Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

Wuk Lamat is the Poochie of FFXIV.
It's funny you say that. Because when I was describing the pacing of the events between entering the fourth zone and leaving for the fifth zone to someone, I literally described it as "When are we going to get to the fireworks factory!?"

Lmao, shitpost XIV of all things was one of the first to seethe
It’s absolutely bizarre seeing shitpostxiv being so defensive about this EP and Wuk Lamat and genuinely caring about what people outside the community say about it when they spent years not holding back on being critical of the game as a whole alongside criticizing the msq and it’s characters. Shitpostxiv used to pride itself in allowing people to criticize the game in ways that would get them dogpiled and harassed in other XIV communities. Those threads you linked to feel more like something you’d see on the main sub than shitpostxiv. I take it the old guard who used to spend all their time griping about a game while being unable to quit due to Stockholm syndrome/sunk cost fallacy finally managed to leave. I could be remembering wrong but in the old days of the sub I faintly recall Shitpostxiv being very anti sjw and there was a lot of anti LGBT sentiment aimed at the community.

Going to put my sappy emotional autism behind a spoiler with regards to my current relationship with the game and community. I apologize in advance for it, just feeling very emotional lately over dumb things.
As for the game itself I checked out right before EW due to being severely burnt out by the gameplay loop. Also being around all the bitterness and doomerism surrounding the msq plot of the EP in the general community didn’t help even though the grievances are valid and I could understand where the community is coming from. I feel dumb and regret letting others dictate my enjoyment of the game and should have just avoided all discussion of the EP when it came out on both here and everywhere else but that’s all on me and it is what it is.

As someone who's thoughts on the msq in terms of quality can be summed up as 'mixed bag', I have to say that there are a lot of parralels to Stormblood.

Two expacs worth of story crammed into one expac
Nominal main/original one is the less interesting of the two
Both main plots feature a female deuteragonist taking up a leadership position on what can charitably be called 'shaky grounds'.

I think this expac really just needed one thing; to be split in half. One expac covers the southern continent, another the north.

It's kinda wild, because it really feels like the southern continent's contents cover basically everything you need for an expac on their own. The most likely tribes - Moblin, Mamool Ja and Yok Huy - are all on the southern continent, and the 7 challenges would have faired a lot better if each had a whole zone for it, rather than some of them being "go to the city and come back with that guy who's really overstaying his welcome by this point". The plot even largely wraps up it's original goal by the end of the L95 quests, to the point that Shaaloani is basically just dicking around for a zone playing rootin' tootin' sheriff.

What's wild about this, to me, is that there's a pretty good way to split these all up already. THere's three perfect candidates for trials - Valigarmanda, Bakool Ja's spirit or whatever, and Zoraal Ja. I'm pretty sure you even have enough allies with you for Bakool Ja's spirit to be a trial, so I don't know why it was skipped. And it would have been so good to have some of the other candidates as dungeon bosses or something. The game really let me down on letting me actually have a fight with Thancred and Urianger.

Really, the whole expac did Koana dirty. LAd's supposedly equal with Wuk, but he gets so sidelined it's painful. I wanted at least one dungeon with Koana's team instead of Wuk's. At the very least, if they'd given him another scion as an ally (maybe split the twins) then he'd feel more fairly balanced with us. Could have given him Y'shtola with barely a second thought, she both makes snese as someone he'd want to grab, and someone who compliments and corrects his mindset. Or split the twins between the two.

Conversely, the second half also would have benefited from being it's own zone. Namikka literally only exists to die, it would have been more impactful if we did some questing with her as a real party member before finding her all Old in the dome. And similarly, that could have done with it's own arc too. Cahcuia was much better because she was basically with us for a whole zone as a mission control.

And that way, you have the whole southern continent to dedicate to expanding on the zones, and really giving them their own identity. And when it comes time to the northern content, you have more than a single zone to work with for your western theming or whatever you want to do.

With that said, contrary to most opinions here, I actually really enjoyed the last zone. I was so thrown off by it's discovery, and the whole thing just had this... really melancholy air to it. The one thing I will say I did not like, though, is that the volcano was absolutely torturous to traverse on foot, and they were way too stingy with letting you jump down.

EW had this going on too, and also like EW Dawntrail doesn't have any postpatch plot hooks. Maybe this is just how they do things now.

Makes me wonder what the hell development even looks like and if they're plotting stuff in advance or if they just wing it.

To be honest, the endless complaining is a bit confusing for me (edit to clarify this thread has the most quality of critiques posted than anywhere else so I don't mean here). I get that liking something is subjective but it's starting to feel like the critics are becoming more suffocating than the pozitivity carebears. I have my gripes, but perhaps out of some latent autism I cried quite a bit, there was nary a snoozefest of an exposition dump or dealing with diplomats like Endwalker had - sometimes it feels like the story is struggling to get to the good bits but it's constrained by the rigid structure every story needs to have (dungeon only every 2 levels, no trial for a loooong stretch between 95 and 99, the need for each zone to have a certain number of quests). I definitely felt the Stormblood parallels as well, especially the music.

It's a 7/10 from me, docking two points for the huge tone shift and depriving us of both halves as a consequence, and one for the slow start Erenville has a character had. Maybe I'm just forgetting, but he didn't seem that dead inside in Endwalker.

It's both, they winged it for Heavensward and good chunk of Stormblood, then decided to plot out Shadowbringers and Endwalker. I recall a couple of Yoshi-p interviews where he said that shortly after the launch of the current expansion he and the writers develop the story for the next one because the team that works on the CGI trailers takes forever and they need all the key details ASAP.

i started browsing it around the time EW dropped and all i could think is that they really had that infamous "reddit seethe" where they try to act like they're above something (i.e the general XIV community) but when a pet issue happens you will get a bunch of updoots supporting the current thing and disparaging anyone who doesnt kow tow to that

I honestly just had too much of it by the mid point and started speed reading/cutscene skipping. As far as I can tell the 2nd half is just Amarout and Emet Selch again, except this time its Wuk's story and we're a background npc
It honestly does feel like a ripoff of shadowbringers, except they forgot all the things that made shadowbringers interesting.

So fun fact: some other autist managed to compile the number of words each character speaks in Dawntrail and:

Spoiler for image size

Spleene being second by a long shot isn't helping either I don't think.

Gulool Ja Ja and Cahciua with just around 20% of the dialogue Rug Lamat has manage to be ten times the characters she is, good lord.

I am willing to bet my entire account they'll set Wuk Lamat up to be a Scion by the end of this expansion life cycle
I bet they would have if her reception was all positive. If they do it after the reception she has gotten so far, then Square has gone crazy.

With the backlash they got?
Not so sure about it.
With some proper direction, I feel that she could be better. She's written serviceably but they would need to do some serious progression on their part. The VA also needs some work, it's not Chills bad but man it wouldn't kill to have more emotion where it counts.
