It's insane how far the safety technology has come in the sport. Obviously it'll never be perfect (people thought it was safe post-Senna and then Bianchi happened), but so many deaths in the sport could have been prevented with today's enhancements.

Not done that previously for lap 1 red flags though. Just seems to be one of those odd race control decisions that is dependant on flipping a coin.

The ultimate tragedy is it usually takes one of these events to expose the issue. Earnhardt in NASCAR overwhelmingly changed their mindsets, for example.
