"This car is so bad."

He talked a fair bit after the qualifying race, quotes are taken from this Lewis stan account:
“It is what it is. I think this is the car for the year, we just need to tough it out and build a better car for next year.”

“[The car is] Stiff. Over here you need to be able to use the kerbs so it’s very very tricky. It’s not the Montreal that I know, that I’m used to and that I’ve experienced in my career. It’s the worse that I’ve ever felt any car here. I’m hoping overnight we can try and make some changes but, fundamentally it’s just the fundamentals of the car. It is what it is. It’s going to be a struggle.”

“It’s just a monumental fight to keep it out the wall. When the car leaves ground a lot, when it lands it grips up & it goes into different directions. So you’re just trying to catch a car that hops, grips, hops, grips. It’s tough.”

“We’ve tried loads and loads of things, so we’ve ticked them all off[experiments for set up], those ones don’t work so we have to go and find something else. We’re way off but, it’s to be expected with this car.”

“We’ve already raised the car as high as we can go, we’ve been running at the top of the suspension all year and only since Barcelona have we started to be able to creep it down a little bit.”

“It’s never been pushing the limit to a safety issue. To the [point] that when you’re in the car you’re feeling pain. There’s never been a thought in any engineer’s mind ‘how far can we push it before the driver’s in pain’ whereas this year that is a question the engineers have to think. How far can we push it? That’s where the performance is. And us drivers are like yea, we’ll just go through this pain just to get the points for the team.”

“Pretty much like every Friday for us trying lots of different things. An experimental floor on my side, which didn't work. Nothing we are doing to this car seems to work. We have been trying different set ups. Me and George were running much different set ups in FP2 just to see if one works & one doesn't. I will wait to hear but for me it was a disaster. It's like the car is getting worse. Getting more and more unhappy with the more we do to it.”
That is a pretty grim picture being painted there.

Also I wonder if Ferrari may punt it if RBR looks too good and just take the grid penalties this week
They may as well since Leclerc has had to stick in his 3rd ECU which means a 10 place penalty.

Them eating engine electronics this quickly is also not great. They're a standandard single supplier part too (made by McLaren) so can't just be Ferrari design being shit.

In other news some drivers were complaining about rear tyre wear which is odd since Canada is usually front limited. Ocon found out first hand in P1 that Canada is a brake killer too.

The ocon brake fire was because a piece of paper that was littered on the track got stuck on the intake of that brake (which fortunately is a rare occurrence in F1 nowadays). There seems to be a lot of litter around the track at Montreal, that gets kicked up when the cars drive by.

I am a prophet.

The FP2 highlights said a new Turbo. Is he going to start from the back? Or are they just simplifying thelanguage for the videos.

The new turbo is 10 place penalty but the rumors that the commentators said is LEC will replace other engine components so will start from the back.

See that big thunderstorm coming in at the end of FP2? Shade too late to arrive.

Also, anyone else notice not one yellow flag in either session? Just that can on track for brief VSC. That was weird that not one yellow was thrown.

Also Vettel looking quite stout today. He could be in for a top 5 if form continues.

Current forecast for tomorrow:

Those are quite cold temps too.

To my mind, knowing a bit about electronics, it's even more a bad Ferrari design. That means they're overdriving the shit out of something, or causing feedback into the ECU that's way out of proportion to what everyone else is doing.

I can't remember every seeing just that getting replaced by itself. Usually it gets taken when they go to the back for a whole new engine.

I don't think I've ever seen a top-tier team principal actually answer questions the way Horner does in F1. It still feels weird to hear him actually tackle hard questions head on or just flat out state "I can't talk about that" rather than blow smoke.

Nobody but Brundle on the Sky team has watched Bill and Ted 1. This explains so fucking much.

Perez on 11, the hell went wrong with the Mexican Minister of Defense? Vettel on 4 though, pretty neat. If he pulls that tractor on the podium this season, I'll give him massive props.

The Merc, on the other hand, looks like it's suffering a lot. Even with the setup trying to limit porpoising, they still bounce rather violently. If they don't get that shit under control, they might be the first that get ordered to crank up their rear end. Kinda funny that Russel says FIA's new directive doesn't solve the problem. Dude, what do you expect? FIA to show up in your garage, give you the magic "no bounce" setup and leave? FIA isn't there to solve your porpoising issues, it's there to make sure you team's failure to build a car doesn't get you killed. If this ruins your car's competetiveness, that's none of their concerns.

Also, that sky was pitch black at the end of FP2... could be quite neat, if there's a small downpour during the race. A wet race is always neat, but the best races, imho, are when the track is dry at the start and you get a sudden downpour. Really makes strategists shine and you get a lot of awesome overtaking.

Back in Verstappen's first season in the RB, he was a massive shithead, but boy was he a fucking masterclass of his own in wet races. Hated to admit it back then, cause I really disliked him, but the guy can drive.

The mercedes this year is a complete shitbox, far beyond our understanding of it. Today lewis' message that it was undrivable was quite accurate, as the rear was completely gone. He seemed more defeated in interviews after practice. This has probably been a shock to the whole team after they had more promising results in Spain. Now that they really have to stop the bouncing they have lost all performance.

Petitioning for FIA to step in paid off big time, I'd say. They undoubtedly hoped for some directive that would allow them some way to weasel themselves out of their dead end design, FIA instead mandated them to do exactly what they could have done from the get-go, that exposes all the faults in their car.

Watching Mercedes get what's coming to them is really just excellent.

All those 'Merc are back' posts from stans a few weeks back are looking mighty good right now.

Merc need to accept defeat. Set it up in a way that doesn't kill their drivers, take whatever performance hit that results in, and take the extra dev time they'll get from the lower finish to channel all their energy into next year. It's abundantly clear that even in the best case scenario the car can't compete with Ferrari and RB. Just salvage what you can and get out of there.
