I kinda live in an area devoid of FLGS. There is only one store in my area, and that one is pretty cancer soy tier. Literal geek girl creed poster on the wall, if you want some idea of scale. As such the clientele reflects this mindset.

So I am trying to find local groups of people to play shit with. Issue is I have no idea where to even start, as I used to always find groups via school clubs or game shops. Anyone know of any websites, apps, or just general tips to finding groups in your local areas?

Only thing I have heard was to check out meetup.com but that site has shown me nothing for my local area.

This is a pretty big problem where I live too. The nearest nerd store is an hour away, and the one time I did go scope it out on a game night the whole place stank of BO mixed with the pizza that was being passed around. Not kidding, I know it's a stereotype, but the place honestly smelled so bad I couldn't take it.

I've been to pretty soyful game stores, too. There's an otherwise nice one in Austin that I used to frequent that contained shrines to both Wil Wheaton and George Takei. That would be fine, but why focus on those two specifically?

Mine shut down, but it was really only a card game store. Really only played Magic, which I hate. I tried to ease into a board game night, but they only took to card-based games. Which I also hate.

Nearest place for me to play war games and such is over an hour away and I’m not fucking with hauling an army and terrain that far, especially since I like to drink and I don’t want to fool with all that.

Friendly Local Game Store
It gets more confusing if you're a gamer and a gunner, because the same acronym is used for Friendly Local Gun Shop.

It would be helpful if I could buy my dice the same place I buy bricks of .22, but no such luck.

Because Shatner wouldn't acknowledge the store even if you paid him. Shit...Kate Mulgrew probably wouldn't, for that matter.

I'd imagine that their politics factor into that quite abit. The progress "omg, I'm so nerdy" crowd like these guys.

Meanwhile Shatner just does whatever he wants, even referencing 4chan.

I never thought I see the day that someone has a Wil Wheaton shrine I wonder what is in there. But anyways I know 2 Local game stores near me both are alright and one of them has a small arcade section I thought was great. One way I find groups or people is usually I just ask one of them for match of something and just start a conversation.

The problem is that Magic, Pokemon, and YuGiOh are what pay the bills. They generate enough revenue to keep the store's doors open. RPGs, board games, and even wargames aren't nearly as profit-generating for the retailer.

I'm lucky in that theres one just 5 minutes drive from me, and its pretty decent sized. theres a bunch of tables used for TCG's yeah, but hes also got 2 or three reserved for D&D and a section of the back set aside just for 40k and other tabletop mini games. and the stockroom in the front is pretty big too.

Obviously it wasn’t generating enough revenue to keep that place open. The nice store, which doesn’t do much card game business, is thriving but that’s a bigger place and they sell comics and other stuff out of there.

Yeah, at the stinky store I mentioned earlier, the owner has stated that he wants to get out of Magic entirely and focus purely on miniatures. But there's always some guy in there spending money on MTG singles, and I can understand not wanting to say goodbye to that revenue.

In my experience magic tends to attract drama, cancer, and smelly neckbeards like flies to shit. I can see why some store owners would wanna just avoid that direct hassle. At the same time it does make more money then anything else out there.
