first time playing skyrim, need some advice

Ive had this game for fucking years in my backlog and still need to play it. Ive heard its best playing whatever the edition currently on steam is and without mods first, someone correct me if I'm wrong though

play the game modded
this mod guide will set you up with mods that do not completely mutilate the feel of the game but smooth over a lot of the issues found in bethesda games
i would recommend skipping the gameplay and content sections as they mess with some of the base game balancing, you can decide for yourself once you have a good feel for it whether or not you want them
you should expect to spend a good 10 hours modding this game up if you want to enjoy the fruits of basic modding
if you're a tranny and/or gooner you can spend like 60 hours installing jiggle physics and fagging up the graphics
god sneed

what you should do is

complete the main story line, this will result in one of the factions taking over skyrim and all their guards being stationed in each city, they will fight for you,

then you want to get bitten by a vampire, this will result in all the civilians in every town attacking you on sight,

so now what happens is when ever you enter a town all the guards will massacre everyone immediately.

repeat this until everyone in the game is dead

then what you want to do is complete the mages guilt quest.

the last mission has the quest giver as your companion. he will fight for you.

the end of the quest has you running through a city that has children in it,

these children cannot die or attack you but the game still considers them aggressive.

your companion and the city guards will chase this kid into a house and will attack this child forever because he cannot die and will not deagro.

you have now soft locked the quest lol

At minimum, other than USSEP and SkyUI as previously mentioned, I'd also recommend you get Total Character Makeover (it's labelled as an adult mod as it has (optional) nude body textures) to make you and the npcs look less fugly but still look mostly vanilla.

Some game tips: stealth builds are extremely overpowered, to the point where some people have to make a conscious effort not to become stealth archers because it's piss easy to take potshots at an enemy and sneak away until they stop caring. Meanwhile there's no way to increase magic damage aside from a handful of perks so mages become pathetic in the late game.

what you should do is
Another idea. You can get the quest A Taste of Death in Markarth, where some cannibal named Eola will ask you to clear out a dungeon.

Go through the dungeon without her help. Once you get to the boss room there will be three draugr, but you only need to kill the one on the throne to clear it, leave the other two alive.

Tell Eola that you totally cleared the dungeon for her.

lol just kidding, enjoy the zombies

NOW BRO YOU SHOULD NOT WASTE YOUR LIFE ON THIS SHIT GAME YOU HAVE ONLY SO MUCH TIME LEFT TO PLAY GAMES, PLAY SOMETHING GOOD.

But if you have to play this shitty doodoo sewer infested dog shit of a game then my philosophy is that you should experience vanilla first. Play it that way for an hour or so to get an idea of what it's like, then add in the big floppy titty and mecha mods.

what is your favorite skyrim memory
Getting the game on release night, picking a fight with a giant, losing, and getting my ass kicked into orbit. The bug was so funny they left it in.

Also if you're going to mod, do yourself a favor and get Mod Organizer 2. Don't use nexus's Vortex troonware, its a steaming pile of shit.

If i had to pick an essential mod that isnt mentioned here, it would have to be VioLens (or whatever implementation of the idea has superseded it, I havent played in like 5 years) which lets you tweak how the killcam/kill animations trigger. I max it out so the game feels more like youre wielding a dangerous weapon instead of whacking enemies with a nerf bat until they spontaneously keel over dead.

Also this gem, which works with both oldrim and SE: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/2973?tab=posts

so these are my questions
  • should I play Skyrim as is (the way God intended)
  • should I install the QoL mods then play Skyrim
  • if so, what mods do you recommend
Throwing my two cents in by saying just get the Unofficial Patch and get SkyUI.

If it's your first go with mainline TES games as a whole, rather than getting into modding Skyrim I'd recommend going through Oblivion and Morrowind afterwards if you're just keen on more elder scrolls: it'll keep the experience fresh and give you more ""gameplay"" as you go backwards.

Honorable mention to my first ever play session, first thing I did was murder a chicken in the tutorial village and immediately have everyone try to kick my shit in.

My favorite memories are mods, unfortunately. I play Skyrim like it's The Long Dark or Outward using some survival mods like Frostfall and CACO, and a khajiit follower named Inigo who's very talkative and can be endearing if you don't find him annoying. Many many days spent just hiking across Skyrim trying not to freeze to death early game and listening to the blue cat man talk to Meeko the dog (a vanilla companion)

If OP wants, I can post my modlist for Skyrim 1.5.97 (or whatever that specific version of SE is) for the Skyrim But It's The Long Dark. Its like 30-something items, iirc, but to chop it down to just "vanilla but with wilderness survival" would probably be like 5 or 6 mods

One tiny mod I recommend is the wearable lantern one where you can craft a lamp using leather strips and a junk lantern.
You can even have it set to where you need to give it oil. Its MUCH better than the magelight spell.
Also use SkyUI. Skyrim's old UI sucks so hard.

  • what is your favorite skyrim memory I have a poor memory so I forget but there were tons of adventures I had in that game. Probably my Snow Elf RP playthrough or Dwemer RP playthrough with the mods.

First playthrough, just an hour or so in. That bandit tower north of riverwood on the way to riften. Theres some female bandit and I headshotted her from pretty far away and she ragdolled in a very comical way.
