struggled with was the stupid plane one when you’re free-falling.
It's not too bad an idea to keep casters and characters with poorer armor in the back because...
I wouldn't say OP, as most of the monsters on the Floating Continent are pretty capable of messing you up fast, especially Brainpans (the floating heads). A couple casts of Blowfish/1000 Needles and your party isn't looking too good. They can also paralyze you and cast Lv.3 Muddle and Lv.4 Flare, both of which can lead to a party wipe. Dragons can cast Revenge which hits for the total amount of HP they have missing, and their Tail can hit for a couple thousand. You can steal Genji Gloves from them though so if for whatever reason you don't have one or two now's your chance. Behemoths are just plain nasty and will counter hit every physical attack and they pack a wallop.
Oh, one last thing, if you're going for a 100% bestiary don't forget to head to Triangle Island to fight an Intangir (you remember the spell 'Meteo'? They cast it) and the forest on the west-side of the Veldt. IIRC there's a gray Bomb enemy that only appears there called 'Grenade' that shows up in the old-school circle formation.
