Anyone else think Antonelli is getting unfair scrutiny for a rookie? Mercedes really screwed him with the Verstappen comparisons
his results are underwhelming with a decent car compared to russell who isnt even that good. other rookies this season like hadjar and borto have been achieving standout results putting their cars in places where you really wouldnt expect it, meanwhile antonelli routinely bins it or makes embarrassing mistakes

Him being a competent Italian driver on lower levels is the main thing driving scrutiny and not verstappen comparison…

If anything Mercedes has been running a lot of cover for him from the Italian media that will be build you up and tear you down within a day…

Verstappen, bored of F1, is debuting in GT racing today at the Nurburgring. He's driving a GT4 Cup car to qualify for the license required to race a GT3 at the Nurburgring. Free English broadcast here (not pirated, official source): https://www.youtube.com/live/jLuNTiYdQVQ
Will be interesting to see how Max fares. Going from open wheel racing to GT racing (or any form of closed wheel racing) isn't as straightforward as it sounds, and few drivers manage to successfully transition from one to the other. Either way, it's great to watch a race with without Crofty's passive-aggressive commentary whenever Max is doing well.

Max has already been racing GT cars in sims for years.

Don’t expect much from today’s race though because he’s in a weird class thanks to the NLS’ bureaucratic licensing rules.

He was testing a GT3 Ferrari under a pseudonym on the Nurburgring earlier this year. And he allegedly broke the lap record during the testing session lol

He's in a GT4 class with a license requirement forcing his car to be detuned.
Verstappen does not yet appear on the provisional entry list but is expected to race for the Lionspeed GP team, taking the wheel of its Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS in the SP7. He could dovetail stints in the #89 Cayman in SP7 class, with another stint aboard the #980 Cayman in Cup 3.

SP7, a GT4 dominated class for 3.5l to 4.0l engines, is the second class below the leading SP9 class for GT3 cars, so in theory Verstappen is competing for class wins rather than overall honours.
But this weekend chasing lap records or even class wins is out of the question, because Verstappen is lacking the so-called Permit A, without which his car must be artificially restricted.

In standard trim, the Porsche Cayman GT4 produces 425hp at a weight of 1,315kg, giving a power-to-weight ratio of 3.1kg per hp. That is well below the minimum 4.2kg per hp limit that a first-time Nordschleife participant is allowed to handle. As a result the Cayman has to be detuned, whether the driver in question is a four-time world champion or not.

In the so-called “Permit B spec” the car produces just over 300hp at 1,350kg. That leaves Verstappen without a realistic shot at winning his class, let alone targeting lap records.
The reason for the restriction is the DMSB Permit Nordschleife (DPN), often referred to as the “Nordschleife licence”. It comes in two stages, with only the higher-level Permit A allowing drivers to compete in cars with a power-to-weight ratio below 4.2kg/hp.

To obtain the permit, Verstappen must collect two classified race results – which can be achieved within a single race by competing in two different cars, and that's why Verstappen is expected to take turns in both Lionspeed's Caymans. In order for his contribution to qualify, he must complete 14 laps and cover at least 20% of the race distance in each car.

In a typical four-hour race, the Caymans manage 25 to 26 laps, meaning Verstappen could tick off all requirements with two stints of seven laps each.

Yes, I said during the hype he needs another year in F2 before getting that promotion. He was going well in F2 but not up to ready to step up levels. Toto was just scared to death of having the same happen again as did with Max.
And in other "news", the dickheads in charge of F1 aren't opposed to switching to V8s in 2030 if all the manufacturers can come to an agreement of the specs. 880bhp, 16000rpm V8, with shared gearbox parts are the suggested baselines. Sounds good on paper.
V8 but with 2.5 meter wide cars that weight 1.5 ton. Asking for anything good to happen in F1 these days is wishing on the monkey paw.

Those specs are good, but I'd make it so that while they can start with a spec gearbox they would allow development on own designs after 2032 with the only shared thing being standardized mountings and no fixed gearbox ratios so teams can actually sort out what gearing they need from weekend to weekend rather than find some compromise set-up at the start of the year and be locked to that for the rest of it.

As much as I hate the current PU’s, I’d take smaller cars over V8s. So many tracks don’t have areas to overtake anymore cause the cars are so fucking big….
It’s disappointing that no one is realistically thinking of changing that

The size of the cars is mostly due to the lack of refuelling, which means the cars have to carry a race length's worth of fuel plus the safety stuff required to make it the car not explode in a crash. The only way to decrease the car size significantly is to bring back refuelling.

The reason why the cars can't pass isn't due to their size, but rather due to the amount of dirty air they make.

Blame Lewis and Toto for ruining the ground effect regulations because Mercedes failed to design a good car.

Then explain how the 1990 cars (before 1994) were able to race without refueling and at the same time being way smaller and lighter. And that was the era with the heavy weight V12's too (of course there were also V8's and V10's)
