Damn. I know that's only really a drop in the bucket compared to 14 million, but still, losing 80,000 subs in such a short amount of time does not bode well. And even if you don't consider the blowback in terms of numbers, it's clear their reputation has taken quite a hit. Numerous beloved and influential YouTubers have made videos calling the Fine Bros out. They're not escaping this unscathed.

People have been reacting to events around them for as long as humanity has been around. The FineBros could technically be sued by the caveman that reacted to discovering fire since they're infringing on his "original trademark".

How can they be so selfish? Why do they want to keep all the 'react' stuff to themselves? Isn't the best part of creating something being able to watch it spread and grow?
Look at any really successful franchise. They allow spin-offs and parodies to exist, because they spread the brand name, bring in more creative ideas, and allow fans to express their love for the show. By claiming all 'react' videos, you are cutting off a huge creative outlet for a lot of people. The 'react' franchise will stagnate.

(I know, 'reacting' isn't very creative when you compare it to stuff like fan-characters, but it is still a thing that people create to emulate something they admire. To DMCA something a fan made to honor you is wrong.)

That's the troublesome part, YouTube's DMCA policy's always been shit, or more accurately beyond shit. I don't think that even this will change anything, I think it'll only make it worse.

So either YouTube's got to get people who know their shit to rework it and fast; get new management; or just drop the policy until they get their shit together, take a good long look at themselves and say "what the fuck have we done?" And I can't see either happening, seeing as they're a multi-billion dollar website and all.

Ruining YouTube has always been at the top of Google's priority list, so I agree that they'll only make their policies worse. Problem is, YouTube has a de facto monopoly on video hosting. Everyone goes to YouTube because that's where all the viewers and producers are. Unless a bunch of video producers engaged in a mass exodus to a better website, there's no way YouTube is going to lose their monopoly.

Probably the only Youtuber I follow regularly is CGPGrey. He's really low key and produces a small amount of high-quality videos. He's already put out two in the last two days mocking this whole thing which is a record for him - just goes to show how hilarious this whole thing is.

If I'm correct, the major problem with Youtube's whole copyright thing is that if someone submits one the video is just taken down, just automatically, instead of giving the channel a chance to defend itself. That way, say a movie critic posts a negative review of a movie which totally counts as Fair Use, they can still take it down anyways.
