Exhaling is proven to make you hit harder i believe, the more tension you have in your body the less effective you can throw your arms.

It's an energy conservation technique. You see it in tennis too, ever wonder why tennis players often scream or yell whenever they hit the ball? If you exhale on a hit it helps conserve energy (the screaming is a holdover from training where they're taught to make a loud noise when they exhale so the coach on the sidelines knows they're doing the technique properly).
