How cool are these little guys?

Is it cruel to keep them in jar? I've heard of people doing it.

They die in the jars, even with food. But it's an open question if anything done to insects can be considered "cruel" since their brains are so elementary. And it's not my words, I've read a couple of serious articles about it over time. Scientists not even sure if the concept of "pain" can be applied to insects, they are that simple-minded.
Personally I woud've kept them there for an hour or so and let go once I lost interest.
But I live in the region which has no fireflies at all.

We called them lightning bugs. The first night of summer that they came out was such an amazing experience, just running around the yard during that blue dusk catching them in between our hands being as gentle as possible. It's one of those things that where truly magical as a kid but the more you grow up the more mundane they become, still even if they just some bug everytime I see one it brings be me back to those good childhood times.

They're one of my favorite things about mid summer. I go with my friends on short hikes in some of our state parks and nature preserves after work. We make note of when they start appearing and when we see the last one of the year. It's sad when they're gone, partly because they make the night look so much cooler, and because that means in just a couple weeks it starts getting noticeably dark.
