Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

This is false, JP is very much aware, about Sena, about Kate, and Sweey Baby Inc, all of it, and are very much outraged:
Let's walk through this for a moment. The JP playerbase, who has just about zero reason to so much as look at the EN localization... is mad about the EN voice actor for WL and the lead localizer? That's why they dislike Dawntrail? So much that Yoshi, who notoriously (and correctly) doesn't pay attention to the EN playerbase had to acknowledge that the game has been poorly received? And like - that's not something you acknowledge casually for a current product, lol

Sure, you can find a few people oogling the EN-shitshow on 2ch, but think about it for a second: where does the sweetbaby stuff even come from? If Bryer wasn't WL, does the Sweetbaby thing even get brought up?

I think Yoshi's line about not harassing the localization staff / voice actors piqued some interest from their end, since I don't think anyone had an issue with the JP VAs. Which also suggests that the amount of people frustrated with them, again primarily from the EN world, is so big that even the big cheese can't ignore it. And we're like, what, two months out from the game's release? It's not going away

But I've never really understood this obsession with these people, nor the idea of crusading against them. Bryer is an unprofessional twat digging his own grave, but that's really got nothing to do with why DT's story content is awful. Rather, his contribution was that he's clearly a nepo hire and delivered one of the worst vocal performances I've ever heard, which does remind me to dig into the audio files tonight.

I don't understand his take about Wuk being "japanese" either. Because her being a trite shounen trope type of character isn't a good enough reason to label something as "japanese".
She's more like a main character you'd see from some wokie game like their failed abortion of an action game. What was it? Forspoken? Forsworn? I dunno. But the main character in that game was dogwater too.
Or like Rei from the garbage Starwars movies.
She's a mary sue that didn't work to earn anything she had and shot to the top by standing on the backs of others with her extremely shallow motivation of "peace and happiness"
Someone who hasn't even known a fraction of hardship other characters have had jabbering on about idealistic bullshit.

EDIT: I don't agree with her being a Mary Sue. The issue with Wuk Trooncat is that she's inconsistently written and is just a flat, dull character.

There's nothing wrong with her being an archetype or a type of stock character, it's a good way to convey shit to the (typically braindead) audience. But like our AIIIIIIIIIIDS enthusiast mentioned with Naruto, it comes down with making a character likeable.

People like underdogs and people like easygoing, fun characters even if they're overpowered (I'm thinking like Goku.) Wuk's gravest sin is she's fucking boring and it's made worse because we cannot fucking escape her.

If Bryer wasn't WL, does the Sweetbaby thing even get brought up?

I don't know how much of the culture war shit is a 'thing' in Japan, but I think it'd come up regardless as there were references to them working with 'cultural consultants' (or something like that, I can't remember the exact phrasing) for Dawntrail. I do think you're right that holding up fucking 2chan as proof that the larger JP fanbase is invested in the EN localization shit is tenuous. The more telling/important detail is that JP are simply not happy with the story they got and it's really hard for Yoshi P to dance around that.

Which, I don't know. To me, the details that come from the cultures that have been borrowed from/used as inspiration are incredibly shallow.

Granted, this is nothing new for JP devs (see: Rufus from Street Fighter 4), but, and I apologise for banging this drum again, I do find all of Tural to be a huge swing and a miss given how SE usually does a great job at creating a living, breathing world.

I think Yoshi's line about not harassing the localization staff / voice actors piqued some interest from their end, since I don't think anyone had an issue with the JP VAs.

Keep in mind Yoshida only made that statement because he was basically forced to say something.

In a German interview.

Where he was being asked about the English localization. You have a chance to talk to the top brass and this retard (whoever it was) opted to spend it bitching about a troon. Fuck off.

I think you're right that outside of a few team leads on the EN localization side, he doesn't know who most of these fucks are. Yeah, he maybe might have patched in during some of the recording sessions (doubtful as I don't think he'd really be able to provide any meaningful feedback) but the way that Sena has not been utilized in the marketing of the game (read: Square has literally done nothing with him) makes me think they really don't give a shit.

The copium take is that Yoshi-P is saying that because they're planning on shitcanning him and don't want 'harassment' used as an excuse, but that requires more rainbows than what's contained in San Francisco during the month of June.

Such trash.

In a German interview.
Fucking germans and their obsession with being literal - I thought it was a JP site because I just saw "jpgames" and glossed over the .de.
I can actually read the damn interview and see what's lost in the translation.
'cultural consultants'
They did say this, and I believe that SBI was somehow actively linked to SE at some point or another... but, again: it's a racket. These consultancy firms make connections with people who live in isolated bubbles (ask anyone who's worked in tech or entertainment, and then consider what happens in tech-entertainment) that tell them there will be tons of outrage and blah blah blah unless you have us come on and take a look... and so the companies pay their protection money. And the cultural consultants go "yep, the latin world is just tacos, mezcal, and white people doing embarrassing accents" and rubber-stamp it.

But all that has nothing-much to do with how lackluster-to-awful DT is, particularly since I'm assuming JP did everything in one studio.
Rufus from Street Fighter 4)
You may not like it, but that's what peak America looks like. I mean damn, that game had some bangers - El Fuerte, T. Hawk, Hakan.

Perhaps a bit of a tangent, but it's really shocking coastal liberals don't see how racist this actually is.

Wuk being a mary sue is because she is poorly written. A Mary Sue is boring in that there is no depth to their character and they rarely exhibit any inclination to improve as they are written to be perfect characters without flaws in a world tailor made for them. She doesn't start off that way but after her little scene after the first dungeon, she automatically is perfected and the plot deems her character growth and arc to be complete for the remainder of the story. After the first dungeon. The writers than proceed to shove that mary sue down everyone's throats because they wanted to show off how much she's grown and changed. The problem is that barely anything has changed and besides having the barest interest in learning about other people and no longer comparing herself to her siblings, she remains largely the same. Still naive, gullible and easily manipulated and easily provoked. She doesn't earn anything going forward because she still feels like she hasn't properly grown. Wanting to learn about other societies doesn't lighten all her other glaring flaws with the way she's written. Her penchant for standing around and making dimwitted remarks because she's young and stupid and her lack of patience when dealing with more delicate matters and topics just makes her come off as an insufferable twat by the endgame. And after everyone does most of the work, she comes barrelling at the last minute and then after riding our coattails, triumphantly dusts off her hands and stare off into the horizon as if she played some major role in solving things when in actuality she had no idea what was happening or even had a clue at the gravity of the situation besides what she knew on the most surface level.

EDIT: I also want to add that it's absolutely an insult for people to claim that Wuk is supposed to be "furry Karlach". They are not on the same level at all and making that comparison just because they're both big axe wielding chicks is the most retarded and shallow reasoning. You can not compare a stupid little naive girl to a literal tormented woman slowly making her way to death's door all for the sake of having her freedom back for the limited time she has it.

Coastal Liberals and 2nd gen spics were the target audience, the Koana VA made a faggy "WAOW, THEY'RE LITERALLY ME" spiel when the expac came out
Coastal Liberals also rather not prop up bits of mesoamerican history because its piss easy to bring up all the unsavoury aspects of it (which is why i suspect DT lacks any particular political/cultural teeth with Tural when nearly every other faction has skeletons in their closet).
They'd rather adopt all sorts of modern identities such as Chicano, so its probably easy to just sweep DT under the rug while praising the nearest Californian slop like the Casagrandes instead of uplifting the historical Mexican cinema industry or kickstart other latino places' cinema culture

TCD. Total Coastie Death. Can't wait for their whole damn state to slide into the ocean after an earthquake or something.

I am always reminded of the time one of the Tranch Troons (I forget which) who pretends they are totally latino (from Peru iirc) misgendered themselves when trying to speak in Spanish to own the haters; it was the perfect encapsulation of how every single time someone from America claims "I'm LatinE" it turns out to be a crock of shite.

The only ones in the team who nailed their job were the people in charge of designing the uroqpacha map, everything else in the expansion is a watered down gay caricature.

Least they could do is go full 'point out the flaws' and have the mountains painted with fucking graffiti and a city-thunderdome like another fantasy game that recently released a mesoamerican expansion, at least that one went so hard it made me laugh.

Yeah, I'm just saying that the SBI talk would've come up regardless of Sena Bryer's involvement or non-involvement.

I'd argue that it goes on longer than that and would argue the trial where you play as her is when her 'arc' concludes, and they try (heavy, heavy emphasis here) to convey her growing/learning, but it's handled so poorly it just comes off as shite. Like, it's there in the story, but it's told so poorly, voiced so poorly and shoehorned in (specifically the shit with Speeeeen. Listen to me) it's more or less lost.

Mary Sues are flawless characters, already perfectly formed, with stories revolving around them more or less being a power fantasy. I don't really get that vibe with Wuk Lamat (although Wuk is a horrendous character.)

So, here's some of the voice files just slammed up against each other. You can both visually track how unusual WL's frequencies are, but you can also hear so much more clearly how the different recordings grate on your ears. Listen to it with headphones and you'll see what I mean. When you hear lines from the UK<->US studios, there's this weird pressure as your ears try to adjust - and it's so much worse when you go from either of them over to Wuk.

Perhaps a bit of a tangent, but it's really shocking coastal liberals don't see how racist this actually is.
The simple matter is that to have a set of political beliefs, and to act upon those beliefs, is an active thing that requires effort and engagement. There are plenty of progressives or liberals or what-have-yous that find the portrayal to be cartoonishly reductive if not outright offensive stereotyping, but they're dwarfed by the number of "progressives" and "liberals" who are just using those words as tags in their social media bios.

Think about how "RINOs" is a well-defined thing: the sentiment is people who are not conservative but who claim to be conservative. Same thing, obviously, happens here. If you think it through, it's extremely hard to reconcile "authentic voice actors" with "caucazoid from kentucky with a british surname," but you're making the assumption that people are thinking.
Keep in mind Yoshida only made that statement because he was basically forced to say something.
There's some interesting things here. For example, the first paragraph of that English script mentions specifically Wuk Lamat and the voice acting. But it has a different tone from the German in a weird way. It suggests that they asked him, specifically, about WL and mentioned the VA. However:
~"Wuk Lamat is a central figure from FF14: Dawntrail and has raised tempers in the community. There's a large blowback to this character, nasty criticism of her dubbed voice-actor, but also serious fan-criticism of her story and implementation in general."
It doesn't sound like this is actually being said to Yoshi, particularly given the next sentence:
Wir haben Naoki Yoshida bei der Gamescom 2024 getroffen und ihn gefragt, welches Feedback bei ihm und dem Team ankommt, wie man es filtert und was die Idee hinter dem Design von Wuk Lamat ist, für die der Spieler als eine Art Mentor agiert.
~"We met YoshiP at Gamescom 2024 and asked him what kind of feedback he and his team have received, how one filters through it, and what the idea behind the design of Wuk Lamat is, for whom the player acts as a sort of mentor."
So it's unclear if any of the controversy regarding the VA was actually brought up in-question to him, or if it was just mentioned in the article's header. Though this sentence sticks out:
Den Vorwurf, einzelne Personen würden eine Agenda unterbringen wollen, lässt er nicht gelten:
~"He doesn't accept the accusation that individuals could have wanted to advance an agenda."
Which would suggest that more specific, pointed questions were asked - because why else would he dismiss the idea that individuals were trying to advance something?

It's more likely that the interviewer asked stupid questions, but the possibility does exist that he brought it all up somewhat-unprompted. Unless there's a video of it somewhere I missed.

Just a reminder that SE axed Susan Calloway, the amazing singer behind Answers (the the most iconic song of the entirety of FFXIV), when she was being harassed by the deranged FFXIV twitter mob for the crime of liking tweets saying that children shouldn't be allowed to undergo gender transition, meanwhile Sena Bryer is not only just a terrible voice actor, but openly attacks the FFXIV communitys, calls the community racist for not liking a shitty song, attacks fellow voice actors for being is and voicing tranny characters and calls for them to be fired (while he hypocritically is a biological male voicing a biological female character) is constantly stirring up shit and representing the entire game and company while doing so, actively tanking the entire game's reputation, and Yoshi's response is to publicly come out to bat for him and tell the community to stop being meanies to the tranny who is actively helping destroy his game's reputation.

Any respect I ever had for this man is completely destroyed.

Once again reminding you that Yoshi-P didn't think that RMT tells were an issue until he went to an NA World for a fanfest event and got spammed with them. Gee, thanks for making the trial experience considerably worse for everyone instead of putting all of these mechanics behind a progression wall like everything else already is.

He gets given the mushroom treatment by management despite being the lead developer and probably the only reason why Susan got axed for that is because they thought "Wait, EVERYONE knows this person's involvement in the game, even the trial players."

At this point I don't care about FF14 improving, I just wanna see Bryer losing her role as Wuk Lamat and sadly it won't happen since society has a ton of tolerance for trannies and their antics.

You had respect for him? that was your first mistake, you should never respect corporate drones, you should respect soft-marketing corporate drones less and you should respect SE soft-marketing corporate drones a negative amount.

Far as I'm concerned he needs to reevaluate his position in regards to the game, he's definitely capable at what he does but it's yet another case of someone believing their own hype and their ego starting to burst at the seams, sometimes you need a metaphorical 'ass kicking' to sort your ducks in a row, Dawntrail's reception might be it but I'm not holding out hope for anyone who is part of Square Enix.

And even if he does sort it out I have ZERO expectations that anything will happen with the English localization aside it being further enshittened in various creative ways.

Our duo just got to the HW credits. Really enjoyed this expansion; about 130 hours playtime.

The soundtracks this expansion were top notch, and the Ascian Prime boss fight was pretty great. Had to use Rescue/Rez more than usual because we kept getting retards in party who apparently couldn't grasp Dualstar but we had a lot of fun with that dungeon all told.

The pope fight was a little underwhelming in comparison but I got to watch him and his soyfag knights die like a bitch so I won't complain too much.

Story's been very enjoyable overall in HW and I'm a little sad to be moving on from focus being on Ishgard and the dragons. Also the credits vocal track was a banger and totally on par with Answers in my opinion.

We're both hoping Stormblood will be at least as good as HW was story wise. Looking forward to it.

Oh you're not done with heavensward if you just killed the pope, I reckon you still have the best part of it to go.

It's not BAD, it just has a lot of pacing issues and proto-wuk lamat in it.

The good things in it are fairly good tho, it's no Heavensward but I honestly think you'll enjoy it regardless. The real showstopper comes after it.

Oh! We got a credit sequence so I assumed we were in the post-HW/pre-Stormblood bits now! I certainly don't mind getting more time with Ishgard, it's a pretty fun setting.

Up till Shadowbringer, you can now expect a post-MSQ cadence where they continue the xpac story (release version being .0) and wrap up loose ends up till patch .3 (you can keep track of the end of a patch quest by an achievement, and how the quest giver will tell you to "wait for news" or something similar.) The next two major patch quests, .4 and .5 will then start building up to the next event.

Endwalker bucked this trend by instead doing an entirely unrelated (to EW MSQ) mini-arc through the post-release patch quests, but it's markedly inferior in quality and one would say, a harbinger of how shit DT will be.
