“Celebrity” is a bit of a strong word here, but there’s Tami Erin. She played Pippi Longstocking in a movie back in the 80’s and hasn’t done anything relevant ever since. The movie wasn’t even successful; it failed to make back its budget, and critical reception was so-so. That hasn’t stopped Tami Erin from spending the next 30 years trying to make a career out of “I played Pippi Longstocking in a movie once.” The most noteworthy thing she’s done outside of that is have a sex tape drop. She doesn’t seem to be particularly antagonistic online, but I think she still fits because of how sad her web presence is. It’s one thing for an actor to heavily identify with a successful role they had as a child, but like I said, this wasn’t even a success.

Holy shit, I vaguely remember that movie and had a huge crush on the actress.
I'm surprised Pipi hasn't been turned into a "queer icon" like Harriet the Spy.

Yeah she’s a qt 3.14. Like I said, she doesn’t seem to be particularly antagonistic or exceptional, so I hold her in higher regard than many others mentioned here. I just brought her up because she bases a large part of her online identity on a not-so-successful role she had over three decades ago. Like, her current Twitter handle is “TamiErinPippi.” She desperately needs more work.

Yeah I'm frankly surprised that pipi hasn't had a fag reboot too. They're too busy making new gay superheros, like captain AIDs

She had a pretty good career going, starting with Animal House and ending with being the teen female lead and love interest in Caddyshack. In two years she was done, four movies total between 1978 and 1980. She developed schizophrenia and a drug addiction, she just couldn't work anymore so she disappeared into crazy-land.

It's a shame that they shut down the discussion over at IMDB, her page was interesting with possible sightings over the years, she was apparently homeless for a while according to some. Someone claimed to be the wife or ex-wife of her brother(something like that) and she gave some details about how she moved in with them for a while in the early 2000's and was pretty stable at that time. There are lots of rumors and speculation floating around, one is that she had trouble breaking away from the character she was playing(because of the mental illness). I don't know about that one though.

The latest update I can find is that she's a recluse living under a different name in Connecticut. This is all rumors though and I didn't include the really crazy shit, discussion about her attracts other schizos so there's some outlandish claims out there.

That's too bad.
She was a cutie.
Judy Garland apparently stayed in some kind of mental clinic not too far from where I grew up.

Her being cute was how I fell into this rabbit hole, I was watching Caddyshack and wondered what happened to her so I checked IMDB. That was years ago and I still do a cursory search once a year to see if there's any news.

And I wonder what kind of gnarly shit Garland took to the grave. When she was 13, before she ever appeared on screen, she was signed by the studio to entertain employees at parties. That doesn't sound ominous at all in a Hollywood context!

And after all that's come to light in recent years about Hollywood (shit that should have seemed obvious to most), people STILL act surprised that former child stars end up all fucked up.

And then they try to make US feel responsible for it, like that recent Britney Spears "documentary" that has come out.
My wife watched it and kept talking about how bad she felt for her and it's all the paparazzi's fault (and the public by association), and I had to give her a little reminder that she was probably raped by every manager she's ever had since she was a little girl.

Remember Britney's sister Jamie Lynn Spears? How everyone called her a slut or a whore and everyone said her show got cancelled because she got knocked-up by her boyfriend? Now the rumor mill is that she got knocked up by the producer of Zoey 101, Dan Schneider, and her career and reputation were destroyed because some fat creep with a foot fetish forced her onto the casting couch. You could probably write an academic paper about child stars and their lives as adults and how they fall apart based on which Hollywood circles they run with. The people Britney Spears and the Coreys ran with are clearly different than the people Kurt Russel and the Pheonix brothers ran with.

More an opinion piece than anything else, but still disturbing nonetheless.
I am so tired of every female character that isn't traditionally feminine being declared gay and/or trans. It's been a major uphill battle for-fucking-ever to be able to say that not being traditionally feminine is okay and doesn't make you any less of a girl/woman. And then these fucks come along and actively try to undo all that because they want to be special.

To be fair, the author of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo said once that Lisbeth Salander was meant to be like a goth Pipi Longstocking, so...

Do directors who stopped making movies count?

There's Martin Brest of Beverly Hills Cop and Scent of a Woman fame who threw his hands up and stopped directing after the mega bomb that was Gigli.

Then there's Stephen Norrington of Blade fame who quit after The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

There's also Kinka Usher who hilariously only has one feature length film credit to his name, but he directed the Taco Bell chihuahua commercials, then directed the movie Mystery Men, it bombed and he didn't make another movie since.

Those are guys who quit completely, but far, FAR more common is directors who direct a bomb and then are regulated to just directing TV episodes for the rest of their career, which you wouldn't BELIEVE how high the number for that is, even for guys who have directed some really well known movies.

A few examples of that is Stephen Hopkins of Predator 2 fame, he's mostly done TV in recent years, although he did last have a feature film in 2016, so not bad.

But then there's Jeremiah S. Chechik of Christmas Vacation fame, then he directed The Avengers (oh no, not Marvel, the 1998 movie based on the 1960s TV series) and then has done nothing but TV since.

A surprising example of this is filmmaker John Badham, who's directed some really well known movies like Saturday Night Fever, WarGames and Short Circuit, but has only done TV since the 1990s, this could just be a case of him getting old and purposely choosing to work in TV though (he was born in 1939)

Work is work but to me TV directing is almost completely anonymous work, so you're definitely not a "celebrity" doing it in my opinion with extremely rare exceptions like David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos and Joss Whedon, but Joss seems like he's going to be an ex-celebrity soon due to #MeToo.
