I am developing a 4U page because why not. The goal is to expose people to threads they might want to see.
Dev preview of a first draft.
I'm adding in recent features to the page. I kind of want the media scroll to include, either next to it or in replacement of it, media that's actually popular instead of just recent uploads.
Sometimes I miss notifications for thread updates and forget to read them for a while. It would be nice to have a tab suggesting recently active watched threads that the user hasn't checked in on recently.
I know this is meant to be tailored to users' interests but I'd like to see a "wildcard/random" option that'll pull up any post/thread no matter its age, I've had fun just pulling up ancient threads and reading through them. It's also how I got into writing OPs (I read through a 2019 thread and thought "I could do this better"), so this could probably be a way people get into (re)writing OPs.
I don't know about this, how would threads be chosen to be served up to the user? It'd require some sort of algorithm that studies threads that the user usually posts on to gauge their interests and store that data on the user's posting and reading habits, no? If that's the case, the potential "attack surface" for a subpoena against the user would get bigger.
Very subjective of me, but I also think it's against the very spirit of a forum. A year or two ago we had that big spat over people browsing the forum exclusively through sticker notifications and yet now we're giving people the option to browse the forum using an algorithm.
Is the point to have it all algorithmically generated? If not, I'd like that "Jump back in" section (or a separate one) to be self-curated, like the Watch list.
There's a lot of fast-moving threads I don't want to Watch and get notifications every minute for; but I'll check in once a week or month. Right now I just click one when it surfaces the front page, or will Search them manually when I'm bored. Basically having a Bookmarks list for threads themselves, and either surface a random one (like Jump Back In appears to do) or show the 3 most recently updated threads.
Also the page should randomly call you a retard, for no reason.
Terrible idea. Algorithmic content is for mongoloids. I know you want to grow the site but this is the equivalent of sticking a video of an infinite runner in the corner to attract the two-digits here.
It's also a massive privacy pet peeve of mine. Amazon and eBay do this and I hate it, just sell me shit, don't follow me around the store. For a site that prides itself on pseudo-anonymity this is backwards to have to collect, retain and collate more data. (Yes I know all access is logged at least in server logs.)
