He says people in his home town don't like his family because they own a farm and are pretty well off while the rest is relatively poor. He doesn't necessarily want the money. This is something the friendless do to compartmentalize why they don’t have friends. My bet is that the, “I don’t have friends because I cut them off.” Is the fake story.
