I think a more accurate comparison is someone coming for a CT scan but the doctor didn't give clear instructions on what to image. Safer to ask for clarification than to just wing it and potentially fuck up. In this case it's clearly not that important but regardless of the scientific validity of polygraph testing, they have rules they have to follow.
