Its actually something that's happened before, what with jissoseiki, yukuri, the Oncler fandom, etc, having all been things. Fluffies are just the most current incarnation of this.

I think what it is is that there's just a certain type of person that for whatever reason feels compelled to make this shit. If anything, the fact that this shit keeps happening to various fandoms only makes it more bizarre and unsettling.

It's the same group of people that like to give cartoons they grew up with "dark and edgy" interpretations and then claim that's how the creators intended them to be. I'm almost impressed that there's a bit of self-awareness there.

I can't remember who it was, or where, but some wise kiwi once explained this sort of thing in a really great way. Basically the reason things like that get made, and the reason 'cows will keep popping in to defend their fetishes and whatever, is that each of them truly believes they're different from the rest. Special. They're going to be the one that finally "pulls the sword from the stone" and normalizes their deviance and makes it mainstream.

This strikes me as just more of that mindset.
