Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

Some research director who worked under Calyx in the past has some weird, obsessive gay crush on him, would murder anyone who didn't agree with Calyx and kept a locker full of his pictures in some creepy shrine in his office.
Calyx seemed like he's around the age of the twins and Ryne (17 or 18, if you're generous) so this comes off as borderline pedophilic at best.

They add a random gay character who's a pedo creep and part of the group doing the most objectively evil shit in the expansion to their expansion about diversity with LGBBQ voice actors :story:

What the fuck did Square Enix mean by this?

I don't know, I'd have to be very impressed by the deep dungeon to resub. How are the alliance raid and EX trial if any of you guys have done that?

I believe that Calyx is a bit older and the thing with the locker is just meant to be a throwaway gag that is probably even funnier if you're native Japanese and get all their in jokes. It is funny that the character in question who is obsessed with him has what's been described as the 'hentai protagonist' haircut, though.

One thing that I am both wishing to remain completely and utterly ignorant on and find amusing is that XIV's usual creepshow brigade hasn't made a big fucking deal about the how Sphene and Wuk Lamat are lesbians because they're two female characters who have a platonic relationship. I don't want to know that there is actually crap like that out there, so I will remain blissfully ignorant.

Yet they're utterly fixated on Ryne/Gaia, who are both underage. What could FFXIV's creepy ass community mean by this?

The Alliance Raid is really really fun. EX trial is also pretty fun from what I've seen thus far, too.

Yeah I thought he was another teenager character because he sounded like Alphinaud to me, but he's probably the same age as Wuk Lamat and Sphene who are both described as "older than Alisaie"

Ah yes. The true "what did SE mean by this" is the story of Ryne/Gaia/Mitron. Mitron is heavily implied to be Lohgrif's lover or at least romantic feelings for her, and is a woman (confirmed in one of the Lodestone stories) who, as an Ascian is using a man's body come ShB times. Mitron is fixated on underage Gaia because she can be made into Lohgrif again. And Ryne and Gaia got Squall/Rinoa scenes from FF8 but with them instead and that's where the shipping came from.

Good to hear about the raid and trial though. I might check it out when they've released everything for the .3X cycle.

Yoko Shimomura is a far better composer and I would much rather hear her music than Soken. (Yet she doesn’t get as much attention as him)
Yeah, I'll agree there. I never played 15 past the first 2 hours, but the parts of her music I heard otherwise were really good.
I mostly call him shit because a lot of the music a lot people think of as Memorable and ride Sokens dick on, like Worms Tail, The Final Day, Heavensward, etc were almost all kept in line by Yoshitaka Suzuki, and it shows since he handles that type of music much better due to his work on MGS and Ace Combat. The hardest part of Soken to me, is I can't actually identify his work on it's own, but I pick up more on the arrangers style than his own, in his own compositions.

(I am also ass-chafed to this day people think he did Answers, when that was Nobuo)

He was 11 years old when he was first chosen to join the project to unfuck the 9th's issues. Then he willingly Endless-ified himself to continue his autistic fixation project on keeping people from dying. Discount Asahi was around for a very long time but never aged up because he's literally just a data file that projected himself onto robotics to be "present" even during Preservation work.

Probably didn't bother updating his look because he didn't give a shit and SE is just fine having him be shotacon bait.

  • Thunk-Provoking
Reactions: Xerxes IX
Also I just listened to the trial music and wtf that's really how they chose to arrange the song from IX? It sounds so flat and lifeless. Even the Dawntrail motif sounds halfhearted. Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers all had much better "final boss" songs for their .3 trials. Even Zeromus chose to be conservative with doing the same style of epic orchestral mix and saved that for Phase 2, when the boss is nearly dead in its desperation phase. I'm generally a fan of Soken's work even, but this is bad.

  • I'm tolerating Wuk a lot more now since she's not insufferably shoved down my throat every instant. Helps that I play with japanese dub so she sounds a lot less insufferable too.
  • Sphene is probably without a doubt the MVP of the last few patches. I like her much more than her counterparts. Probably because unlike the other versions of her, there is a human element to her which makes sense because she is a living human being and humans are flawed and weak by nature.
  • Calyx being able to summon and control a primal without he himself becoming tempered has pretty gnarly implications. He doesn't have a soul to brand so he theoretically is immune to tempering because he is not a living being. That means that AI programs can summon a primal and temper people. Up until this point only those with the echo were immune to tempering. That's not the case any more.
  • I know people are upset about ascians coming back, but I'm rather open to the idea of an offshoot organization of rogue ascians. Like Fandaniel, with the unsundered all dead, they're all basically free to pursue their own agendas. Remember that only the unsundered ascians were tempered and that all other existing ascians are regular folk whom have inhereted memories of the ancients. They worked towards rejoinings because they were led by the unsundered, but now they aren't shackled to that duty anymore and I'm willing to bet there are more than a few ascians out there who still retain who they are even after inhereting their memories and powers with all of them having their own stories. Fandaniel was only the beginning.
  • Seems SE is getting a little better with cinematography and lighting.
  • While them killing off people more regularly is a nice change, it gets less nice when you realize they keep killing off characters no one gives a shit about. I did not care for Geode and knew next to nothing about the guy. So watching him die did not stir anything in me. Gone are the days of losing characters who were actually close to us.
  • The little section with the puzzles was nice. They were pretty basic and not hard to solve, but I appreciate the effort they made with at least getting me to use my noggin for a change instead of sitting around reading paragraphs of dialogue the whole time. The only problem is that some people may find themselves annoyed at the sudden halt of pacing for a bunch of boring "puzzles" that are just designed to waste time. Some will appreciate it and some won't.
  • I like that they turned the lights back on in living memory and got rid of the piss sky. The zone looks absolutely gorgeous, especially at night with a clear sky. I can appreciate the symbolism in the act as well.
  • I'm disappointed in Sphene's debut as a combatant. I really wanted her to be a summoner as a nod to the FF9 character she's based on and really wanted to her to have her moment to shine in battle. Unfortunately her display in battle is rather pitiful and her "moment" was her supplanting someone else's moment.
  • I'm annoyed that despite retaking her position as Queen, she does not put on her tiara. Although maybe they could be saving that for a coronation ceremony or some such.
  • The wee bit of extra effort for the different animations when you destroy the terminal depending on what job you are is nice but I wish they had done one for each job spcifically. If you're a melee job or dancer, you just rush in and attack, the animation being the same with it only changing slighty for the weapon you have on (monks punch the terminal while a reaper would just slash at it with their scythe but that same animation is used if you were a paladin, viper etc). Bards draw their bow back and fire, machinists just aim and fire, but the blast is the same across all jobs that are ranged with the animation for casters only being their standard casting animation. A nice change up, I just with they did more.
  • I'm irked that Calyx survived. I want nothing more than to punch the smug brat in his face. He's not even a good villian so it's baffiling that they would keep him around. I'm dreading having to endure his boring monologues again in the future.
  • I hope with the confirmation of what Endless actually are that it'll finally put to rest the stupid fucking debate about whether or not they're "alive".
  • Trial was really nice but I actually never beat FF9 and have no real attachment to the game so my reaction to Necron was very meh. Also I think he looks stupid. The wings look pretty meh too. I'm not crazy about em.
  • Dungeon design was also meh. Was mostly just long hallways with pretty boring backdrops. The bosses were nice though. Except the final boss, that was a snoozefest.
  • I liked the addition of more somber music original to Dawntrail. I felt like they were missing a theme to encapsulate grim situations. Especially during the part with the broadcast talking about death. It was very poignant there.
  • This last one is a bit of a powerlevel, but the theme about death and it being an inescapable aspect of our lives that we have to accept as natural part of our existence and having the strength to face it when it does come resonated on a personal level with me. My father died just after Dawntrail's release and I'd be lying if I said some of the messages and themes in these latest patches haven't helped me cope with his loss. He's gone now and I will never see his face again or hear his voice except in memory now and as long as I remember him as he was in life, he is eternal.
