Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
>The Warrior of Light is indeed still the main hero of FFXIV but is just in a supporter role in Dawntrail
The WoL has only actually been the main hero in Shadowbringers, Heavensward, and parts of Stormblood.
In ARR you're treated like shit even after you tell Gaius to pound sand, and in Endwalker you're either treated like the scions' attack dog or are just the vessel through which the literal power of friendship is flowing through. Elpis? The game makes it clear that nothing you do actually matters there because of a stable time loop.
>He asks fans to please not make any personal attacks to Wuk Lamat's voice actress(es) or localization team members; they are just doing their best to deliver a great product
>actress
nah he's said he's fine with it by calling for harassment for bridget's VA
>The slow pacing of Dawntrail is due to having to learn about new environments and cultures, so it was necessary but did indeed make the first half feel very slow
No, the slow pacing is because you decided to make the trial storyline the MSQ storyline in Endwalker so you had to dump everything onto us at once. Oh wait, Shadowbringers didn't have this issue for an even more exotic location.
(Dawntrail is unique in that information about what happens was only shared in the .55/56 patch. Every other expansion has had hints leading up from the .4 or .5 patch, and 2.55 is the single largest stretch of MSQ in any post-patch.)
>He believes those who did not warm up to Wuk Lamat probably feel this way because she was introduced in a negative light with a complex compared to her siblings, which he thinks players might have found frustrating
Insert image showing that over half of the voiced lines and over 59% of the objectives relate to her in the MSQ.

He knows the problem, but doesn't want to admit it.
It would be PR suicide to single out troon tiger anyway. And remember, SEnix never admitted that Lyse was a problem, but chose to sideline her anyway.

I'd watch what the team does post 7.2, rather than stick by his words.

And if you feel bad about Kate being harassed reminder that she thinks minors should be exposed to nudity and sexual acts at pride events.

I am in Maduin, Dynamis datacenter which would coincide with a dead DC and deader server, if you're there you could, otherwise thank you for offering; I can toss one of the Limsa wastes of space some gil to invite 3 alts I'll prep in advance.
Awesome coincidence. Yeah, we're on Maduin. I'll send you my name when I'm able to get on in a bit; I don't want to dox our characters openly on here since FFXIV has a sizeable number of angry troons that might try to fuck with my account.

Awesome coincidence.
I recommend both going to an obscure location (e.g. the Crystal Tower, the end of Mourn in the Forelands) or randomass housing district area to first meet up. My shell FC's spot is a Large in the Goblet's Subdivision on a world on Chaos, and i've only seen someone take a look at it once.

Hey @ChromaQuack just realized I can't DM you on here. If you want to shoot me one, I should be online for a few hours! If not, we can figure it out tomorrow. Either way let me know if you still need help getting your FC setup! I know the two of us had a fucking awful time trying to convince two randoms to help us with ours.

Another Yoshida interview (aka another episode of Yoshida flailing and completely missing the point of why people hated Dawntrail) just dropped:

This interview feels like it was given by the most bluest of the blue hairs, just based on the question lines and the way they were structuring it. I'm glad Yoshi P didn't just chalk it up to 'the chuds' or whatever and acknowledged that there is valid criticism out there.
>The Warrior of Light is indeed still the main hero of FFXIV but is just in a supporter role in Dawntrail

>He asks fans to please not make any personal attacks to Wuk Lamat's voice actress(es) or localization team members; they are just doing their best to deliver a great product

This is childish of me, but only if Wuk Lamat's VA doesn't make any personal attacks.

>The slow pacing of Dawntrail is due to having to learn about new environments and cultures, so it was necessary but did indeed make the first half feel very slow
One thing he also said that you didn't include is that WL is a 'very Japanese' character.

Which is strange, because the Japanese aren't fond of trooncat, either, largely because she's seen as boorish and un-Japanese. Maybe he meant in terms of like a stock character, but, ehhhhhh.

I also disagree wholeheartedly that you have to have slow pacing in order to learn about new environments and cultures. Shadowbringers was exactly that and it flowed just fine, even as we were learning about shit as we progressed through the MSQ. I'm sick of this 'respecting cultures' excuse that keeps getting trotted out here. You can have engaging gameplay that doesn't move at a glacial pace while also incorporating/introducing new cultures and ideas. Especially if your 'deep' exploration of these cultures is 'LOL ALPACAS, *holds up spork*' nonsense.

>He believes those who did not warm up to Wuk Lamat probably feel this way because she was introduced in a negative light with a complex compared to her siblings, which he thinks players might have found frustrating

It's a bad character who is grossly overexposed compounded by shite writing. There's no reprieve and you're along for the ride no matter what, with the added bonus of yet another world-ending threat being introduced and two popular characters being sidelined.

Why does no one ask Yoshi P about Erenville and Krile getting put on the sidelines?

>He understands the negative reaction to Dawntrail's slow pacing and Wuk Lamat's character and says this is something the team will need to improve on moving forward, so they will take all this feedback into account.

Thoughts?

I honestly think he's being diplomatic here because he's just as liable for Dawntrail's shitty reception as the underlings working beneath him are, so it makes sense to be diplomatic and non-committal with his answers. Plus, it's just generally unprofessional to throw your team under the bus because of some bad press.

I think that he's had more of a time to digest the full game and see the feedback coming out and the fact that he's acknowledged that there are significant issues (and it's not just the evil TERFs trying to genocide the heckin' wholesome culture respecter Wuk Lamat or whatever) is important.

I just find it bizarre some of the arguments he's bringing up or making.

The WoL isn't the focus. Okay, sure, but maybe you could acknowledge that this way of attempting things didn't quite work and that the dev team are looking at different ways, moving forward.

We're introducing new cultures and that's why it's so slow. No, it was a conscious decision to structure things the way that they did. It's molasses in January levels of slow because that was the intention, it wasn't a byproduct of the subject matter and an inescapable conclusion.

I don't think it's helped with people who are desperately trying to salvage trooncat (like I feel whoever did this interview was) asking the questions they are asking.

I fucking hate games journalists because they rarely ask anything thought provoking or interesting. Preach's interview with Yoshi P was actually interesting because it went beyond 'are we going to see Blitzball?!??!'-tier questions and talked about broader game design shit.

Instead of asking 'are you aware people dislike Wuk Lamat?' ask shit like 'What lessons have you learnt from Dawntrail in terms of narrative design?', or 'How much exploration is the team doing on different ways of conveying the story?'

We're introducing new cultures and that's why it's so slow.
What cultures? Tural has none, they're caricatures and the entire story is like "lol what if the unification wars but in south america with lizard jesus daimyo"

I don't find his non-comital answers strange, I find the fact that he choses to use the shittiest part of dawntrail as points of contention strange, I would rather hear cope about how the awful pacing was an experimental thing because they were supposed to introduce a "complex character in a single expansion" (even if WL is as complex as a tardigrade) than culture cope.

It wasn't just the story team, the music is the worst it's been too, the graphic update was an overhyped flop; these answers feel like grasping at straws and he would have been much better off talking about the strong points of dawntrail, which for as much of a disaster as it is, it does have some.

I'm just going off what was said in the interview. I agree it's bordering on parody.

Although to be fair Tural does seem to be drawing some influence from the Incas, in that there were 4 cultures unified under that civilization

>The Warrior of Light is indeed still the main hero of FFXIV but is just in a supporter role in Dawntrail
I don't mind being in a supportive role. Except when you force me to support a character that I don't like and never warm up to.
>He asks fans to please not make any personal attacks to Wuk Lamat's voice actress(es) or localization team members; they are just doing their best to deliver a great product
Kind of hard to do when the VA himself is a bad person and actively goes out to start fights with others. Contrary to what most people think, most people hate Sena and do not respect him because he's piece of shit, not because he's a troon.
>The slow pacing of Dawntrail is due to having to learn about new environments and cultures, so it was necessary but did indeed make the first half feel very slow
Learning about new cultures and environments can be fun and engaging when done correctly. Not when it's sloppily thrown together to make things conveniently revolve around a character no one likes.
>He believes those who did not warm up to Wuk Lamat probably feel this way because she was introduced in a negative light with a complex compared to her siblings, which he thinks players might have found frustrating
That's part of the reason why, but not the main reason. There's nothing wrong with a character being flawed at the start and then working to improve themselves. The problem with Wuk is that her arc resolves at a break neck speed and then she undergoes a metamorphosis into a mary sue that's shoved down our throats at every conceivable opportunity because the writers were so desperate for us to like her. We needed a break from her and the small one we got wasn't nearly enough. It's easier to appreciate something when it's not being flung at us every 2 seconds.
>He understands the negative reaction to Dawntrail's slow pacing and Wuk Lamat's character and says this is something the team will need to improve on moving forward, so they will take all this feedback into account.
Does he? I hope so. He can start by replacing those awful writers and making it clear that Wuk should focus on her duties as Dawnservant instead of trying to play adventurer with us and leaving her twink brother to babysit Tural. She already dragged us all over to win the throne so I'll be annoyed if she's everywhere except there.

He knows the problem, but doesn't want to admit it.
I’m not sure if he’s just doing it for PR or he’s actually defending the cretin. Either way, it only ever leads to problems. Just dump the creature, maybe have the trannny jannies boycott for a day or two, and then they’ll eventually come crawling back. This is top tier damage control.

(Honestly, it looks like Sena is gonna be Yoshi P’s own Chris Tyson. Get rid of him fast.)

On the contrary, I would prefer they defend him right up until the allegations come out. Everyone involved will get dropped so fast your head will spin, and every choice for English VAs and studios will be under a microscope for the rest of the game's life. Might even get Koji back in the captain's chair until a suitable replacement is found.

Oh I think it would be great. Number one is it’s the easiest way to get rid of that cunt, and two is that yeah, they’ll have to be a lot more careful in the future.

When will these companies learn that hiring leftists is a horrible idea. Especially if you’re a Japanese company.

The designers operated under the assumption that the more they shoved trooncat in your face the more you'd like her. Except, no, everyone got annoyed instead.

I can virtually guarantee you that YoshiP has next-to-no idea who Sena Bryer is. And Bryer isn't really why the expansion has been so poorly-received, but rather is just a part of it. People form this weird parasocial relationship with the writing team - Yoshi and Ishikawa in particular - and they forget that it's still, ultimately, a grinding corporate business. Coworkers in the same office might get along and even be friends, but I can't imagine that most of the US localization team is on their radar any more than the DE or FR ones are. And naturally: you're still a business. If it becomes clear that Hiroi and Kate are the two biggest loci of failure, you're not going to see them nailed to a cross. You might see someone let something slip in an interview, and otherwise you'll just see them quietly shuffled off - Kate, of course, being more expendable than Hiroi, as the defining characteristic of Japenese corporate structure is "calcification."

At the same time, I think that Yoshi might be onto something with the "Wuk isn't confident" angle. I should preface this by saying that, while I still would have despised the story, a lot of people like Naruto. And if Wuk was just Naruto, it would've been less offensive than the bizarre thing that exists in the story. One of the biggest issues is that Wuk has no real explanation for why she wants to be the leader, and she demonstrates none of the qualities that are important to see in a leader. Her sum-total motivation is that she likes peace, even though she's never known war. She's never seen being in charge of anything or working with other people to achieve an end, and it's suggested that our tagging-along-adventure is the very first time she's interacted as an adult with most of the continent's cultures.

It's a complete misfire for the story, which should absolutely have been identified early on in the concepting phase. Imagine this instead: Wuk spends most of her time abroad, not unlike Koanna. But whereas Koanna centralizes his focus on the world in the cosmopolitan Sharlayan, Wuk travels from place to place, serving in mercenary outfits and even forming her own band - so she's familiar with the broader war with Garlemald and its aftermath, both for the wider-world and for Garlemald itself. She could enlist the WoL and return to Tural not just with him, but with the whole of the mercenary outfit - which, of course, could replace the Scions' role as exposition-dispensers. Wuk has a much more deep cause for why she cares about peace - she has seen what war does to the rest of the world - and she could be insistent that she can fix some of Tural's stagnant issues with the collective wisdom of her wide coterie of mercenaries.

Koanna could contrast here as someone who believes more in book-smarts than in cultures themselves, and Joraal-Ja could be a more compelling antagonist because he feels that the other two 'abandoned' Tural - and that militaristic expansion simply makes sense, given the vulnerable state of the rest of the world. Bakool JaJa could instead of being the absolute clusterfuck of a character he is be the isolationist candidate, who suggests that Tural's future lies not in greater rapprochement with the wider world, but instead on emulating Hingashi and closing itself off to focus on its own internal issues.

In this way, you have room for Wuk to be an aggressive and assertive character that still meaningfully contrasts with Koanna - but also, importantly, has a lot more agency. While Wuk still gets far too much screentime, if Wuk felt more like an actual character who contributed to things, it would be far more tolerable. One of the big complaints of the story is that the WoL is irrelevant to it: you aren't an advisor or a confidant so much as hired muscle that stands around nodding. Yet if Wuk was a character that actually made forward steps and was impetuous and impulsive, the WoL could then actually serve as an advisor: Wuk insists on charging forward, quickly gets in over her head, and then turns to her companions for advice.
Instead, Wuk spends most of the story as a clueless, passive character: she does nothing, has no real motivations, insists on nothing, and doesn't grow. She is pulled through the trial by GJJ and doesn't really do anything on her own initiative in the Alexandria arc, instead mostly being a background detail. Changing this, to make her into a more active character with actual thoughts and emotions, would have gone a long way.

Politics also really has nothing to do with why this game's reception is so poor. Most of the people bitching about DT have no idea what Bryer thinks about anything, who Kate is, and I assure you no-one in JP is really complaining about either of those two. Other than rubber bullets, my issue with the localization is less that there's overt messaging that feels clearly-inserted and more that it's dry and clumsy in comparison to every other expansion - but then, it was dry in EW postgame as well, so it could also just be that Hiroi's prose is flat.

Apparently Yoshi thinks it's okay for Sena to not only attack the playebase of his game and call them racists for not liking a song, but also attack other voice actors in the industry and say he'd commit violence against them if they're cis and playing a trans character. But don't you dare criticize the tranny for being objectively shit at his job! That's harassment!

"Most of the people bitching about DT have no idea what Bryer thinks about anything, who Kate is, and I assure you no-one in JP is really complaining about either of those two. "

This is false, JP is very much aware, about Sena, about Kate, and Sweey Baby Inc, all of it, and are very much outraged:
